I was fortunate to have seen him host the show live on my 18th birthday, and he made the show something special. He lived a long, fulfilling life. And he brought great memories to many people. I think part of this is that modern-day game show hosts don't really have the same "it factor" as the old school guys did. Steve Harvey is the only one I'd say is a slam dunk of the ones hosting today, and that's because of an entirely different "it factor." The guy males the Feud fun to watch. That's what's important. And Bob Barker sure made TPIR fun to watch. Sad they don't let Drew Carey do that anywhere near as much (that's more of a production thing, due to having more ads and not enough time... just rush, rush, rush). --- Help control the pet population. As for production changes, every show is increasingly focused on not giving us the actual product. Nowhere was that more evident than when they tried to reboot American Gladiators. Old show: 6 events plus Eliminator, for 36 mins of show and 24 of ads. Almost all of those 36 were of the events. New show: 4 events including Eliminator, for 30 min of show if we were lucky. At least half of those 30 were spent on not-the-events. Ninja Warrior is the same way, American vs original. Family Feud is a shell of what it once was, where a game would span two single rounds, two doubles, a triple if necessary, and only then go to sudden death. The problem, which stems from fewer sponsored prizes leading to more ad time, means that Drew doesn't get to crack as many jokes as he should. Trust me, I really enjoy the moments of genuine goofiness (a recent one is someone asking for Whose Line content, leading to Drew starting a "Weird Newscasters" game and having George do the weather as "The guy from the B-52s" with hilarious results). There just aren't enough of those. Add four more minutes and the show becomes a lot more fun. The contestants also seem less genuine and are just acting excited. Some of these are really off-putting. The ones that are real are great TV. Faking it is not. What made Bob Barker so special was how he would heckle people without being mean. He wanted these people to win even if he was mocking them for being bad at the game. He was great at getting reactions of of people - genuine ones. And that's faded with time and tragic shifts in TV culture. --- Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered!
