A lot of attempts at socioeconomic explanations etc just don't ring true to me. Sure, people may say "they're rich who cares" when someone presses them that their online posting behavior is immoral or exploitative. But that doesn't mean they began engaging in that behavior after a moral calculation. Rather, the internet encables a group complicity where you never need to consider the moral dimension in the first place. Appeals in defense of the behavior's morality are just ad hoc, and only exist because someone demanded justification.

I've read that they were going well past the maximum depth that sub could handle. I feel bad for the kid, and for the other passengers if they were clueless about this and the other safety issues.

Plenty of people are killed all the time due to dumb luck and the circumstances they were born or forced into. These people had all sorts of resources and still chose to do a dumb thing that killed them. By comparison, I can't bring myself to care.
