Varra de Luca
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/6/2/AAUHRBAAEgwq.png
Lover of Count Vertigo and mother to Checkmate agent Brennus Vertigo, Varra de Luca apparently never truly gave up her pledges to Ras al Ghul, and as a result, around the time of Brennus magical development, Varra apparently tried to participate in yet another territorial war between his daughters. Rumor is that she allowed Ras to be killed, and after that point, its anyones guess as to where she went or what she was up to. One thing was for sure - both she and Vertigo played some sort of ill-defined yet important role in the development of the Society, and the pair of them may be key in understanding what happened in a world under Darkseid. By the time the first hints of answers were to be had, Brennus encountered his mother in a park at the center of Chicago, where he tried to bring her home. Instead, he discovered her to be the Prime Fury of Chicago - a powerful, ruthless, cruel being that beat her son, mocked him, and warned him to never return to the city.

Vyndktvx
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/6/7/AAUHRBAAEgwv.png
Within the nation of Badhnisia lay a door. And through that door lay the Fifth Dimension, in the throes of its own crisis - the Mital Crisis: Unlimited! The MCU was a terrible thing, a video game world where the rules of logic were replaced with the laws of video game logic, all of which were controlled by the powerful, wild and unpredictable imp Vyndktvx. But imps and djinns alike must still adhere to certain strictures, and while outsisde of the doorway, Freddy and Alice waged war alongside the ancient Lords of Order and Chaos against the Spectre, T'charr and Terataya, within, a pitched battle against Vyndktvx was carried out in true QTE fashion. Ultimately, the creature was trapped within a djinn's wishing pen, and in exchange for a promised eventual release, Vyndktvx promised to imbue Freddy with some of his powers - powers that could alter the laws of nature itself. And thus, Freddy's Captain Marvel gained the ability to manipulate plants, trees, the life essence of the Green itself.

Veridium
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/8/8/AAQcMAAADxQc.jpg
Hes no Will Magnus, but David Magnus has resolved to serve as repairperson and caretaker of his brothers greatest creations, the dormant Metal Men. Veridium has clearly unresolved issues with his brother, but he has set them aside for the time being in resolution to help stand against the tyranny of Darkseid. A constant source of authority in the Robotics Annex, and honestly, one of the more interesting unexplored parts of Z'onn Z'orr. There certainly are the faint stirrings of a... let's call it jealousy in Veridium for his rival brother. That's a phrase for it. How will that sibling rivalry continue to evolve as the story of Magnus becomes more and more impactful on the party's aims?

Ventriloquist
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/0/7/AAJ38fAAEFgD.png
Fastbreak giveth and Fastbreak taketh away. After being left for dead following a botched hit on her fiance, Peyton Riley dragged herself to the hospital, believing Scarface, the puppet of the Ventriloquist, had done so. So attached to the persona of Scarface was Peyton that Neron gifted her a magical living Scarface in exchange for her soul. Peyton, however, was released from the deal when the puppet was destroyed by Fastbreak. Incarcerated in Arkham Asylum, Fastbreak quickly became an obsession of Peyton thanks to his consistent visits. But over time, he stopped visiting, stopped caring. When Peyton escaped Arkham in the Society Breakout, she had found a new puppet and a new purpose - to show Fastbreak that she would not be so easily forgotten. Now, she seeks to grow her cell in the Society, from Baltimore, all the way to Washington, where she knows Fastbreak worked with the Cluemaster. And neither she nor Socko will be stopped. You gotta be careful where you cast about your forgotten toys, Xander. The consequences of your actions can change everything.

