Doubt that the other 4 knew that the sub was a poorly constructed piece of shit that would implode and had people warn the CEO about it. Not like James Cameron went on a bunch of deep sea voyages not just to the Titanic, but way deep in the Mariana Trench in subs that were way more safe or anything. Yep, was more or less using your quote to buttress my argument which while I will never understand the appeal behind deep sea dives even if I had the billion smackers to be able to go on them, I'm not going to shame someone who thinks that anglerfish and ancient shipwrecks or whatever are interesting and wanted to check them out. Probably thought it'd be like James Cameron's dives, and the only ones who had any idea it could go pear shaped was the trashbag CEO that knew the sub was structurally shit and maybe the 19 year old who didn't even want to go to begin with.

Stupid games, stupid prizes, except for the 18 year old kid who got browbeaten by his dad to get in the sub. He didn't ask to be in that situation. The thing was a deathtrap, the CEO fired the guy who pointed it out, and ended up getting all his passengers killed because he decided to cheap out on the sub construction.

The ocean doesn't care if you live or die, as many sailors will attest. So you have to put in the work necessary to ensure the safety of yourself and your passengers. Money, as they found out the hard way, does not translate to invincibility.

It sounds like jealousy as long as you completely fail to understand human emotion and have ignored all the words everyone keeps saying.

Comedy = tragedy + time.
Society as per usual don't get comedy.

While this is definitely tragic and nobody should be "happy" these people are dead, it's hard to have much sympathy for anyone but the kid since this situation was 100% preventable and seems to be the result of some rich folks having more money than common sense.

Plus the CEO ignoring several red flags in what I can only assume were attempts to cut costs.

I'm no more jealous of people in a sub than I am of people climbing the Everest.

I feel very sorry for the 19 year old who just went because of his dad.

I feel sympathy for would-be explorers and professionals just trying to make a living or spend their money doing something beyond hoarding.

I do not feel sympathy for a CEO and his company who ignored warnings on safety and cost people their lives.

You're gonna see a lot more of this once space tourism kicks into high gear.

If we're truly committed to 'not being intellectually lazy', then do we really find it compelling that there would not have been a meme fad about this were the submersible passengers middle class? The idea that schadenfreude from this absurd event must be the result of class war tension is projection.

People aren't doing a moral calculation to decide whether to engage in speculation and poking fun about an extraordinary event. News outlets did not mine this story because the suffering of billionaires is a guaranteed page turner for the frothing masses. This is how people act at distance. The human cost is easier to abstract and the humor can then be easily found.

Depends on how poorly constructed the sub is?

The world is miserable hellhole where millions/billions of people suffer and die daily and you people don't give a fuck and openly mock the people who do.

But I point out that this was completely preventable and I'm a "hypocrite that laughs at people's deaths". I'm not laughing. I get no pleasure from these senseless deaths.

Weird how you all find your empathy when the news beats the misfortunes of cool, important people into your head. All I have really been doing is pointing out this is essentially "missing white girl syndrome"
