You CANNOT call something that soft to decide a Super Bowl.

Completely Agree.

And just from a neutral perspective, it completely killed the excitement of what was looking to be an exciting super bowl finish.

Except the call last year didn't exist and this one was easy to make.

That one made me mad because that one was a phantom call.

One of the dumbest things I find about sports is the expectations that rules should change based on "the moment".

It's an incomprehensible way of thinking to me.

(And oh Lord the 5 minutes of that announcer bitching despite being told by both Mike and the other announcer the call was good we'e easily the worst thing to happen to that game.)

I mean, I want the correct interpretation of the rules. The issue is that you could likely find a reason to throw a penalty on practically every single play if you wanted.

It was a ticky tack call. If you're going to call that every time, you're going to slow the speed of the game down. Which is why it shouldn't be called at all. Time to change the rules tbh.

yeah, you're acting like penalties don't have severities to them. Especially with offensive/defensive holding. What's that popular saying? "A ref could call offensive holding on a lineman on just about every play if he wanted to." We even see in games where some games they "let players get away with it" more and other games where they are calling everything a foul.

So the moment totally matters when the call is a borderline ticky-tack holding call like that.

It's more of a consistency thing. If you're gonna call something like that at the very end of the game to change the entire flow, then you should be calling it all game. It's a correct call, but the timing and inconsistency just makes it look like the refs are just choosing when they feel like calling something or not, which makes it stand out and thus people complain. Be ticky-tack all game, or don't be at all.

EDIT: Hell, I was disagreeing with people here over a game a few weeks ago because they were saying the refs made too many calls, and I was fine with it because they were pretty much consistently ticky-tack all game.

That's just it though, we'll never know. Maybe the Chiefs didn't need it. Maybe with a bit of extra time, the Eagles drive for a game tying FG or even get a touchdown. Maybe Mahomes gets the ball back after that, and Mahomes with 12 seconds left drives for a TD. We were denied the chance to find out.

Yea, my team was still going to be stuck with a minute or less to pull a hail Mary, so the game was probably sealed, but I think it's more that it killed the momentum of the game dead and felt like an unneeded nail in the coffin.

I think the call was legit as a casual fan, much as I hate to say it, but man did it sour the game. Instead of it being Mahomes pushing through an injury to win a classic, the perception will be that the refs ultimately won the game for them.

Ref interference also didn't give the Chiefs 38 points.

As long as you want to live by quantum physics, here's this: Chiefs win by 7 instead of 3 without that call.

Yes, but with that outcome, the focus would have been on the Chiefs rather than the refs.

Hell, the refs have been calling decent close calls all game, probably might have been seeing as good refs.

It was the timing and the fact that it led to a wet fart of what was going to be a classic finish that hurts.

Even though I still don't agree with the call, I think we can all agree with the old adage "never let the game be close enough to be up to the refs". It is never just one play after all that decides a game. The Eagles dominated the 1st half, but the Chiefs responded in the 2nd half, and did just enough to win the game. Penalty aside, the Eagles had their chances to win easily had they not blown their lead in the 2nd half.

I think JuJu not being able to make it to the ball makes it look more egregious, so the refs had to call it.

Any call or no-call would be huge in such a situation. I mean yeah, you could look at it as the refs helping out the Chiefs there, but if they didn't call it they would have been helping out the Eagles. Except in that case, it would be purely the refs helping them because the Chiefs did nothing wrong, whereas you can play the DB for holding. I don't think the team playing within the rules should be punished for the sake of an exciting finish, personally

I thought it was more the Chiefs turning it on, and more specifically going to the special part of the playbook. Those two plays inside the 5 yard line where they had the guy in motion toward the middle and then breaking off for easy touchdowns were plays I hadn't seen them run all year, and that was almost unstoppable.

I was trying to think of where I'd rank this Super Bowl among those I've seen, and it's probably not even top 5, which isn't a knock, but the penalty made for an anticlimactic ending and probably cost it a shot at all-time greatness.

Off the top of my head, Titans/Rams, Panthers/Patriots, Giants/Patriots 2007, Cardinals/Steelers (might still be the GOAT), Seahawks/Patriots, and Falcons/Patriots are all probably better.