#4 - Guy Gardner
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/6/7/AAOJ0pAADYCD.jpg

Guy Gardner, the most contentious Green Lantern in the entire Corps. Its almost a miracle that Guy Gardner has lived as long as he has, since everywhere he goes, mayhem and chaos is sure to follow. Guy Gardner, a handpicked replacement Lantern for Hal Jordan, started his life as a University of Michigan graduate and special education teacher, but he eventually wound up a full-time superhero. If you listen to Guy Gardner tell the story, he was the runner-up to Hal Jordan in Abin Surs fateful lottery, coming up short only by a hair to the so-called Greatest Lantern who ever lived. The truth seems murkier than that, but when Hal studied the history of Abin Sur, he did come to one crucial realization - Abin Sur hadnt planned for a replacement should things have gone awry. Hal took that heart, and he began studying Abins own records, learning of Guy Gardners near-inclusion into the Corps. Hal decided that, should something happen to him, he wanted a replacement prepared to face whatever evils plagued him, and thus, Hal inducted Guy Gardner into a probationary status with the Corps. Guy was the first ever replacement Lantern, and the arrogance that welled inside of him from this dubious honor would only swell as he made greater strides within the Corps.

Wwhether as a Green Lantern or - more recently - as the Warrior, having discovered that he possesses a Vuldarian heritage that allowed him to transmogrify his body parts into organic weapons, Guy also possessed, for a short period of time, Sinestros ring, capable of wielding it just as skillfully as a regular Lantern ring. More recently, however, his body began to reject his Vuldarian DNA, and Guy nearly died as his body turned itself inside out on the same day that Coast City reappeared. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, Guy was being prepared by Hal Jordans spirit to return to active duty with the Green Lantern Corps, and for the last several months, Guy has relished his time as one of the senior Green Lanterns, taking his opportunity to lord it over anyone who will listen, whether it be those on Earth or those in space.

Guy Gardner is your enemy. Not because he thinks he's your enemy, but because YOU think that if he isn't your enemy, he's kind of a bad person. But you only think that because he's rude, offensive, callous, overly loud, obnoxious, and maybe a little sexist, homophobic and racist. And then you start to peel back the layers, and the slick, slimy veneer begins to fade as you realize beneath the color and is a man. A humie man with convictions and a quiet character that, while intensely, intensely flawed, maybe has purpose in the universe. And you start to maybe, maybe, just MAYBE, come to accept that Guy... might have a heart after all. He's the quickest to ally with the party. Hell, he put the party on ice simply because he knew that their words might shake the Guardians from their Sinestro-instated stupor. And you know what? It worked, for the next thing we know, a single Guardian broke from their plurality... and change their mind. Their own mind. Not all of the minds of the Guardians, no. Not a solution. But the hints, the stirrings, of something greater.

Just look at the tale of Ice, or the story of Gal Gardner. Or listen to Lanterns who otherwise have no strong attachments in the Corps. As it turns out, Guy Gardner is a patient, kind man when it comes to a Lantern like Rot Lop Fan, whose inability to see has left him an unintentional outcast among the Corps. In fact, it's Rot Lop Fan that sings the praises of Guy Gardner most highly. After all, as it turns out, Guy Gardner spent the first years of his career teaching special education. Of all things, Guy Gardner is a teacher, a gentle cultivator of potential. You just have to know where to look.

Guy Gardner remains every bit as horrible as you all believe. But he may, may, MAY just be the hero you need, in the moment. There's a fragile heart there. Maybe even a compassionate one. It just takes a little bit of patience to find. But the finding it... might just be worth it.

Top three - the final trio.

Guy is an absolute mess. Nothing better than the panel where he says "... Again?" He's somewhat bullied by the Corps members, but the other Earth Lanterns out up with him because they know him and can trust him. And his telepathic barkeep likes him because he is a genuine and honest guy, even if that means he is outwardly a jerk.

Dealing with Guy as the party is... Tough in ways, but easy in that he's a Lantern we can feel superior to. Morally and with manners - he's Guy. Batman knocked him out with one punch. So he's kind of a joke, but that also makes it easy to be around him, to compare to him, and to find a place.

We haven't seen much of Guy in action, but I'm looking forward to it. That's what we're missing right now - the right opportunity to take Guy seriously.

Veridium making his pipe is one of the things from the campaign that is so easy to picture in my head, up there with 'Chimp sitting in his booth'. He might not be nearly what Chimp is, but his way of standing is so clear. I really adore the guy, and his respect and care for the Metal Men is so sweet, and the fact that he does it partially out of spite for Will makes it all the sweeter. Who doesn't love someone doing good things for not so good reasons?

