I cannot access Twitter ever since it decided to shoot itself in the leg with a howitzer, but fortunately there's Mastodon. Alas, no embed linking as of yet.

Today there is a lot of news from the Orikhiv direction. Here, Ukrainians finally confirmed that they breached the last line of defense in front of Robotyne and that Russian forces now only have the settlement itself to rely on. Today Ukrainian 47th Mechanized Brigade released combat footage that shows exactly how Ukrainians managed to push through despite immense Russian resistance.

Yeah, instead they probably set up events/circumstances to allow it to malfunction and cause a meltdown. If they cant use Nuclear Weapons then they will find a loophole and cause a nuclear related disaster by other means.

You're not allowed to call the first two instances of it in 1945 that for some reason, though.

I really hope Russia isn't this stupid, but I'm very disappointed by the lack of tough talk by NATO to dissuade this. Poland has been a champ w/ calling any fallout going into their borders an act of war, but the U.S. hasn't been anywhere near vocal enough that Russia ceases to exist if they nuke Ukraine (including via blowing up a nuclear plant).

I think the US should threaten something. A line in the sand that we'll actually back up. Like sending the planes (which we should be doing anyway, but...)

Russia certainly has a specific scenario in mind based on how they withdrew not just Russian soldiers but Ukrainian employees whom work for the Russian Rosatom state corporation that specializes in nuclear energy.

Because it was a military action during a state of total war without prior treaties existing on the use of nuclear and radiological weapons.
It wasn't terrorism for the same reason every other bomb that dropped in that war wasn't called terrorism.

Looks like the Ukrainians still have a lot of work to do if they want to force a breakthrough in these defenses but apparently they are preparing to take advantage of a weakness they found. These defenses look pretty solid, but if the Ukrainians know of a weakness they'll be attacking in force very soon and we've seen in Kharkiv and Kherson what happens when the Ukrainians attack in force...

Once breached and the positions are compromised these defenses are pretty much useless because they can be attacked from all sides, so when the Ukrainians do make a breakthrough expect to see a mass retreat at least in the area of the breakthrough.

1) We've seen that Russia operates by calculations and interests/values different from the West, so it may not be about "smart / stupid" from our perspective.

2) Having that said, after year and a half, I'm pretty sure you know the answer to your statement.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine has warned fellow citizens that the Russians may soon start preparations for provocations at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, and placed explosive-like objects on the roofs of two power units.

According to the military, their detonation should not damage the power units, but it may create an image of a shelling by Ukrainian forces. Russian media and Telegram channels report such actions of their military, too.

The automotive blog The Drive has an excellent sub blog about military matters called The War Zone, and they have many very excellent posts about the war. Very good, and almost too detailed(the articles are very long). Their lead author, Tyler Rogeway is well regarded. Many people(including myself) followed him to The War Zone from his previous job at Foxtrotalpha.

Gonna be a long few days worrying about the fallout (unfortunate pun) of whatever Putin gets up to with the ZNPP. At this point I'm just waiting to hear the sirens and tell my family I love them. Might be doomer thinking but this truly is the closest I've felt to nuclear war in my life time.

I'd put money on Shoigu taking over and/or succeeding Putin, exactly because he's unpopular.

Pretty sure I posted an article a while ago (in the older topics on the other board) about there being reports months ago of Russian soldiers who were occupying the NPP placing explosive charges around the place?

Can't remember if it was claims from the staff working there or that international group (can't remember name) who have been going there to make sure it's safe, or someone else?

Never went further than the Guardian's article (I think it was them) myself to see if others were reporting the same thing, but surely - as has been said - no one would believe Russia's side of the story, at least those of a neutral stance in the conflict thus far...?

I've heard so many conflicting reports regarding this plant at this point it's hard to honestly say what's going on. On the one hand you've got major concerns. But on the other hand you have people stating that 6 out of the major reactors have been in cool down for months and that the last major one entered cool down a bit ago. You have an international nuclear body with people on site supposedly guarding it, but also that they were able to rig explosives to the roofs that may not actually do anything because of how reinforced the top is.

At this point I don't know and the confusion just makes it worse.

Also for who asked; nowhere close to the plant. I'm in the US, just a doomer of figuring that even any conventional response by NATO is going to be met with a potential nuclear response from Russia.

Ukraine says Russia preparing to attack nuclear power plant. Thats a redline for NATO. I believe it was stated any attack on a nuclear power plant would be grounds for direct NATO intervention.
