i do wonder why they left out Hachi (the octopus guy from Arlong's crew). maybe his design would be hard to replicate or something...

for instance, it wasn't until the end of Ennies Lobby in the anime that i found out Garp was Luffy's grandpa.

They have the benefit of hindsight. Same thing with Zoro's encounter with the previous number 7. They are able to bring certain details in earlier because they are already been revealed elsewhere.

They are saving him for Season 10

I've never seen a single episode of the anime and I liked the first ep of the live action show. It's fun. The main actor is a little annoying but I'm guessing that's how the character is.

I finished the show today. Enjoyed it quite a bit. It was a good adaptation. Way better than Cowboy Bebop and Death Note.

Just finished the last episode of the season. Pretty damn good imo, I was a little irked by some of the liberties they took at first but grew past it -- still incredibly enjoyable. Don Krieg got done very dirty though.

Assuming season 2 is also eight episodes and follows the same pacing, I can see the episode breakdowns being:

Episode 9 - Loguetown, ending with them scaling Reverse Mountain
Episode 10 - Meeting Crocus, Laboon, Vivi, and Mr. 9; Whisky Peak
Episode 11 - Little Garden
Episode 12 - Drum Island, part 1
Episode 13 - Drum Island, part 2
Episode 14 - Arabasta, part 1
Episode 15 - Arabasta, part 3
Episode 16 - Arabasta, finale

I'm also calling it now that to prevent him from being an expensive and potentially bad-looking CGI monster, Chopper will default to his "human form" a lot more in the show than he does in the manga so they can instead just do prosthetics and costuming.

Just finished the season. It was pretty good, looking forward to a second season. I think they did about as well as they could adapting it to live action. Hopefully they get more budget the second season.

I can't see Alabasta just not being a whole season. Even truncated, so much is going on.

Just finished episode 4. Uhhhh why is Koby everywhere. I like him, don't get me wrong. But they're starting to alter the direction of the story decently heavily with them showing up Syrup Village...

I guess I'll wait and see what they do with it but it's way too early for Koby and Luffy to reunite.

Are the show runners gonna cut out Skypia and Thriller Bark or naw? Season 2 is Baroque Works/Alabasta, season 3 is Enes Lobby?

my memory of the manga/anime this early is super hazy, the garp reveal this early and the whole thing with buggy's head were changes for live action yeah? pretty cool.

Skypiea is way too important to skip. Plus Enel is awesome, and they already teased it in S1 via the Noland story anyway.

No way that's possible unless they randomly slap on an extra 30 episodes or something. I can see S2 ending with the Alabasta finale, S3 going through Skypiea to Enies, and S4 Thriller Bark to post-Marineford.

If Netflix doesn't cancel it. :')

IMO the pre timeskip could be done like:

Season 2 - Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, Drum Island, Alabasta - this feels too much but any less doesnt finish off Baroque Works and pushing that to Season 3 seems insane

Season 3 - Jaya, Skypeia, Long Ring Long Land, Admiral Ao Kiji Feels too little with Skypeia but adding the Ao Kiji beat down would be a great season ended

season 4 - Water 7/Enies Lobby
Season 5 - Thriller Bark, Saboady - again feels too little but finishing on the end of the Straw Hats would be an epic way to end the season.
Season 6 - Amazon Lily, Impel Down, Marineford - would need to keep the other Strawhats in it. I cant see cutting the entire main cast for a season working for tv.

if we dont at least get to Enies Lobby to see that one moment, then Ill be extremely disappointed.

Ending whatever season it would be (probably 5) at the Return to Sabaody would be a better season finale than ending at Marineford imo. Marineford would be too much of a downer ending, whereas Return to Sabaody would have the crew reunite with each other and set off on their new adventure with renewed optimism.

Open the season with Sabaody, then show scenes of the crew doing stuff on their respective islands while Luffy is going through Amazon Lily, Impel Down, and the Marineford War, like they were doing with Koby, Garp, and Helmeppo this season. End the season with the crew's reunion and showing off their post-timeskip costumes.

Not sure I agree. I think Luffy ringing the bell to signal the two year training would be a really awesome season ending.

Oh shit, you're right. That would be the perfect moment.

Watched episode 2. Buggy is one of my favorite characters and I love the actors performance. But it seems like the fights are a little less satisfying or climactic than in the anime from what I remember.

I'm on episode 7 and I feel conflicted about the fishmen. Yeah, Arlong is pretty messed up but as a black American, I kind of feel his anger at their treatment. He's kind of like Killmonger lol tactics are completely messed up/wrong but his anger is justified.

I'm watching it for a second time, it won't get off my mind lol. I feel like rereading the manga as well but I'd like to read some other things first.

that's one thing I really liked about it. In the manga, racism against the fishmen isn't a real plot point until way later and the Arlong arc didn't address it that seriously, Arlong was only talked about later with it. The show introduced that history and that anger earlier and it really elevated the (already good) arc for me.

They come back in the later parts of the story in a big way.

Another surprising thing they did with this adaptation was dropping the Luffy/Gold Roger comparison way earlier compared to the source material.

Im glad they are dropping all these later reveals early and showing how so much about the world is interconnected. The One Piece world has sooo much history and layers to it, one of my biggest issues with the manga is we spend 100 chapters in one single island and then we get like 3 chapters of epic look at all that happened with the Yonko, the 7 warlords, the world government, etc before being stuck on another island for 2 years

The manga has fixed this problem in the later half, Im glad the live action show runners also know they can hook more of the audience by doing more world building early

Yes. They moved up or expanded on/altered some of Garps stuff and Koby's Cover Story.