And Guy is...Guy. He's a jerk, and he likes that reputation. Roz'etta tried to have a heart to heart with him because he outed her and Lashina to Hal (which Guy defended by pointing out that due to recent events basically everyone knew about them anyways) and Guy told her he doesn't want people to start thinking ol' Guy Gardner is mushy.

#3 - Susie Thompkins
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/0/7/AAOJ0pAADaVj.png
This isn't a serious ranking.

The niece of Lois Lane, Susie Tompkins was whisked away from Kansas during the upheaval following the Battle of Metropolis. During a tour of the Doom Patrol Headquarters, Susie discovered the helmet of the long-forgotten hero Mento, and, as she donned it, she gained unimaginable abilities. Susie was overcome by the nature of the helmet, and it changed her. After trickery freed her from her capped imprisonment, Susie gravitated to Rosetta, who she saw as someone who might care for her in the way Sisty and Dinky did not. Thus, Susie came to be adopted by Rosetta, remaining at her side as long as she could manage. Rosetta, in an effort to help normalize the straying tendencies of violence in Susies mind, has enlisted tutelage from the likes of Catman and Jesse Custer to help curb the worrying nature of Susies psychopathy. It has since been found that Susie is a very big fan of cats. Recently, Susie Tompkins was selected to join a field team in Las Vegas, which resulted in her disappearance on multiple occasions, usually to surprising results. Since that time, Susie has been a member of the infiltration team, has arrested Bloodfruit for a B&E, and has slowly been cultivating Sarah Washington to be her personal OMAC.

No one fails to emote like Susie. No one silently attempts to commit heinous atrocities like Susie. And especially no one has captured the heart of the death-worshipping Saturnian cultist like Susie. And, I admit, she's especially good at the little moments. Giving her a unique "mechanic" in terms of roleplaying means that suddenly there is an extremely fresh voice to be had from a presentation perspective, but Susie goes beyond that. I admit that I am often fascinated by the mentally divergent. Susie's lack of emotions, her inability to experience empathy... these are subjects that I think have hardly ever been tackled in these campaigns, and to put such heady subjects on the shoulders of a child, one that should be a totem of innocence... I think that's a recipe for something really special. Can Susie teach herself right and wrong? Can she ever intuit what she's meant to feel? I can't wait to see. Her mother certainly believes in her, believes in giving Susie every opportunity to succeed that she can manage - but at the same time, Roz'etta isn't a firm hand. Susie is allowed to get away with certain kinds of murder. The question is, if Roz'etta pushes back, will she lose her precious little girl?

Two to go. We're halfway there.

Roz'etta has lately been pushing topics that have upset Susie, as much as she's tried to handle them gracefully, and in that way Susie has gotten more emotional lately. I'm not sure what it means. Is she feeling? Is she acting how she thinks she should feel? Is it based off some other need, the need to be as strong as she possibly can, so Roz'etta will be proud?

...More than anything, Roz'etta is scared of scaring Susie. Scared that Susie will be scared Roz'etta doesn't love her anymore.

I have no idea what waits in their future, but it's sure to hurt and be wonderful on the way there.

Roz'etta without Susie is some other person entirely, but ultimately that responsibility to her has taken priority over everything else, despite her growing positions both on Earth and Oa.

Also!

Some Top Susie NPC relationships! (based on purely on gut feeling at this moment that I am sure has me forgetting multiple great ones):

Susie and Tinker! Susie loves cats. Tinker is a cat who was turned into a cyborg cat before being freed by Roseanne Berry, who died in the process. Kid Eternity summoned Roseanne, who would interact with the We3, Bandit the dog, Pirate the rabbit, and Tinker the cat. She would try to explain that she was dead, something the animals struggled to comprehend. Before she disappeared back into the unknown, she left with us her jacket to give to one of the three. Instead of a PC doing it, though, Roz'etta chose to have Susie bring the jacket to Tinker, and it would be Susie who would explain how death is in a way that the poor, sad cat could understand, all while petting him.

