Persona 5's soundtrack is overall worse than both 3 and 4's overall soundtracks

and maybe a lukewarm take: there has never been a Persona special edition game (p3p, golden, royal) with better music than the original

Soundtracks with real instruments are worse. Especially ones with orchestras. Orchestras make everything sound blurry, vague, and weak.

Take for example, any Smash Bros Ultimate song that is a fancier real-instruments remake of a song from another game. The original game's song is better, every single time.

Another example, the original FF7 soundtrack, versus the FF7 remake. For any song that's in both games, the original PSX MIDI song is better, every single time. The fancier version is just messier and more complex for no benefit.

As a result, all soundtracks before ~2007 are better than pretty much all soundtracks after.

Orchestras are great, but I think on average vgm does a pretty poor job of showcasing orchestral music. (To be clear, it would not suprise me if this had more to do with the constraints of composing for a video game than anything)

Banjo-Kazooie doesn't have a good OST and a lot of its music sounds like circus music

Mother 1 has the best soundtrack in the series

FF12 has by far the worst soundtrack in the series, I'd take FF2's OST over it, though it's still fine for what it is. Also, FF6's soundtrack is solid as hell, but it's also definitely the weakest of the SNES trilogy. The best games in the series in terms of soundtrack are the 13 Trilogy (especially Lightning Returns) and Mystic Quest.

The Mighty Switch Force games are virt's best work and have some of the best soundtracks since the 2010s.

Think there's definitely some evidence of constraints driving creativity in VG soundtracks. But also probably influenced by the freedom composers had in older games versus more modern (big) games that are very tightly edited.

As for a hot take, how about: the lack of regular proper boss fights in most big games over the past couple of gens years has led to less stand out banger songs (in big games).

Completely disagree with this one. The best FF soundtracks, for example, are roughly X, XIII and XV.

  • Final Fantasy music hasn't been nearly as good after Nobuo Uematsu was no longer the main composer
  • games with atmospheric or "cinematic" soundtracks (western AAA games are what I'm getting at here) only work within the context of their games and are almost universally instantly forgettable
  • Mitsuo Singa is a good composer
