Board 8 > Which Final Fantasy game has the best OST?

With Theatrhythm Final Bar Line now out (which is not an eligible answer), I figure this is a great time to present this question for not the first time and certainly not the last. For the purposes of this topic, FFXIV : A Realm Reborn and all its expansions are considered separate from each other.

I'll always have nostalgia for X, but IX slaps pretty hard as well.

Hard toss-up between FFX and FFVII. I will say XV's is underrated though.

9, easily.

FFX has very few bad songs in its lineup, so it might be the deepest from top to bottom. VIII and IX have some great heavy hitters though.

An impossible decision, but if forced to choose I would choose VI.

VIII and X have legitimate claims as well.

The only wrong answer is X-2

X benefits from having the 3 different composers working on it, so many memorable tracks. I do feel like I need to ding it because the remastered soundtrack makes several tracks actively worse (FAR worse in the case of "Challenge", how do you rip out the best part of the original, damn it)

I was literally going to make the same post as Snake, that it's between VII and X and I do also think, much like the game itself, the XV OST doesn't get as much credit as it probably should, I remember it being pretty strong on its atmospheric pieces but especially strong on its battle themes. Need to replay it, maybe before XVI comes out...

I tend to focus on battle themes and similar tracks. In that lens, my preference is for VIII.

The vibe of FFX-2 is indeed a little off-putting and for canonical purposes I wish the game didn't exist (though I did kinda dig the overall atmosphere of Spira post-Sin), but I don't think the OST is bad at all. Memory of Waves and Light is one of my favorite tracks in the entire series and may be better than Zanarkand on it's best day in my eyes!

X-2 was definitely bad when played on Theatrhythm. When I played the game, I generally liked the music, though.

X-2 has some of the best songs (Gagazet, Zanarkand Ruins) and the worst songs (no^1000, Yuripa)

YRP in position. That soundtrack is not that bad.

But I'd say VIII and XIII are both up there for best.

Ugh, doing me a dirty by making me choose. Obviously my biased ass is going for XIV.

Separating by era:

3, 5, 9, X, XIII-2.

5>X>XIII-2>X>9>3

Then we have the XIV mire. ARR and 1.0 are right out, HW has sick industrial, gothic, and D&B, but some weak dungeon themes. Stormblood has a lot of awesome fight songs and oriental vibes but the overarching Measure of his Reach motif ain't a favorite when it focuses on Ala Mhigo. Shadowbringers was called Shadowbangers for a while, with even the weakest area theme (Kholusia) being above average. Endwalker tickles my grunge fancy but also has wistful opera, metal, and visual novel piano plus some of the best dungeon themes in the game, and a good play on Answers. Fuck Labyrinthos and Asphodelos, though, and fuck the final zone for making me cry at 6 in the morning.

XIV: ShB>EW=StB>HW>ARR>1.0

VIII is my gut answer, X probs second.

FFV is probably the OST that doesn't get enough credit

XV's is really good too though

I would say X, then XV and XIII. Bros on the Road is god tier

The one good thing I can say about IX is that it has pretty good music

i think the last 2 raid songs give endwalker the edge imo

IX is my favorite. V is probably number two.

I've also come to like Type-0's OST but I've never actually played it so I don't know how well it complements the game

I haven'tplayed Crisis Core and have only heard Price of Freedom and Why so far, but those are both very strong tracks and makes me excited to unlock Crisis Core on FBL.

Id pick X, but also quite like XIII and VIII

I'd say IX, VII and VI are my favorites.

Other than the battle theme of X, I dislike most of the OST. Or at least, I really didn't enjoy almost everything that Theatrhythm had to offer in regards to it. X-2 was awful as well.

VIII, and this isn't even close. Love how haunting it is.

X is great, too. Hell, most FFs have killer soundtracks.

FFMQ > VI > the rest

However I think FFXII has a vastly underrated OST. Each track seems perfectly suited to the locale and the majority of them make for very easy listening. I sometimes just have it playing quietly in the background while I'm working

XIV wins by a landslide and it's not close

(in total and just looking at a given expac's also)

Then it's FF8, then FF6, then FF5, then FF7 I think. FF7 Remake is probably equal or better than FF8.

Very very hard to choose between IX and X.
V, VII and VIII all have killer soundtracks too though.

Memory of Lightwaves is extremely good. I also like Real Emotion obviously. But the day-to-day walk around the world/battle music is not good at all.

I'll say XIII and XIII-2. X definitely way up there however. Type-0 has some hidden gems as well for lesser mentioned ones.