Susie and Stargirl. Stargirl is a hero who has been infected with a bit of villainy, something Susie sees and values. Stargirl sees Susie as a little murderous psycho, but she doesn't fear that Susie will go off the deep end and kill her. How does she know that? Well, because Susie would kill the leader of their infiltration team, Pepper Spray, first. Susie respects that level of insight.

Susie and Tommy Jagger. Susie and Tommy's interactions are brief, but really amusing. Jagger knows an untrained child carrying a gun is a bad idea. His solution is not to take Susie's gun from her, but rather teach her gun safety. Susie has been taught to respect her teachers, so she shows Jagger the respect he deserves, maybe even more respect than the PCs do. Really, it's the 'Yes, sir' from Susie that makes it. I like the small things!

Susie and Sarah Washington. Sarah is a OMAC and a child. Susie is a child, cultivating assets, and pretty forceful. A perfect little crime duo, minus the crime. Susie is in a lot of ways protective of Sarah, and it's pretty sweet, and she encourages Sarah to embrace her OMAC nature, which is a little less sweet. Obviously Susie was going to gravitate to Sarah, and Sarah would gravitate to someone closer to her own age. Put those two together, and you have art. Also documentaries, never the Iron Giant.

Susie and Tomorrow Woman: Tomorrow Woman is an abandoned robot, except for the few relationships she has. One of those precious few is Susie, who absolutely adores the perfect being Tomorrow Woman is. It's a bit natural that Susie would be drawn into Roz'etta's social circle, but Tomorrow Woman would be a friend of Susie's even if Roz'etta never approached the robot. Tomorrow Woman needs friends, and the fact that Susie regularly goes to see her (probably to talk about all the killing done in Japan, honestly) makes it all the nicer. I just like NPCs wandering off to talk to other NPCs, okay?

Susie and Manthrax: I love these 'Susie respects a superior' relationships. Manthrax isn't any different. He critiques Susie for overacting, and Susie doesn't get upset, or angry, or disappointed. She accepts it, because this professional actor clearly understands faking emotion better than her. It's such a small part of Susie, but...it's charming. Plus I like Manthrax. I should make more Manthrax scenes happen.

Susie and the Hunkels: In a lot of ways, Sisty and Dinky made Roz'etta and Susie happen. These two tried, but they didn't love Susie, they couldn't. They weren't strong enough. If they were stronger, Susie wouldn't have fallen into Roz'etta arms in tears, choosing her over staying in Calvin City. Their relationship with Susie is the worst of any in the campaign, but that makes it one of the best. They made Susie's greatness possible. Tragedy involving parents made Batman happen after all, right? Right?

Susie and Catman: Ah, Mister Blake. It was through Catman that we found out about Susie's love of cats, and her violent tendencies were...both encouraged and tempered by Catman's teachings. Of course, Catman also broke off from Susie, abandoned her. That left a wound that is still raw on Susie. She wants revenge, but not against Catman, but Cheshire. Cheshire is the one who left her mentor so broken, having the gall to use him to get pregnant. She wants to kill Cheshire's baby. Roz'etta has tried to draw a line there, both with Susie and with Catman, and this is the current source of strife between her and her daughter.

Susie and the Hyperclan: For Mica'kel, family is more than blood. This is proven by him seeing Susie, adopted though she is, as a Saturnian. Mica'kel respects Roz'etta, and that extends to Susie. Susie loves cats, Till'all likes being a fish, both spend time swimming together and...it's really just sweet. I love the Hyperclan so much, and their weird embracing of both Roz'etta and Susie, only strengthened by Susie helping during the Kobra attack, makes them all the sweeter.

Susie and Lucy Lane: Mama! Susie has witnessed her mother surrounded by flames. She has run from Roz'etta in fear that her mother stopped loving her in Calvin City. She wept to leave the Hunkels, and screamed in fear at Mento having a helmet while she could not. But Susie has never been as broken as she is when witnessing her mother, Lucy Lane, in all her glowing-eyed glory. In those moments she is torn between Mama and Mommy, and given Lucy's current loyalties, she cannot have one without the other. It's such a cruel position to put Susie in, made all the worse by the possibility that Lucy isn't Equated (something Susie isn't aware of yet), meaning there exists the cruel possibility of hope. ...Man, Roz'etta's closest characters all have a way of suffering from the pain of hope, don't they?

