Right wingers picked up the word likely during the summer of the 2020(?) riots. Then ran with it as their new buzzword that replaced "SJW" and "being political." The group that mostly clings to the word is right wingers. Personally I think we should stick with making fun of the GOP calling everything under the sun to describe everything they don't like as "woke." That and IIRC using what they acknowledged as the definition of woke (I think it was DeSantis's team) against themselves.
