A sort of surprising number of people I know with southern accents seem to think that everyone around them really likes their accent.

This got me interested in the idea so I've asked a few people without southern accents and every one of them has had a pretty negative response. Like 12 for 12.

Is this really a thing? To me it's just an accent, and says absolutely nothing about your personality.

I know I'm ruining it this time when I say it but I do think that you are the most consistently funny poster on this board, for whatever that's worth.

That depends, do they sound like trailer trash or a southern Belle? It's like asking about English accents, sure cockney sounds trashy but not the proper english

Depends on who has it, and how it sounds

wouldnt say charming, but I do enjoy hearing it!!

I think it sounds really nice, but I also associate it with some negative stereotypes.

If I was black I wouldn't want to live in that area. I wonder if foreigners understand that southern Americans are an entirely different culture.

There are so many different southern accents though. I'm southern and I have a definite accent. I wouldn't define it as the charming deep south. That sounds just as odd to me as someone from way north. Not bad, I don't hate any accent ( I find them fun and interesting), just definitely not my way of pronouncing words.

I'll be honest I associate it with treason

I like it on girls with slightly higher pitched voices. Think the country song we should be friends.

I used to work with a girl that was plain as hell but her voice would drive me crazy.

My ex used to have this Irish girl character named Adaline that he would do when we were playing Monster of the Week. It was simultaneously funny, adorable, and strange because he does a very passable girl voice

There's like a dozen different "southern" accents. Saying there's a "southern" accent is like saying there's a "British" accent.

There totally is though. There is an underlying accent underneath all southern accents and funny enough it's relatively similar to the one behind all British ones, but we all know you just wanted to sound smart. I'm dumb and even I can see that.

I'm sorry, but no. I find most of them very grating. Except Louisiana/Cajun.

I have family in the South so to me I never paid attention to it much but the deeper south you go the more noticeable it can be.

If a person is charming, an accent can add to the charm

Arkansas has a good one. Alabama and Mississippi are awful

Not sure charming is the right word but I don't hate the accent.

You're British right? Do you hear the similarity between the southern accent and your own? Actors say it is there, but I absolutely do not hear it.

It absolutely isn't there. Hell my accent(Yorkshire) is totally different to someone from London for example so it figures American accents will be different to both too. We in England don't just have one accent and it gets even more fun when you include Scotland and Wales (Britain).

You all do have an underlying accent. Sure they're all different the same way that southern accents are all different, but southern accents all have that sort of twangieness to them the same way that a yorkshire and cockney accent both sound... I donno. Bouncy.

I'm arguing with southern people over their accents too apparently, and I did that first, so this should hardly come as a surprise. I dont need to be a mechanic to know that honda and acura share a manufacturer, and I dont need to be British to know that British people share an underlying accent.

its hard to find a word to describe an accent. its rare that a single word can do it like "twangy" with the southern accent (which is somehow perfect)

I dont know the word for the British one, but it feels very round and light to me. and balls bounce and are round, so thats why I think my brain says "bouncy"

Dont get me wrong, they sound distinctly different and all, but there is something behind all of them that makes you know instantly they are at least closely related accents.

hey Ill give you the scottish at least, but welsh absolutely does sound very similar to English to me

also, I've been using british, english and UK all interchangeably because i cannot be arsed to figure out the rubix cube that is your naming conventions.

i have an accent myself and apparently it's pretty strong when I talk online in VC but it's relatively tame for around here

also best accent of all is kansai-ben sorry
