brutal 1st match, hoping temporal can go the distance but also don't want to see koi yume lose either...
2 songs that feel like they should work better than they do tbh, for such a major song on it and a contemplative ballad, close in the distance feels weirdly unremarkable compositionally (not to mention slightly engrish). on the other hand, toxic despite being unconventional and seemingly ambitious even by splatoon standards in a way that impresses me as expected, also mostly just comes across too silly and random for me to to really appreciate in that way. probably just me being weirdly negative because match 1 was a hard act to follow tbh

What's up with all the songs with Japanese vocals I swear I've heard more songs with Japanese vocals in this contest than I have in the rest of my life up to this point. I think I prefer Sky Tower to Temporal Tower, but hey the Dialga's Fight to the Finish! motif is still cool. Close in the Distance is a really cool song actually, I think I really like FFXIV music. Toxic Anoxic... y'know it's been ages since I touched Splatoon 3 but I think this works in context? Out of context no thank you. Everything's Alright sounds like it'd make me cry like the bitch I am if I heard it in context (and looking at the Wikipedia page that sounds about right), but out of context it's just a nice song I guess. K'Sante sure is a song that exists. Guess it's more interesting than Love Dream?

go away Utawarerumono songs. We've already had the better ones in previous years. Temporal Tower doesn't do much for me either - feels like it should be way faster. It's at least got something going on though.

I wonder if I'd care about Close in the Distance if I hadn't played the game? The scene it plays in is pretty amazing, and some of the emotion probably rubs off on me because of that. I don't like the ending though. Its competition is also much better in-game, but I find it quite abrasive on its own.

Everything's Alright feels like what Close in the Distance would be if I had no attachment to it, heh. Kinda nice, but not great. And K'Sante is awesome, so this isn't close. I feel like I've enjoyed almost all the nominated League songs.

Ryo Nagamatsu is probably one of the single human beings I have the most respect for at this point. thank you forwhatever you did to make it possible for stuff this relentlessly atonal and with actual like. irrational time and stuff to be in a NINTENDO game. I never thought I could ever hear thinking plague/5uu's tier stuff in a mainstream video game, but here it is. this beats many actual rio/avant-prog artists in terms of pure absurdity, but that's one of my favorite types of music. thank you Nagamatsu for your belief that if even one person could like something uncommonly liked, that it's all worth it.
