Not an invalid concern. Man, that place is going to be a powder keg for decades. So many more innocents will die.

It'll be a drop in the bucket compared to everything else that's polluted the land. At least Ukraine can track the general locations of these to make cleanup a little easier.

Up to 30% of Ukraine is already "there might be mines here, we dont know for sure" which will take them 70 years to clean up.

Bosnia still has exclusion zones because of landmines, and that was 30 years ago.

Going to be decades worth of cleanup.

The real tragedy is we didn't send them sooner. They have been operating western artillery in decent numbers since last summer. Loading them with cluster munitions might have turned the tide of some battles.

They load artillery shells that airburst into a bunch of bomblets before hitting the ground. It's basically saturating an area with grenades.

That's pretty much par for the war. The west slowly expands what it'll provide Ukraine, hoping the next thing won't be needed. But by hesitating it drags out the conflict.

Well, besides the obvious issues raised in this (and discussed by both sides), there is the perception issue by the public in the nations supporting Ukraine.. who also happens to be signatories to the treaty. And quite a bit of the war depends on fostering supportive opinions in those nations, so there is going to be a hit taken on that front.

But beyond that, I guess it's shocking that such munition is being seen as justifiably needed in Ukraine (and we all know that cost of public support vs benefit on field has been worked out by the top minds in the US military / civilian government), since all reports coming out indicated a resounding success on the vast majority of the fronts, with Russia being reduced to shambles.

If such munitions are being justified as necessary against Russia (and, just as importantly, worth the loss of some support for Ukraine), then it sort of implies that the recent battles have not been going as well as news and public statements have suggested.

I mean, I was under the assumption that Ukraine had broken through the line and were working on rolling up the witless Russian forces (especially after Russians lost a few valuable assets and morale with the Wagner coupe).

There is no moral highground in a war of extinction.
Russia wants to end Ukraine. Ukraine does not want to be ended.

I actually heard the BBC get into a discussion with someone vehemently against it and a Ukrainian soldier vehemently in favor of it.

I see the humanity logic in being against them, however as the Ukrainian soldier explained, they don't intend to use them when bombing areas with civilians and like 30% of their land is already mined cause of Russians, which they are actively removing, however the Russian cluster bombs have a 25% rate of not exploding, whereas the U.S.-provided ones are 1-3%, so even in that regard they're "safer" than what Russia has been doing since the start.

You can't even go into the forest outside Kyiv and they had to train the populace not to pick up random things because it could be a bomb. Russia apparently enjoys putting these bombs into children's toys, which has led to children ignorantly picking them up and dying as a result.
