People who don't are weird. All over the country politicians are trying to control what books are in the library, what subjects you can take in college, what medical procedures you are allowed to access etc. There are a lot of major decisions that will impact millions of people.

I lean left. I used to lean a lot further left, but I feel like the new "further leaning left" is leaning a lot further left than I think is reasonable. Neither "side" is willing to compromise anymore, so much so that people flat out say there is no compromising with the other side. So either nothing is going to get done, or the only things that will get done are the things that each side can cram through while they have power, and before the opposite side retracts as much as they can upon taking power back.

People who see all the bullshit happening in this country every day and don't want to do anything about it are pretty weird. Seriously, you see all this deranged behavior coming from exactly one side, and it doesn't cross your mind that something is insanely fucked up and wrong here?

If I talk to someone from each side, they'll tell me its the other side. And its funny, because both sides will tell me the other side is trying to do the same thing (they are trying to ban things, cancel people, control people, etc.).

A sizable chunk of that is because "compromise" means "okay we'll only kill half of the trans people" in many of the more prominent political discussions in today's America. Being only half of a genocidal maniac isn't "compromise."

And that's the issue.
Look at the debt ceiling. One side is asking for a little, leaving a lot of room, and the other side wants a lot, while only giving up a little room.
One side seems to typically budge more and that makes it a catch 22 thing making them look weak.

It's weird hearing people being called far left when we haven't really seen that in American politics much. Most left leaning are much closer to the middle than the far right by a long shot. America feels much closer to falling extremely conservative than it does going full blown socialist.

Indeed. "Far left" in American politics mostly means "maybe we should increase minimum wage and feed some poor people."

Which side is "actually" doing those things? The right tells me it is the left. The left tells me it is the right.

The left says the right is, among other things, banning books, and yeah, the right does actually seem to be doing that. Why? They'll tell you it is to protect kids.

Meanwhile, the right says the left is, among other things, pushing for schools to keep secrets from parents about their children, and yeah, the left does actually seem to be doing that. Why? They'll tell you it is to protect kids.

Now both sides will look at that statement and say "No, but we're REALLY protecting kids."

Probably referring to not disclosing to parents if their kids are lgbt. To protect kids from the tortures such as conversion therapy camps. The kids are stuck with the parents until they are 18. And some of these nutjobs advocate violence against lgbt people. So yes, it is potentially protecting kids.

The difference, however, is that banning books to protect kids has little to no basis in anything other than a misinformed moral panic spurred on by pundits that exaggerate reality to feed the algorithms that pay them and will therefore almost certainly cause substantially more harm than good, while forcing schools to tell parents about gender non-confirming behaviour against the kids' wishes is a well-documented risk factor for those kids having the shit beaten out of them. That's only "the same" if you take everything you're reading at its most basic face value interpretation and do nothing to actually consider it or research the empirical reality of the matter. There is a single reality. Conflicting opinions on what that reality is are not made equally valid by the mere basis of being "just opinions."

Now, what you can say is that everyone believes they're doing what's best. There's some merit in that mindset, and it's good to keep that in mind when discussing such matters, but if you're presented with evidence that what you believe is best is actually quite harmful, and you still refuse to adjust your beliefs and actions accordingly, you stop being able to hide behind those good intentions because you've made it clear that you're more interested in being right than doing right. If you can't defend your belief that something is best (and especially if you can't refute evidence to the contrary), you shouldn't believe that it's best.

That sounds like a consequence of the right wings to me. Like, is that bad or political to keep your kid from forced therapy or violence? Again, sounds like the consequence of politics.
I guess what I'm getting at, is i am left wing cause i see absolutely nothing wrong with what you said. It's unfortunate you can't be yourself when it causes no harm just cause someone disagrees with it.

Leftists aren't keeping secrets from kids. The right says "leftists" are advocating for schools to keep secrets from parents, and to actively lie to parents about their children. Even if it is being done with good intention, it doesn't negate the fact that the people on the right say the left is doing it, and it is in fact being done.

Have you considered that the people complaining about schools keeping secrets from parents would generally prefer to see every trans person on the planet eradicated before choosing to present the issue in such a "neutral" manner?

The fact that it's done with good intention (and specifically, with good intentions that are well-supported by empirical data and can therefore be expected to yield positive results) doesn't negate the fact that it's happening, but it does mean that it happening isn't actually a bad thing and that complaining about it is stupid at best and outright malicious in many other cases.
