What's unexpected is the director himself is black yet was pushing for this... why was he so insistent on putting Jessica Alba in creepy uncomfortable looking blue contact lenses and make her skin as pale as possible with blonde valley girl hair? There were actual news reports on issues with Jessica Alba and the director.

I don't see how the director being Black has anything to do with trying to turn Jessica Alba into a White valley girl type. Maybe that director had a preference for blondes with blue eyes or maybe he wanted the character to look like she did in the comics.

I'm not saying it's right to make an actor hide their ethnicity. But I don't think this is necessarily kissing up to The Man.

Not for movies that I know of, otherwise they would have screaming about he casting of Mai in the KoF movie. Videogames are a different story. Months of screaming over Lara Croft in the TR reboot, or Tifa in FF7R.

I guess you're not familiar with that term.

The Man refers to White society; specifically, the decision-makers who maintain the status quo. I'm saying he's not necessarily the Black guy who's kissing up to the boss. He may have another reason for wanting to turn Jessica Alba into the White valley girl type.

Yeah, I have to say I was shocked when I went to check the director's history. When I saw Barbershop on there that basically what inspired this whole topic. Also looking at his later movies made me realize why those 2 crappy f4 movies had such a campy yet unfunny tone. Suddenly it makes sense and fits perfectly.

I remember John Byrne being banned from his own fan forum because he said latina women with blonde hair look like prostitutes when the PR images of Alba as Sue were published in a thread. (In truth, Byrne had said several other reprehensible things on his site before that, but the Alba remark was the last straw).

Makes me wonder why the studio decided to go with him for these movies in the first place.

Actually thinking on it those crummy very mid-2000s movies actually had a lot of the ingredients for what would later become MCU movies, like taking a director known for comedy and putting him in charge, having lots of (super lame) jokes, and embracing the costumes and look of comic book FF. At that time all superhero movies were so afraid/ashamed of having their comic book movies feel like or look like comic books that it basically amounted to everyone wearing black spandex.

It's just that they were completely cooked wrong.

It's a good example of studios wanting to have the cake and eat it too. Jessica Alba was pretty popular in the 2000s, but they also were more concerned with the actors looking like the characters instead of acting well.

It took too long, like until the 2010s and I like to think Hamilton, where diverse range casting became widely utilized and it was more important for the actor to actually play the character well in the context of the story instead of simply looking like the character. Jessica Alba wasn't really a great actor either but they were already using her for eye candy anyways. The director had both movies do scenes where "oops she doesn't have her clothes and is naked now" (which also probably fueled the strife between them in addition to the weird whitewashing thing)

I don't know who any of that is but that reminds me of a funny story regarding Gloria on Modern Family, specifically Sofia Vergara. She's actually a natural blonde but when the show started out she had really dark hair because producers told her that's the more stereotypical hispanic look so she obliged.

https://static.independent.co.uk/s3fs-public/thumbnails/image/2015/07/17/09/Modern-FamilySofi.jpg

But as the show went on and gained traction and she started to have more leeway she eventually had her hair look closer to how it actually is.

https://www.looper.com/img/gallery/modern-familys-sofia-vergara-doesnt-care-about-gloria-being-a-stereotype/l-intro-1677533910.jpg

It's funny how perception dictated so much even to this day.

Sorry.

John Byrne is a famous comic book writer-artist from the 70s and 80s. His three most famous runs were for She-Hulk, The Fantastic Four, and his reboot of Superman. Many of the stories from the 90s "Superman: The Animated Series" cartoon were based on his Superman stories.

He's also an all around racist sexist narcissistic asshole. Even his die hard fans have turned their backs on him since the early 2000s.

The point is there was literally no reason to edit Jessica Alba to look whiter. If they were so worried about accuracy, they should have hired a blonde, white actress. They hired Alba because she was popular at the time and people found her hot. ...But they found her hot without needing to whiten her at all, so who was this change even for?

First of all, you realize why it has become more frowned upon over time, right?

Second of all, there was literally no reason to. Nobody was asking for it after the first movie. And if they were so determined, they could have just recast the role. As it is, it stands out because she looks different than she does in the first movie, despite being the same actress. And it's not even well done, it looks really bad.

It's okay to call out something stupid for being stupid, you know.

International audiences

This seems unlikely, since international audiences had no issue with her in the first movie. And that makes sense. Alba isn't particularly dark at all. The second movie actually did worse with international audiences than the first.

It was just some weird decision that doesn't make sense. It would have made sense if they did it in the first movie, but they didn't.

People where complaining about how absolutely trash the movie was. If theyd pulled off F4 part 2 AND Green Lantern the super hero movie boom would have started earlier.