Susie and Father J'see: Susie's first moral compass, the person who could help her find her footing in the ways of the gods. The person who might have the most patience for Roz'etta of anyone in the entire campaign. Susie doesn't just respect Jesse, she hangs onto his every word, and Jesse is just weird enough of a preacher to handle her in the right way. He was my first thought of someone who could help Susie, and every moment with him has shown that to be right. But...this isn't quite enough to be atop the list of Susie relationships.

Susie and Clark Ross: Clark Ross is a baby, the son of Lana Lang and Pete Ross, named after Susie's Uncle Clark. With others, Susie is sometimes commanding, demanding, cold, heartless, fake, so many things that otherwise would be terrible. With Clark...Susie is the sweetest person she can be, gently holding him. But then pieces of Susie pop free, like talking about how Lana Lang was obviously thinking about her uncle when Clark was being made. Or how easy it would be to snap his neck, because that's what she will do to Cheshire's baby. With many characters she likes, her vicious streak is born of ignorance or innocence. With characters she dislikes, it's her sweeter side that goes hidden away, or if it shows it is a falsehood. With baby Clark, though, Susie is simply Susie. The good and the bad, everything wonderful and terrible she can be. And that's why, somehow, a character who cannot speak sits atop the Susie list. Because it's my list and I can be a little silly with it if I want.

#2 - Amanda Waller
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/4/9/AAOJ0pAADbtt.jpg
Honey, you don't put a queen in second place.

Amanda Waller, former Secretary of Defense, was one of many individuals implicated in the bizarre campaign waged by Lex Luthor in an insane quest to bring Superman to his knees. Waller, swayed by the charisma of one of Americas most silver tongued leaders, came to regret her role with the President at the time, and after being stripped of United States honorifics, she expected to be tried as well. However, A-Day arrived, and with Checkmate having fallen apart, Waller turned into the highest-ranking member and only leader capable of putting resources and intelligence together to combat the threats of the Society and Darkseid. Steadfast and total in her leadership of Zonn Zorr, Waller carefully shepherds her agents as they begin the massive endeavor around the world to bring hope back to those oppressed by the tyranny of Darkseid.

Amanda Waller was as far away from Oracle as I could get in the central role that has become a necessity in these campaigns. Someone must anchor the story as it spins around them, binding all of the spokes together with a firm foundation so nothing ever gets too far out of reach. Instead of the blossoming ultra-competence of Oracle, Waller represents a rather controversial figure. Her actions, unlike Oracle's, don't slowly veer towards a love for her team. Waller might not even be capable of such a thing now. Instead, the Black Queen remains a conductor of a symphony, her eyes on the brushes that paint a masterpiece, not the hands that guide them. Waller is a woman of vision and direction, not a contemplative resource - she will bite back, and hard, should the need arise. Her authority is unquestioned, all a piece of her carefully cultivated public perception, and even in moments of sincerity, there is a distance between Waller and the PCs. Given the stakes of Final Crisis, the world is less malleable in the hands of our players, and that requires a Waller, not an Oracle.

Since her debut, Waller has demonstrated a wide range of leadership abilities - intimidation, distance, nurturing and bonding. She's shown to be a giver and a taker in equal amounts. She's a teacher, she's a villain. Hell, she's a cancer survivor, to boot. But more than anything else to this campaign, she remains one thing. She's the queen.

And then, there was one.

