I watched episode 4

I agree that Usopp's acting is the weakest thus far. Also, in a show that features green hair and an axe for a hand, somehow the butler pirate was the most anime looking motherfucker. That hair. Jesus.

Some of the shots in episode 3 and 4 were weird. There's a scene early in episode 3 with Luffy and Zoro talking and it looks like it was through a fish eye lens or a gopro or something. Really strange

The action is great though I guess I'm surprised how long it took Zoro to beat those two grunts.

Nami, Luffy and Zoro are all terrific. I like virtually every scene involving them, and the show suffers when they aren't on screen (Garm is pretty good. Koby kind of has one facial expression).

More than anything it feels very light and fresh and fun. Looking forward to watching the rest.

Also weird trivia that I enjoy is that Zoro is played by the son of Hattori Hanzo from Kill Bill. I literally rewatched Volume 1 like two weeks ago.

Everything felt kinda awkward until now. These last two episodes were snappy and flowed nicely. They really nailed Sanji and his backstory

Having only watched the pre-Baratie episodes so far, I agree with you but I also think thats pretty much the way the early anime felt too.

Man you guys are crazy.

I get we're giving them major props with what they had to work with, but in an ideal world, they don't get limited to just 8 episodes. They made their best choice with what they had, but the right choice is not cutting characters and doing the whole thing.

I understand that this is the real world they could not have done more. Don't correct me on that!

The thing about Krieg is, his actual narrative purpose is exactly what he has in the show: get wrecked by Mihawk, highlight the dangers of the grand line and provide a pirate for Sanji to feed, which all happens. Beyond that he is basically just a roadblock before Arlong Park with a dull fight that goes on for too long and brings the arc down. Opinions will of course vary but I think the Krieg fight is a big patience tester for people getting into One Piece for the first time.

I think Luffy beating the big bad of the arc and being a hero is pretty important to constantly showcase. Also the MH5 thing is still pretty narratively strong on Gin's end. There are parts that could be cut (pearl, the big fish thing that patty uses), and I think you can have a pretty concise Krieg fight.

I don't think we really needed Kreig. Utilizing that space to give Arlong a round 1 win to introduce him a bit earlier and get Luffy to come back for a rematch later is a W for the season overall

Finished this last night. Definitely a lot better than I thought it was going to be going in, and the good news is it seemed to get stronger/more enjoyable as it went on. Definitely got emotional and Sanji's goodbye top Zeff, and the whole Nami scene.

Excited for season two assuming they can keep this same energy going.

Binged through the live-action last weekend and been reading the manga from the beginning. I'm at Kreig right now. I definitely think the live-action changes are for the better. All the things added in the manga are mostly fluff.

I do like the Straw Pirate crew more in the manga, though, with the exception of Luffy.

I was completely into and absorbed by the scene at the end of ep7 and almost crying, both Luffy and Nami's actors were doing a terrific job, great music, looked great

Then Luffy screamed "OF COURSE I WILL" a third time while reaching his arms up and all the air fell out of that balloon. Fucking why. Iaki has done a great job but he's been let down by script and editing on a few occasions and that was one of them.

(Scene was great, don't get me wrong, just...god damn.)

Anyway. I watched the rest and I'm sad it's over. They Return of the King'd the ending of the season a bit but it set up a lot of stuff. I really wanted more scenes of the main cast on the boat together bantering with each other. Those scenes, usually at the beginnings and ends of episodes, were the ones I enjoyed most. I suppose because they were already condensing so much into such a comparatively short space of time, but still - hope to see a little more of that in s2. The show was almost always great when it was the main guys talking and then it cut away to Coby or Zeff or Buggy and it lost something.

I guess I'm somewhat into One Piece now? Like I've been watching clips on youtube and stuff. But it seems impenetrably long. It's weird to have a growing obsession that I'm not likely to cultivate further.

Take it one manga chapter at a time tbh tbh

Also that was them being a little too faithful to the manga, which you know yeah I was like "aww man"

If they had ended at the second of course i will it would have been baller.

Overall though I think they did a great job like everyone has said. It is a relief that my faith in oda was once again rewarded.

You could pick the anime up after the end of Arlon Park if you want to, I don't think you'd really be missing out on much, and there are guides on how to skip the filler stuff (don't skip G-8, its better than the story before and after imo). Considering you can get 3 eps watched in just over an hour, it is manageable. It's a long haul, but you really do not have to watch every episode to get current.

I feel like some people are being very pessimistic about what the show is going to skip. I've seen someone say they'll skip Drum Island and just have Chopper join somewhere else.

The show is not actually skipping that much content. Besides the Gaimon chapter (lol), it hasn't skipped a single arc so far. Biggest removal was the fight against Krieg, and I think most agree that wasn't a big loss.

I do think they will need more than 8 episodes next season if they want to at least keep the pacing, though. If you go by chapter count, it will take 10 episodes in order to adapt from Loguetown all the end to Alabasta, assuming the same pacing.

If we skip any big things next season it won't be Drum island. Little Garden and the giants are more likely than that, and I still think that is unlikely.

Alabasta is the most likely part to see major cuts. Could see it being cut down to just meeting Ace/Smoker, Rainbase, Alubarna. Though I hope we still get Yuba, I could see it just being a cut away as Vivi or a townsperson describes how bad it is.

I do think they dropped the ball a little with dropping Krieg though. It's a big moment for Sanji, to see Zoro and Luffy willing to die for their dream throughout the fight with Mihawk and Krieg. It kinda feels like the crew was just waiting for someone to ask them to join a pirate crew, less so that they were inspired by Luffy.

I believe you could cut down Alabasta Saga into 8 episodes, although I wouldn't want to do it:

  1. Loguetown/Reverse Mountain
  2. Reverse Mountain/Whiskey Peak
  3. Little Garden
  4. Drum Island
  5. Drum Island
  6. Alabasta
  7. Alabasta
  8. Alabasta
Really, the step up will be the budget. Smoker, Ace, and Crocodile make 3 Logias which'll be pretty intensive. Laboon is a huge-ass whale. Chopper and Dalton are two Zoan-users, although Dalton has the benefit that you could probably use a kind of werewolf effect on him, as he stays relatively the same size. Same goes for Chaka, but what are you going to do with Pell? You've got two giants. Mr. 3's wax power will probably also impact the budget a good amount. Are they doing Carue? It'd break my heart if they didn't, but that'll also cost a good amount I'll bet. Then there's Miss Merrychristmas, and Mr. 1 as well (I feel you could probably find some alternatives to CG for Miss Doublefinger). D'you remember the gun-dog?

Feels almost like they'd have to separate Alabasta purely for budgetary reasons!
