They're complaining that the d-20 system is bad and before that a whole rant about the dice system in D&D and explain it for people who didn't play it.

"Because in real-world D&D, the dice roll creates opportunity. In Baldurs Gate 3, it stifles it."

One time my party was trying to sneak through a kitchen to BBEG lair and my friend rolled a nat 1 on a sneak check and slipped into a cabinet and knocked over all the pans and took 4 health in damage. Then we had to fight a bunch of Loxodon guards.

So if anything its more forgiving in BG3 than it is in real life

It sounds like they think it's arbitrary where it's applied and potentially weighted to certain outcomes the devs want.

At least that's what I was able to glean from the skimming around all of the drop-downs and shit from that site.

Sooooo again they basically dont get the point of D&D is what it seems like.

Because the Devs put it in the game there would be no design reasons for it if they didnt want people to experience the game as if they were playing D&D.

Larian is pretty good about letting you fail forward on checks. It's just that there might be some collateral damage along the way.

If you hate the RNG though you can fight it with the Guidance cantrip, and using Inspiration points for important rolls(earned from following through on your backgrounds for characters currently traveling in with you). If you bring a Bard you can later Bardic Inspiration on top of that.

That's because it literally is.

Turn off the "Karmic Dice" setting, it's enabled by default and weighs the dice depending on how successful/unsuccessful your recent rolls have been.

That sounds like two different things though. In the first case, the poster was saying Larian weighs rolls toward results they want to happen, but you're describing a karmic system that sounds like it will give you positive or nwgative rolls baswd off of what you've been rolling recently, not what Larian wants.

Ironically, the exact same technology that in the future will allow what Kotaku is basically asking for here (the ability to initiate something like a persuasion or deception roll arbitrarily rather than at moments picked by the developer), will be the technology that puts all of them out of a job.

What percentage of people actually come into these threads and read the Kotaku article versus just get angry about what they imagine it could say?

Because in real-world D&D, the dice roll creates opportunity. In Baldurs Gate 3, it stifles it.Given BG3 obviously cant allow a player to improvise their own responses to situations so instead in the game youre given a list of possible choices in any given scenario.
Like it's a pretty simple complaint they have-- 5e ability checks are designed around flexibility that a video game just cannot provide. Failing checks also lacks the flexibility of DM interpretation so usually either nothing happens or you get engaged in combat. Contrast with Disco Elysium, another dice roll game where fails are as fun as successes (my example, not Kotaku's). They didn't say our favorite game SUX they offered a reasonable take about 5e's systems outside the tabletop setting.

BG3 does provide a lot of that flexibility though. A hell of a lot more than other games would. Failing a check won't lead to an instant game over, or completely shut you off from an area. There are usually other means you can try. At worst, failing multiple checks while simultaneously refusing to use Inspiration points on them will result in certain NPCs meeting a horrible death. Even then though, you can usually cast Speak with Dead and pull relevant info from their corpse.

Leave it to Kotaku to have the worst opinions as usual. Failing dice rolls can lead to interesting things happening. Having everything go your way isn't as fun.

Yeah Kotaku has had a lot of shit articles lately but I don't see an issue with this one. He writes specifically about the mechanic and why he doesn't jive with it.

Just think of dragon age inquisition with dice rolls and turn-based. With better world and quest design.

Yeah, I don't see what's got people so triggered about this article either, beyond the obvious "my brain turns off when i see the word kotaku" factor. Obviously, rpg systems designed to be optimal for play between humans is not going to be as well optimized for play between humans and a computer. There's going to be some awkwardness that comes when you lose out on both a human DM that can create scenarios on the fly and the advantage a system capable of handling far more complex calculations than a human is easily capable of. Which isn't to say tabletop game rules are bad for videogames, but there's a reason most videogames use systems that are optimized for the medium.
