I want the things I like to be popular. If so, then that means I get to talk about it with more people, and the industry will also be inclined to make more things like it. I wouldn't have gotten more Souls games if people weren't as receptive to Demon's Souls as I was.

So, Tetris. I visited my cousins many years ago for some reason I don't remember, but I do remember my Uncle Dave spent a LOT of time playing Tetris on the NES. This was back when video games were just toys for kids and only nerds played them. He played the absolute hell out of it.

Meh ok list. Sure Im a very oldschool gamer but these type of lists needs more Sega games, especially classic Sonic and Streets of Rage 2.

It's basically a point and click visual novel with some RPG elements

I've only played a little of it so far but it's pretty intense

I'm not even the biggest fan of Disco Elysium personally but I think of all games in the last five years it is the most likely to stick around on future top 100's, it's very unique and well-made

Oh give me a break. If this aggregate list of peoples' favorite games matched mine completely it'd just be fucking weird. Though I didn't mean to say it like ANY year in which my GOTY matches is bad - I think BOTW is also my favorite game of 2017. It's not weird that it happens sometimes, but if it happened every year I'd feel like I wasn't cultivating my own interests very well. Like, I'm not sitting here fuming over the fact that everyone likes TLOU and I don't - who gives a shit?

Like, sure, I like when games I like are also liked by other people, but I think it'd be much more strange if my tastes DIDN'T diverge in some way from the most mainstream possible opinion than if they did.

I think it's pretty useful actually? I like seeing aggregate snapshots of what games people consider to be the greatest of all time. If I wanted to see a unique list of someone's favorite games I'd just ask literally anyone on board 8, I know you fuckers got opinions.

The list is boring because "greatest of all time" isn't a phrase that gives a shit about interesting individual opinions, it's going to be something that's forged by consensus, so of course the list looks like consensus.

Mass Effect 2 isnt even the best Mass Effect.

And The Last of Us about 97 too high

Given that this is a consensus list from across the industry it being generic in some ways actually makes it more useful. The reason Fallout 3 is above New Vegas despite vocal online fandom having declared New Vegas significantly better is the same reason that Fallout 3 is stronger than New Vegas in contests on here - there are a lot of people who prefer Fallout 3 to New Vegas, including people who play a lot of games. They just arent usually talking about it on the internet.

The most notable case I think is Bioshock Infinite. The narrative on that game turned hard about a year after it came out. However a lot of people still really like that game. You could also see this in GOTD2 when it overperformed against Arkham City. For me I am somewhere in the middle on it. While on reflection I share all the criticisms in the moment I played it it was an unforgettable experience. That does stay even though I doubt Ill ever replay it.

From an objective standpoint, saying MGS2 is one of the best games ever made is like saying The Last Jedi is one of the best movies ever made...but then again, there IS The Last of Us Part II high up on this list. However, I rarely ever see TLJ on "best of" lists, or at least not to the same extent as TLOU2, so maybe the MGS2 comparison is more apt.

Also, since I can't post in the stats topic, I would like to say that TLJ is more comparable to Metroid Fusion than Other M IMO.

I found it to be very overrated. Memorable in its own way, but I wouldn't call it amazing.

that's kind of insane that some of those games only received a single vote out of hundreds of people. thinking mainly of rayman legends and ghost trick here which would not be out of place in anyone's top 10 games list

Ghost Trick only getting one vote isn't surprising considering it has a low play rate even here, and this is one of the places where it'd be most popular.

Don't know what to think about the only person giving Ghost Trick a vote being the same person who calls Dragon Age 2 one of the 10 best games ever.

The idea that people may one day try and pretend that DA2 was actually good and just misunderstood haunts me.

It's great to get one as a snapshot in time for what "we" think is the standard canon in 2023. I wish gaming has an equivalent to the Sight and Sound and do something like this periodically to see how the entries change over time.

The only Splinter Cell from the original XBox that I remember the plot of was Pandora Tomorrow. I remember that the original had a couple of DLC missions including one where you kill a minor villain from the main game, and I remember that Chaos Theory did away with "three alarms and game over". Pandora Tomorrow stuck with me because the subtitle meant something connected to the plot.

Dude whaaat? Chaos Theory is probably the best stealth game of all time! Plus it had the best version of the Spies Vs Mercs multiplayer!

Yeah, I'll admit I might have jumped the gun on that one. The issue mainly being both being controversial for their "post-modern" narratives and Rey reminding me of Raiden so much. Disclaimer though: subjectively I like MGS2 way more than TLJ, because I'm more into MGS than Star Wars in general, and I think Raiden is a way better character than Rey but that's neither here nor there.

What exactly is post modern about the last Jedi? Subversion does not equal post modern

I mostly found the comp weird because MGS2 is wildly loved by the fans (just maybe not as much as 1 and 3) and the entire trilogy is beloved and considered to be one of the best series of all time. It wouldnt be weird at all to see MGS2 on a top 100 games of all time list. It might not be common but it wouldnt be out of place.

the sequel SW trilogy isnt thought of in anywhere near the same way and the best movie of the three (by what most would say) is basically just a rehash of a new hope and completely unoriginal. Any of these three movies ending up on a top 100 movies of all time list would be hella weird
