I think there's something in an mgs2/tlj comparison strictly based solely on original reactions. MGS2 got a lot of backlash upon release

A comparison these days is silly because MGS2 is mostly loved, has mostly aged well, and its detractors aren't as vocal.

MGS is not a trilogy.

Worst online gaming forum trend is people taking three entries randomly from a series and saying what a great trilogy.

MGS2 is a weird one anyway as it was extremely well received on release then it got backlash, and now people mostly love it again.

Edit: Also I think outside of online nerd spaces, generally most would say TLJ is the best of the sequels. Comparing a top 100 films list to a top 100 games list is silly though because there have been far more major films than games.

There are only three metal gear solid games I will hear nothing to the contrary

MG1, MG2, MGS1 are a trilogy

MGS2, 3, 4 are another trilogy

The only three MGS games, MGS3, Peace Walker, and MGSV (ignore that MGSV is two games).

You have the Solid Snake trilogy (1, 2, 4) and the Big Boss trilogy (3, PW, V)

This makes a bit more sense (aside from the fact that the Big Boss trilogy is four games) but the reality is its all one story, they gave MGS3 the 3 for a reason.

Even Kojima doesn't count Portable Ops

And you can buy MGSV as one game now so you can count it as one...!

The important (not actually important) distinction is is it one purchase with two launchers or a single launcher?

Interestingly Portable Ops is canon, but largely in dont worry about it territory.

Imagine if the Internet was such a big thing during the days of MGS2, Wind Waker, Metroid Fusion, and Super Mario Sunshine. TBH I don't even think The Last of Us Part II is as notoriously contentious as TLJ.

For what it's worth, I remember at least one ranking of the best sci-fi movies of the 2010s that had both TFA and TLJ in the top 15. I think TLJ was ranked above stuff like Inception on that list.
