It's a good example of studios wanting to have the cake and eat it too. Jessica Alba was pretty popular in the 2000s, but they also were more concerned with the actors looking like the characters instead of acting well.

It took too long, like until the 2010s and I like to think Hamilton, where diverse range casting became widely utilized and it was more important for the actor to actually play the character well in the context of the story instead of simply looking like the character. Jessica Alba wasn't really a great actor either but they were already using her for eye candy anyways. The director had both movies do scenes where "oops she doesn't have her clothes and is naked now" (which also probably fueled the strife between them in addition to the weird whitewashing thing)
