After purchasing my Double Down last week I'm now in the Diablo IV zone

well I have it downloaded at least, but servers don't open until tomorrow

It's 82 GB on PC and 76 GB on PS5 if you're looking at space requirements. Not sure about other platforms and frankly I don't care~!

It's just Act 1 and has a level cap of 25 I believe. If you get to level 20 though you get a wolf puppy backpack!

They picked a questionable weekend to do this, considering it's also the Steam sales.

I suspect I'll pick this up when it's live anyway, so I'd rather just enjoy it in the moment when I begin playing then. I will certainly follow this thread to hear everyone's impressions, though.

Was going to hold off until the full release, but dog backpack won me over.

Also I can finally listen to my favorite album again soon! Became obsessed with Daft Punk's Discovery back when Diablo 2 first was out to the point that it was pretty much the soundtrack to Diablo for me.
When D4 was announced decided not to listen to the album again until it was out to make it as fresh sounding as possible while I loop it endlessly on my playthrough

Almost went rogue but ended up gong sorceress. Pretty fun so far, the dodge mechanic seems like it'll be fun on a rogue.

Yikes! Guess I'll play a bit more before logging.

Most devastating thing so far, you can't teleport in town :(

I was in the queue for 80 minutes then my game crashed after killing the first 2 enemies and I'm back in the queue for 80 minutes. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow but I think I need a better PC.

And finally hit a crash at level 13, ~45 min login queue.

Pretty fun so far, tried out most of the early sorc skills and most are decently satisfying to use. Really like that reskilling is cheap and easy to do, being able to undo particular skills is a nice touch.

Multiplayer opens up once you reach the first major town. Other players are just doing their own thing, but if you're both on the same quest you end up working together naturally as you walk towards your objective.

Seems like everyone's loot is independent so whatever drops is exclusive to you and they can't see it

if any of this was in Diablo 3 I only played that game once a decade ago and remember almost nothing from it so I apologize.

also the entire map just being one interconnected sandbox is really cool and different from what I'm used to in Diablo 2

not sure if this map is just act 1 though or if it's the entire game because it seems REALLY BIG just to be Act 1

I've played a little.

My biggest expectation is that they wouldn't really know how to innovate and carry forward the two biggest and most important systems for games like this, skills and loot, and instead just lean on basic ideas in the past that worked and that'll cause the game overall to just putter out in the long term. The items do seem like they could be cool, but can't really tell how it will workout in endgame yet. Skill tree looks cool but I'm super skeptical this will actually be that interesting in the long run - I'm 100% expecting its just going to be "pick your 6 skills and then take the nodes next to them that make them good) which isn't going to be much of an improvement over D3.

But what I expected this game to excel was the polish on actual combat. As much of a mess Diablo 3 turned out system wise, it WAS just a blast at actually playing your character and blowing shit up. The skills all just felt great and satisfying to use. Every now and again I roll up a new Diablo 3 season just to get that feeling, because it's great.

It's a bit hard to tell how this will develop with higher level skills, but D4 feels really slow and clunky right now. I made a rogue and i spent so long just doing straightforward shooting an arrow or throwing a dagger 100x at enemies, or just doing a normal melee attack. When I started to unlock skills, I've only gotten some basic utility like a smoke bomb or a dash, so it hasn't improved much.

It's possible this will improve as the game progresses and more stuff is unlocked but it feels like it should be better at this stage. As someone who just spent last year playing Lost Ark, which has 10+ classes which have great class fantasy and it feels smooth and active to play - Diablo 4 has a LOT of ground to cover to come anywhere near how good combat should feel today. I've quit Lost Ark because of how bad the Korean MMO systems are but playing D4 just makes me want to go play my Soulfist and spiritbomb some mother fuckers.

I rolled a Sorceror briefly just to see if it is different and it actually does feel a bit better than the rogue with these spells, but not that much better. I'm prob not gonna play much this weekend, might try again with my favoured Necromancer next weekend to go a little harder and see how it goes further in the skill tree and with some legendaries.

Anybody know much about Last Epoch? I see it on Maxroll as another ARPG that's up and coming - apparently it's been early access and may or may not be moving towards full release soon? Wonder if it's worth checking out at all.

Did not kill the world event boss, we got it down to like 30% health by the time 15 minutes was up

saw a streamer beat it and they got like 8 legendaries out of it

I got to level 20.

I played barb, it was fairly sluggish and I have a bunch of complaints but I'm going to hope that it's just "early game Diablo" problems. It's a shame that they've never made the early game feel particularly fun.

The dodge has potential, hopefully this isn't the final version of the mechanic.

My skill cooldowns were way too long.
Enemies had way, way too much CC. This was probably my biggest takeaway from the demo. way too much time spent in CC or waiting for cooldowns. I think there's a lot of balance and design that is heavily focused on being in a group.

I did enjoy the game a bit, it's Diablo. I just hope I don't have to be in a group to enjoy the meatier content. Or they add a mechanic to make it easier/incentivized to have someone join me in a dungeon (beyond begging in chat).

anyway looking forward to doggo backpack

Reached 20 on the sorc and probably calling it quits for now, having a lot of fun with it but figure I'll save it for June.

Misc overall thoughts:
-Attack animations and their sounds are fantastic for the sorc. The sounds of the attacks in particular are like New World gathering sounds quality.

-Really enjoyed the new dodge mechanic, using that with teleporting every ~9 seconds made battles feel fun and more engaging than older Diablo games.
I noticed I got a second dodge charge later on but not sure if it was from equipment, leveling, or something else. Excited to see how many you end up with by end game.

-Boss battles felt less like just a direct gear check and more like an actual fun segment with a bit more learning quick patterns. Also really like the mechanic of the boss dropping a few potions for every large chunk of their health that you take off, lets you heal up quite a bit through the fight.

-Character creation is far better than previous Diablo games but still at about a mid 2000s MMO level. Pick a face, hair, hair color, skin color, tattoos, jewelry. Not a big issue I guess considering your character is usually decked out in gear and 2 inches tall.

-Came across a few legendary drops that felt pretty impactful and one that gave a skill perk that made me switch my build up. Felt like a pretty healthy drop rate.
Will be interesting to see how much variety ends up getting added to skills through gear.

-Love the skill/upgrade flexibility, being able to easily and instantly change up your build because of a new drop is great.

-Story seems interesting by Diablo standards.

-Open world aspect feels like it fits Diablo pretty well, going to really appreciate getting a mount though. Especially because I kept forgetting to activate the town portals...

Overall I went from I'll play it to being pretty excited about it.

once you clear out Kor Dragan there's a level 30 event that can spawn there for even better gear than your level limit

anyway Diablo IV beta completed. Took about 12 hours to play through Act 1 and most of the side content. Had a lot of fun playing as the Rogue which was basically a fusion of both the Amazon and Assassin from Diablo II where you can get in close with daggers or attack from afar with bow and arrow while dodging and throwing down traps and bombs.

Enjoyed the feel of the combat and the flexibility of the skill trees, but not sure yet if I like that enemies scale with your level because I always enjoyed grinding for stupidly powerful gear and annihilating enemies in weaker areas.

Loot seemed to be overly generous with a lot of Rares or better and the modifiers seem more like a mix of D2 and D3 since +skill abilities are back in.

Biggest upgrade for me is how now the game is not really separated into different areas for each Act. Now it's just one big interconnected map that you'll be traversing through. Makes sense now why they added horse travel to the game
