Saw the chronicles on sale and was considering getting it but realized this board doesnt give much buzz about these games compared to previous games

What did you all think about them compared to previous games? Just so I know what I would be getting myself into

GAA1 is pretty bad overall, and I only think it's better than AJ of all Ace Attorney games. However, it's extremely necessary to play for GAA2, which is one of the best games in the series, up there with T&T/SoJ.

Very good as a duology, the first game doesn't really stand well on its own, so don't give up on the second if you're not a fan.

fantastic games

GAA2 might actually be the second best one in the series.
I think GAA1 is still pretty good, but like everyone is pointing out it makes more sense if you think of it as the first half of a regular AA game than its own ting.

GAA2 is really good, on par with the best in the series. GAA1 is fine, but is basically setup for GAA2.

Characters and music is all really solid for Ace Attorney too. Special attention to the camera and animations, which is the best in the series by a long shot.

GAA1 is one of my least favorite games in the series, potentially my least favorite.

GAA2 is one of the best games in the series.

You unfortunately have to play both, not really an option. Luckily, I absolutely think 2's excellence overshadows 1's mediocrity.

It's a good thing they were packaged together, because after playing GAA1, I likely would not have purchased GAA2 had I not already owned it.

I have never pondered where I would rank GAA if it was one large game like it was clearly meant to be, rather than 2 normal sized AA games.

Probably still very high. A lot of my animosity towards GAA1 is how much I hate the final case, but if it was just a middle case it wouldn't bother me as much I suppose...though I would still hate it.

I don't understand the anger towards GAA1, the 3rd and 5th cases were both great. The second one has a great 3rd case but I'm not that fond of the finale (though it does have the single best section across either game).

I feel the same. Really dislike the last 2 GAA2 cases.

G2-3 is the best case in either game

GAA1 is a lot of fun at times, but the resolutions to most of the cases can be unsatisfying, but they're also designed that way on purpose.

The games are also more fun if you've read the Sherlock Holmes stories so you can understand the references being made.

GAA1 is the worst game in the series (but not bad still!), while GAA2 is about average in the pecking order, I'd say. What hurts GAA2 the most (I feel) is that the main villains are forgettable in the final case. The final case still has some really cool stuff going on leading up to the climax (and there's a good twist), though. The second and third cases are fantastic for non-final cases, too.

one of the reasons it's painful is that these are really really long cases and yeah, GAA1's resolutions suck. if there's a flaw in GAA2 it's certainly that it buckles under the weight of the story it creates by the end.

that said the music, animations, and protagonists are top notch and the general setting is excellent

Part of the problem GAA2 has at the end is the primary villain is absurdly easy to see coming for a very long time, and it really doesn't feel like much of an accomplishment to "discover" this and take them down. I feel like they're setting this up back in the first game.

I also immediately figured out the primary reason "why" Kazuma was sent to England in case 1-3 because of how that same character talks to you the first time you meet them.

I thought of both of these as one long game, more or less and thought as a unit it was really good. I thought GAA1 was fine for what it was - it wasn't meant to be a standalone game, and works perfectly well in its place.

The first half of GAA1 is the best part, and if you left off on "case" 3 then that's the high point of the game.

Case 4 is absolutely DREADFUL, one of the worst AA cases period, so sadly would not be coming back on a high note lol.

Case 5 is a lot more mixed reception because I know some people like it a lot and others don't like it at all. Personally it cause me actual mental anguish with how much I hated it. I'm pretty sure this case was responsible for me getting literally sick IRL after playing it. I had never been more down on Ace Attorney as a franchise than when I was forcing my way through GAA1-5.

I don't get the hate for the 5th case in GAA1. It wasn't spectacular but it wasn't bad either. I don't mind Graydon as a primary villain because with him they go more "Stylish relatively affable villain" than "Evil menace that needs to be stopped" and it actually kinda works.

Perhaps the best way to describe the structure of the two games in order to set proper expectations would be this: (This is not a spoiler, just some slightly expanded insight on the story structure)

I read that Shu Takumi once said in an interview that his original vision for the first Ace Attorney game would be that the events of 1-2 would be the final case in the game and that there'd be other cases between 1-1 and 1-2. He was told he couldn't do this though because it would be too slow of a start.

Great Ace Attorney 1 is what happens when he gets his way.