When history has finished writing the tale of Hal Jordan, it is sure to be a story filled with no end of controversy. Hal Jordan was the man who succumbed to Parallax, the embodiment of fear. Hal Jordan was the man who was thought to possess the greatest force of will the Guardians had ever seen, and yet as effortlessly as he wielded his emerald ring, he was just as easily coopted by the yellow aura of fear. Hal had spent his life in service of two things - the Corps, and his hometown of Coast City, where he flew fighter jets for the love of his life, Carol Ferris. But Hal was never able to serve both of these masters at the same time, and as his professional life as a Lantern grew more prominent, Hals personal life fell apart until he had virtually abdicated all responsibilities to Ferris Air, to the woman in his life, to his family. Ultimately, however, Hal could never let go of what made Hal Jordan Hal Jordan, and when Cyborg Superman and Mongul destroyed Coast City, Hal nearly broke. Seizing this opportunity, Parallax began to worm its way into the made of the greatest Lantern, and within days, the Green Lantern Corps had been massacred, the Central Power Battery destroyed and the Guardians killed. By this point, Hal had been consumed entirely by Parallax, who used Hals mind as a template to foster further insanity. Hal was driven to try and unmake the universe, the hope to rebuild it in his own image - one where Coast City survived and thrived. Stopped by Earths heroes at the Dawn of Time, Hal retreated into space, where he brooded and planned, Parallax still inside of him. Eventually, however, when the sun began to fail, Hals greater angels arose, and taking control of himself in a moment of heroic clarity, he sacrificed his life to reignite the sun. This left his soul in a strange state of balance. In the afterlife, Hal Jordan was called upon to serve as host of the Spectre, and for years, he wrestled with Aztar for control of a mission of vengeance, one he thought of as a mission instead of mercy. However, Parallax still remained attached to Jordan, and after years of hosting two of the most powerful entities to ever exist, Parallax broke free. In this moment, the Spectre was excised from Hal Jordan unexpectedly, and Jordan had opportunity, his destiny his own again, to make right the actions of the past. Using what energies remained from the Spectre and Parallax, Hal resurrected the Guardians and reinstated the Corps. Hoping to pay penance for his actions, Hal has returned to active duty as the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, though he has begun to question the Guardians decisions in the wake of the erection of the Grid and the attacks by the Sinestro Corps.

The burden of guilt is crushing, smothering, all-consuming. It takes the greatest will in the world to carry the greatest sin imaginable. And that's the story of Hal Jordan in a nutshell.

The test pilot born in California was a natural beacon of courage and bravery, almost bull-headed and incapable of retreat or retraction. For so long, his great weakness wasn't the color yellow - it was his inability to see himself as anything other than the star, the field leader, the hero. But after the year as Parallax, things changed. Darkness settled in, and the name of Hal Jordan became a curse hurled at the worst of enemies. And as we've gone through this twisting, turning journey of redemption, reacceptance, rebirth, recharge, we've had a chance now to see what Hal's name means to the world, to the heroic community, and, most recently to the Corps he both created and destroyed.

Thankfully, it wasn't in that order.

Hal, to me, is the most fascinating character study we could have of the Big 6. This rendition of Jordan, however, is a departure from comics. I am so committed to this examination, seeing how guilt changes a man, how it serves as a replacement, in some ways, for that yellow imperfection, that simmering fear that lurks within all of us. Only great men can overcome their darkest sins. Will Hal be able to ever live with the knowledge that his hand has slain friends, teachers, mentors, brothers? Does he possess that strength of character? Or does he possess something else - a farther-reaching understanding of emotion that has led him to demonstrate enough compassion to wield the indigo light, enough rage to wield the red? Has Saoirse perhaps pique the pink light of love within him? Certainly Parallax has revealed the capacity for fear.

Hal Jordan. Multifaceted. The first true multi-colored Lantern. His past connects him to every storyline in a deep resonant way, but the future of the #1 character is where my eyes are focused as we close out this list.

A stunning #1 that ranked on almost NONE of the other players' lists! Wow, great job, scarlet.

The fun's not entirely over yet, though. I still have some Top 25s to drop, and I'll probably continue bullet write-ups so long as people are interested. In any event, thanks for taking this ride with me through the (almost) first half of the list!

Wow Hal #1. Didn't realize he had done much in your campaign yet, though I know he often seems to be the main character of DC comics cosmic events. I still prefer Kyle and Guy as far as Earth Lanterns go.

I'd be more worried about Carol and the Star Sapphires than Varra.
