I have no problem with the first tweet since 90% of FF mini games are terrible and Blitzball itself is the spawn of Satan only enjoyed by serial killers. Honestly I can't even think of a mini game in any JRPG ever that I have really enjoyed. Even my favorite games have stuff locked behind having to play an awful mini game and it annoys me more than it should.

This. YoshiP's always been vocal that he makes XIV much more widely accessible than his own personal preferences because it's an MMO and those need to appeal to a very broad net. It's fine for creators to make a game they really would kill to play. If you want an example of what to expect, look at Tactics Ogre -- it's YoshiP's favorite game of all time, and notably it only contains a singular 'funny' sidequest. The others are all fairly serious in tone.

The first blitzball match is literal spawn of satan material. The CPU cheats with boosted stats for all their players. You only stand a chance of winning IF you get lucky RNG or by cheesing. The regular blitzball game is great.

To which, honestly, he has a point. Not as much nowadays, but in the late 2000s and early 2010's, mainly around the PS360 era, gaming journalism legitimately was treating Japanese games like they were lesser, and acting like it was a bad thing when a game "felt" like it came from Japan. It's something that was still going on when YoshiP started XIV.

No, I love FF14 but Yoshi-P says weird shit all the time and this is one of them. FF games - hell, AAA games and dramatic stories in general - tend to have a mix of lighthearted and dark serious elements to make the other land more. And like, the main plot of FF15 was not about the optimism of the series despite the goofy road trip elements, lmao. The final few chapters are some bleak shit. The past 10 years of FF being like this are maybe true if you only look at FF14, a very optimistic game where you do exactly this. And like, he could have just said he and his team want to make a darker game without those vibes. I get the feeling he's just trying to sell the game to people who prefer those darker elements. But I am more than fine indulging in some edgelord shit on occasion, this comment still doesn't make sense.

He's right about the JRPG thing though, I do see where he's coming from with that and honestly had no idea it was largely a distinction that was only made outside of the Japanese game community.

We haven't had a cast mainly in their teens since 12. And even then Ashe was almost 20. 4/6 of XIII's cast is over 20 (and Vanille is 19), and all four of the main crew in XV are over 20.

Honestly XV annoyed the hell out of me because the story was so close to being great but instead it was cryptic as hell because it was all based around the DLC.

XIII-2 is a top half FF entry.

But hey if XVI is a hit, then we'll probably get a XVI-2 featuring more levity. Same deal as X.

Yes, it's perfectly solid. It has none of the issues from 13 and 13-2 that require fan patching to fix IIRC.

Lightning Returns is probably my fav entry in that trilogy! It's not perfect but battling is fun and the 13-day system works surprisingly well, I think it's generally a satisfying finale to that world.

Yep, that was pretty disappointing but still wasn't out of nowhere because there's been similar criticism about 14 as well with mildly dismissive responses (though it's more of a mixed bag there). I think generally he's been given a pass because of his games and honestly being a genuinely likeable weird guy, but that cuts both ways and he has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth more than you might expect, if all you know about him is his acclaim.

The racial diversity thing was a rare Yoshida miss.

It doesn't give off the air of actual bias though, just misunderstanding the situation. It is another result of him sticking with his vision no matter what.

Which, you know, you can't really blame him when it hasn't failed him so far. The man rebuilt a dying nightmare game into one of the most well received entries in a 30 year old franchise, and did so in record time while STILL updating and trying to keep that nightmare version running at the same time!

If a setting is based on a particular culture it doesn't have to be that diverse.

Not sure about something like ff14 though.

Granted they would probably never make a game based on Africa or India or SE asia and have the whole cast be dark skinned...

I absolutely can blame him for it lol. Unintentional or not, it's clear bias and just because I like the man's games I don't have to defend every single thing he says. I'm more than capable of respecting his creative talent while criticizing the bad parts.

Let me offer a lighter example: Hideo Kojima is a genius game designer but "you will feel ashamed of your words and deeds" is one of the most hilariously stupid things ever said about a video game, also in response to criticism he got. Just because I continue to love his games doesn't mean I gotta hand it to him for that one!

Looks good. Not a big Devil May Cry fan but the combat also looks a little God of War/Ragnarocky. I'm ok with that type of game play but not what I want out of a Final fantasy game.

Hopefully 17 will go back to its roots a bit more.
What I wouldn't do for a new amazing story with a job class system that is a complete rip off of ff5 or tactics.
