Theres a lot of comics released by marvel/dc though Its hard to say all of those suck some do but not all of them. Sadly people online would prefer to be angry than happy. Negativity YouTube videos on comics get more attention than positivity ones

I like light novels and anime, and sometimes they become manga. I couldn't care less about associated media for comics outside of like Marvel vs. Capcom.

I love comics as a medium. I hate the DC and marvel comic universes. I hate the 80 year history, I hate the frequent retcons, I hate the lack of growth.

Off the top of my head some comics I have really enjoyed.

Courtney crumrin
Polly and the pirates
I hate fairyland
Saga
Love and capes
Billy the cat
Marry me

Pretty much that. Even some of the independent labels are declining (IDW *cough**cough*).

Personally I never liked Manga (always felt like it was ripping off French Bande dessine comics), but there is enough older stuff and more obscure independent stuff that I still find stuff to read.

because the people who read comics and graphic novels are the kind of terminally online person who stays to just one specific place on the internet, much like we do here

weirdly enough it's usually bodybuilding forums in my anecdotal experience

while the terminally online who read manga are typically all over the place because they're fuckin freaks

The vast majority of them do. And because of how badly both companies have sucked for more than a decade now, it's hard to ever have enough faith to ever get invested in anything they do now because there's always the sneaking suspicion that even the good stuff will be ruined eventually.

2011 was pretty much the death knell for both Marvel and DC in terms of the last time either of them put out anything worth caring about.

Manga tells stories I can relate to.
Comic books are about super heroes - something I can't at all relate to and greatly dislike.

Modern comics from the big 2 are convoluted for the sake of selling more comics

People don't know where to start. They think you have to start at Batman 1. There are so many titles for batman. Reading order is confusing

why do people keep forgetting Marvel/DC are IP farms. Its what they doother comic book publishers are different but they exist to promote outside products such as films tv shows toilet paper and toys. Most manga is not created just to sell underwear or soda pop

quite a lot of manga (and ESPECIALLY anime- doubly especially isekai) is just made to sell the light novels these days, actually. they aren't as egregious or aggressive about it as marvel/DC are with merch, but there's definitely been a trend towards lax adaptations in the past decade or two because the goal is to be an accessory to the original

as much as I love isekai, it's polluting the waters right now big time

Oh. THAT context makes more sense.

Two reasons:

First, anime has helped to establish and popularize manga in the US, in no small part because manga tends to get adapted into anime an almost 1:1 basis whereas comics are often heavily reimagined when they get shows or movies.

And the discrepancy between tv/film and comics kinda limits the cross-over appeal. It's not 100% either side's fault, other than the broader issue of things running forever and continuity changes being inevitable (although a lot of continuity changes are inherently problematic, like crippling Barbara Gordon, which was edgy in comics and -- in today's climate -- would lead to cancellation attempts).

Secondly, American comics suck right now. Like they're legitimately terrible. Let me preface that a bit further -- Marvel and DC, the two companies with the broadest reach and who largely dominate the market, suck. And because the US's comic industry isn't as varied or robust as Japan's (where it's not just two companies basically running everything), that kinda kills the industry.

The other issue is Marvel and DC have more or less cultivated a narrow lane by leaning into superhero stuff. And I also think it *might* be more expensive to produce comics in the US than Japan, partly due to expectations (since the US tends to favor full-color everything) and also labor costs.

There are other supporting cultural reasons, too, that helped manga offer a larger variety of content. And because the number of manga is drastically higher than the number of US comics, there are inevitably going to be more great titles (along with more bad ones, but those fall by the wayside)
