4 ranking is hard since I dont really care about any of them enough. Theyre about as interesting as wet carrots

There are a COUPLE gems, but this is kind of my opinion.

I can't comment on 2/3 because 3 is really hard to find legitimately, and 2 was NOT fun to play, gameplay-wise. But in my opinion, Final Fantasy as a franchise didn't really start to get good in terms of storytelling until FF6. FF1 is very standard fantasy without even notable characters; FF4 expands the characterization a bit, but the cast is still very generic in their archetypes; FF5, I love for Faris and Galuf...but they're really the only standouts and the main duo are generic as hell; FF6, even though I don't care for Sabin...the core five characters all feel strongly-written on an individual level, and the overall story with the Emperor and Kefka feels solid as well. And then I'd say storywise, FF6 through FFX is the golden era. I don't LIKE X, but that's not because it's boring so much as it's really really dumb to me. But really really dumb is still more interesting than the stories of FF12 and FF13 (I love 13, but...not for the overarching story, that's for sure).

FF3 is super easy to find now with the pixel remasters, but I still have no interest in playing it

Id probably say the best characters from 4 are Rydia, Cid, Yang & Edge, but theyre all very very low down the FF character ranking for me too

How different is Pixel 3 compared to the DS version? I hated FF3 on DS

Ok, I wasn't going to track down and post my IV ranking but it sounds like I need to dampen the Edge love a bit so:

Namingway > Tellah > Cid P > Golbez > Rydia > Edward > Fusoya > Yang > Rosa > Cecil > Porom > Palom > Kain >>>>> Edge

Rubicante is one of the better series antagonists imo.

The Robazoid special of "the inequality would look better if you completely reversed it"

I feel like Cecil is the star of IV and generally a perfect FF protagonist for what the series was going for at the time

people will say hes plain and has a simplistic arc but like, its a 30+ year old JRPG are you expecting the same stuff from today? Plus sometimes FF overcomplicates their characters backgrounds and it negatively affects them

Yeah, but I'm not sure he'll ever get another shot at it. Some characters get one shot (like Laguna).

3 is super easy to find legitimately since both the DS version and Pixel Remaster are on Steam, and I'm sure a potato could run either of those nowadays. But the DS version sucks and while everyone raves about the Pixel Remaster, I'm still unclear on what they did to it to make it good, since 3 just seemed like a flawed game to me when I played it on the DS.

I'd also say that 2's story is decent for its time. It's not going to blow you away, but it's much more narrative focused than 1 or 3.

oh to answer VI from a number of topics earlier on if DFFOO has decreased my opinion on any characters

I dislike Onion Knight, he's the "lead" of Act 3 but he's a whiny bitch who just goes on about how he'll never live up to Warrior of Light's leadership

Sounds like another reason to hate Warrior of Light for being the boring Marty Stu of the series

My only problem with Cecil is he completes his arc at the end of act 1 and the game keeps going for 20 hours afterwards. Dark Knight Cecil is much more interesting than Paladin Cecil!

This is exactly it for me. Dark Knight Cecil learning and growing from a Dark Knight that does horrible things, into a Paladin would be so much more interesting than just the rapid transformation that turns Cecil into somewhat of a generic, John Cena style good guy. That's why I like Kain better, because he kinda has to go through that transformation over the course of the entire game, even stubbornly refusing to abandon his well-ingrained ways until he can no longer deny the morality of the game.

I hate Warrior of Light for marginalizing characterizing the classes from FF1 mostly.

Anyway FF3 isn't great. People hating on the DS version around here is hilarious because of all the FF9 fans around here (FF3's biggest problem is glacial combat but FF9 is worse at this)

nothing wrong with that imo! Game doesnt have to revolve so much about Cecil the character, it just becomes oh what silly twist can we introduce to you all that you dont see coming

Honestly, I can fully acknowledge that FF9 has some problems storywise and character-wise (some of the characters do feel a little generic or annoying, admittedly). But for me, personally, Zidane has the charisma needed to carry that game in a way Cecil doesn't for me. And Kuja is a MUCH more devastating and memorable villain to me than Golbez. Those two are the main character and main antagonist, so their characterization boosts the game more than the rest of the cast might. Plus, when the lead characters have strong personalities, it does boost the overall story as well. In my opinion.

it's not about kuja vs golbez

it's about necron vs zeromus

Id say FF3 on DS at least has a bigger problem. A stupid final dungeon that also has a boss who can wipe your whole party completely out of your control if youre unlucky with its RNG

Not sure you've played original FF3 but that was a common thing in the game

I havent played the original 3 before. My only experience with it is the DS version and it wasnt really worth the time/effort it took to finish it

The whole Golbez and Kuja being upstaged by some rando is a thing that happens more often than not in the series. Like,how often has the final boss been the original (or at least early established) villain in this series? Mateus, Exdeath, Sephiroth, and Vayne?

FFIV and FFVIII are the only games where you actually go to the moon

Technically you only go to a space station that's orbiting the moon in VIII.

and the main kingdoms being led by power hungry monarchs (although different motivations for both), and Eiko and Rydia being thematically similar (orphan prodigal summoners), and the usage of crystals (though yeah this is just a old school thing that IX tries to go for), and flying chocobos

I also find both battle systems similar in a way? They dialed back IX a lot compared to what VII and VIII brought so thats intentional to the nostalgic feel IX is going for

but yeah thats just how IX is built, an attempt to be a love letter to the old FFs after VII and VIII shook the formula up

FFIX is a tribute game that borrows from every other game in the series in its own ways. The FFIV similarities are probably just more obvious than others.

Yeah, IX outright namedrops a ton of characters from the old games. It's just that most of them were mistranslated or from Japan only games, so us Americans missed most of them.

EXP boost helps a lot. Makes the game way shorter/easier.

These are big stretches and lean into the tribute camp more than the derivative camp often than not. Power hungry monarchs is probably the only thing that isn't a wink wink "eh?" thing and to me that's one of those bland things I'm putting the plots on blast for.

That being said, even though he had no primary supporter (who makes rounds regularly), Tidus is still somewhat spicy, given how up until this round, he was almost always guaranteed survival due to 3 or 4 people willing to have his back when the chips were down. Even this round required Junk/MZero to miss it, and Cloud to be in danger to force Leon's hand, AND Andy being asleep for the second hour.

Just to add another one, I would have saved Tidus there if Ashe had been safe. Or maybe if I had just checked earlier. I remembered the contest existing like a minute before Leon's save but I wasn't at my computer, and while I was thinking about what to do it kinda just ended.

Talking about Tidus being a spicy elim was spicy

Ultimately I just think I have a different view of the terminology, can't speak to how others on this side of the fence feel, but I use "spicy" interchangeably with "surprising" so who counts as that always varies from contest to contest save a few that enjoy continuous support every year.

I do think X being in this state is a bit shocking though, really have to get it together next year.
