I can't even recall the last time I played a new single player game that had cheats. Do those even still exist in modern titles?

I don't care if people do it in single player games, that's there business and I've no problem using save states in old games that had no check points/auto saves/modern save slots myself.

Now if they're cheating and screwing others over in multi-player those people can fuck right off.

The only thing that bugs me is when people use all of the cheats for a game then complain loudly about how boring it was. If you use cheats, fine, but you don't get to discuss the game online. :)

I kinda felt this for people who immediately time travelled and hacked amiibo'd their favourite villages into ACNH, like i felt you were missing the whole point but when you think it through i can't deny they didn't have their own fun with the game

or maybe i just can't understand people who don't enjoy hating rude villagers for weeks on end until they finally move out

Honestly, when it comes to cheat programs or devices, I look only to cut down on the grind. A battle system can be fun, or the exploration can be so nice, but if I have to repeat it so many times that it takes over 80 hours to complete a game otherwise designed to take less than 15, there is a problem. So I'll gladly cut 80-120 hours to 30-33 when trying to complete a good game hindered by the grind.

That's not depriving myself of a good experience. It's optimizing my own time and my own experience with that game.

Look at the first Dragon Warrior. With max level, best gear, and all spells, the full game takes about 50 minutes. Starting from scratch without cheats? It takes far, far longer than that. Also, fun fact: carrying the princess on your whole adventure, in your arms, takes less space in your inventory than her "love." But I digress.

A good game gives you hours of entertainment relative to the money you put in. Compare to the cost of a movie ticket--well, the cost of an evening matinee in the 90s at least--and do the math; dollar to dollar, hours to hours. If a cheat cuts the fat and lets me get my money's worth, then I'll allow it.

Things like infinite health, MP, or resources? Probably not so much, unless it's like a third or fourth file and I'm interested to see if I can break the game by being too powerful at all times. Then I might have a laugh and move on with my life. Like a gag reel after seeing a movie a couple times.

When I was younger I played all of the early blizzard RTS games with cheats and had a ton of fun. I doubt I would have stuck with warcraft 1 and experienced the whole story had I tried playing it legitimately.

I remember this. And then I remember this funny little site coming along with a cheat section for each game, but then people flooded those sections with mini-guides for how to unlock well-known features for the games, and not actual, you know, cheats. Whatever happened to that site? I hear its forums have been a lot of trouble for everyone involved...

TC isn't 100% off the mark here, sometimes people do things they think they'll enjoy that will be bad for them in the long run.

I was playing a game called Grim Dawn that I was some what enjoying, then someone showed me this tool that lets you get any item in the game and set your level to whatever you wanted. I used it, and was immediately bored with the game and never finished it.

But in some games it is a benefit. Like I'm sure a lot of people genuinely enjoy playing The Sims and just giving themselves infinite money, even though that is technically a cheat.

I look at it more or less the same way I look at difficulty options in games. We know how the creator wanted the game to be played and what they wanted the experience to be like, but no one is under any obligation to experience it that way.

Another analogy I've used before is food. A restaurant that I once went to had a limited time spicy burger; I liked everything on it except for the jalapeos - the thing that made it spicy - since I don't like spicy food. If I order that sandwich without the jalapeos I'm well within my right to, and I'm not robbing myself of any experience, since I didn't necessarily want that exact experience in the first place.

I still have a cheat code book from when Pokmon Ruby came out! I also use cheats so I don't have to grind for hours. Single player games you're using cheats for? if you're enjoying it, fine. Multi-player games you're using cheats/mods for? shame on you.

Most single player games have some kind of grind to deal with. On my first playthrough, I'll give that grind a chance because sometimes it's fun. But I'm not sitting there battling a billion trash enemies for upgrades/money/exp in any games anymore, especially on a second playthrough. If it's an item with a 1/128 chance of dropping from some rare enemy, it's an item that has a 100% chance of appearing in my inventory through the magic of cheats because I'm not spending a whole afternoon doing that nonsense.

I created this thread because apparently there is a discord bot for only the switch version of BN6 which will trade you any chip you want. Buster Max I wouldn't consider cheating, but this shit I would find absolutely absurd.
I love Battle Network, but loathe BN6 and the community around it.

Anything played on PC is incredibly easy to cheat with hex editors, at least. Some cheat tables are basically sorcery with what they can accomplish.

100% this. Yes, sometimes cheating can ruin your fun in ways that you don't necessarily anticipate, but other times it enhances the fun, and you really can't make any sort of blanket statements about it. Just let people enjoy things.
