#2 - Amanda Waller

Honey, you don't put a queen in second place.

Amanda Waller, former Secretary of Defense, was one of many individuals implicated in the bizarre campaign waged by Lex Luthor in an insane quest to bring Superman to his knees. Waller, swayed by the charisma of one of Americas most silver tongued leaders, came to regret her role with the President at the time, and after being stripped of United States honorifics, she expected to be tried as well. However, A-Day arrived, and with Checkmate having fallen apart, Waller turned into the highest-ranking member and only leader capable of putting resources and intelligence together to combat the threats of the Society and Darkseid. Steadfast and total in her leadership of Zonn Zorr, Waller carefully shepherds her agents as they begin the massive endeavor around the world to bring hope back to those oppressed by the tyranny of Darkseid.

Amanda Waller was as far away from Oracle as I could get in the central role that has become a necessity in these campaigns. Someone must anchor the story as it spins around them, binding all of the spokes together with a firm foundation so nothing ever gets too far out of reach. Instead of the blossoming ultra-competence of Oracle, Waller represents a rather controversial figure. Her actions, unlike Oracle's, don't slowly veer towards a love for her team. Waller might not even be capable of such a thing now. Instead, the Black Queen remains a conductor of a symphony, her eyes on the brushes that paint a masterpiece, not the hands that guide them. Waller is a woman of vision and direction, not a contemplative resource - she will bite back, and hard, should the need arise. Her authority is unquestioned, all a piece of her carefully cultivated public perception, and even in moments of sincerity, there is a distance between Waller and the PCs. Given the stakes of Final Crisis, the world is less malleable in the hands of our players, and that requires a Waller, not an Oracle.

Since her debut, Waller has demonstrated a wide range of leadership abilities - intimidation, distance, nurturing and bonding. She's shown to be a giver and a taker in equal amounts. She's a teacher, she's a villain. Hell, she's a cancer survivor, to boot. But more than anything else to this campaign, she remains one thing. She's the queen.

And then, there was one.