Koby, Garp and Helmeppo get a lot more screentime.

Yeah, I do too. In the event the show actually lasts for a long time, it doesn't make sense to withhold a twist like Garp's relationship to Luffy for multiple seasons, when most viewers new to OP would end up learning about that before then anyway. It would be hard to avoid something like that.

Do the live action characters do the weird laughs? Gurururu, Zehahaha, Shishishi,Ahahaha, Mamamama,Worororo and,KISHISHISHIS,HORORORORO and so on,

Yeah Arlong has an impact on the story, in comparison to Don Krieg that was just one and done, which was probably a good call on them to kill him off to make Mihawk look good lol.

I also think they made the change because the information is so widely available. If you search Garp youll get Monkey D. Garp as the very first suggestion. To withhold that information for multiple seasons you have to hope no one searchs for Garp for the next 4 seasons.

Hey, when you get to Don Krieg's scene look at the guy on his left on the ground. It's Pearl! this live action is full of details like that, such as Bellamy the hyena's wanted poster

So how do we think they are gonna handle Haki in the show? That is one thing Oda definitely did not have planned out in the first half of the manga. Its a tough balance though, before Haki you have the devil fruits basically being the top power and Logia devil fruits being almost invincible. Then after Haki most devil fruits, especially logia, become very meh lol

Crocodile is the first person who should def be using Haki against Luffy right? Maybe the show has him use armament Haki to hurt Luffy despite his rubber body? Could be tough though to introduce Haki in season 2, but then Luffy doesnt learn how to use it till like season 7

No, Crocodile easily defeated Luffy back then because he was using a bladed weapon and Luffy had no counter against a logia devil fruit, it's also why he was so helpless against Smoker who is also a logia type, back then Logias were broken as fuck at least on paper because the ones worth their salt instinctively became their element so people couldn't hurt them with physical attacks, they were the strongest devil fruit users with Zoan users being second, Zoan devil fruit users aren't encountered until later in the story, Paramecia fruit users like Luffy were the most common type.

I dont think Oda had thought of Haki yet when he wrote the Alabasta arc, but now that we are going back and the show is like a re-write, Crocodile definitely should have Haki back then? He is a warlord and we see him use Haki later

Finished it last night. As someone who's never touched One Piece before, I really enjoyed it. Might even rewatch it, tbh.

The cast all did great, and had great chemistry with each other. Really enjoyed how Luffy's actor portrayed him -- he came off really likeable and wholesome, to the point I wouldn't think twice about joining his crew if given the option. Whenever he was sad about something, I felt sad for him as well, and when he was happy, I was too. I figured a live action version of a character that's so animated would come off really cringey or awkward (like Ed in Bebop), but they found a really good balance with him.

The casting department and costumes department both did amazing jobs, as did whoever built the sets and found locations for everything. Felt like PotC but more colorful, which is the vibe I was hoping for. And even though the main cast dresses so "cartoonishly," they never felt like they looked out of place or like cosplayers pretending to be the characters. Even the weirder looking characters like Merry or Nezumi didn't look that goofy to me due to how they made the world as a whole look.

The found family vibe was done well it was cute seeing them all become closer over the season, especially Luffy and Zoro's friendship. Nami's "help me" scene, and Sanji's stuff with Zeff were all real emotional, and I loved how happy Shanks and everyone were for Luffy to see he finally got a wanted poster. The entire last stretch of episode 8 was just had me smiling non-stop from how pure it all was.

I was really impressed by the fighting as well. Really felt like anime fights at times, especially Zoro's and Sanji's. I thought Gum Gum attacks, and fighting with three swords or just kicks would look weird in live action, but they pulled it off. I loved every time we got to see combat.

Really overall just impressed by this. I'm hoping they get a second season.

Shorter timescale, benefit of hindsight when it comes to pacing, and it clues the live action audience into some things the anime/manga crowd is coming in with prior knowledge of.

I absolutely love the costumes. None of them look out of place, since even almost immediately you get stuff like Koby with his pink hair, so it never feels out of place. They did a fantastic job by not skimping on that.

It's funny how the calling out moves don't really translate well into live action, but because the show called it out early, it kinda works. Then when Sanji does it, it looked really cool.

Finished it today. I really enjoyed it and it's the only One Piece stuff I've ever engaged with. It's a ton of fun. There's some slow bits that could have been better executed but overall I had a great time.

On the negative side I will say that the cinematography is kinda bad. The fight scenes need longer takes. And they need to stop shooting at like T/1.2 on every shot lol you put so much time and money in set design, let the audience see it! There were also a lot of soft shots.

I disagree with this, to an extent. People watching this kind of thing (as casual viewers) aren't necessarily into long/intense fight scenes. Some of the worst performing DC movies are pretty much non-stop fight scenes, for example.

I'm more surprised they actually let the characters call their attacks, the only outer is Zoro, not one Oni Giri, Tiger Trap or even his then best move Santoryu Ougi Saizen Seikai or Three Sword Style Three Thousand Worlds and because they cut out Hachi we didn't get Dragon Twister either, Like he even went through the exact motion Zoro does for Three Thousand Worlds and didn't say it, I mean he obviously couldn't due to the sword in his mouth but I would have at least liked to hear it internally

I actually kinda like this, too, assuming it builds up to eventually Zoro also calling out his attacks. I like how they started with him being like "That's stupid," so I'd like to see a slow build to him finally giving in and doing it.
