It's a reference to Genealogy chapter 10, where you have two very strong bosses hanging out in that area (albeit positioned a bit differently since this paralogue is letting you skip past them) that you have to either beat one of, bypass to seize or sacrifice somebody to (all of which make them both leave).

Shit. So earlier I tried one of those "clear 3 map" trial things at difficulty 41. I can solo 40 with Yunaka as long as I use elixirs and healing platforms. But 41? Even with max stats on nearly all my units (max on their primary offensive one plus hp and defense and resistance) and +5 emblem weapons I can't one round kill a lot of enemies. It's just a huge step up in difficulty. I can't even imagine trying to do difficulty 50 unless the next dlc waves offer some truly busted things.

That seems insane But I guess the DLC must have something good Its weird that the spike it that steep, though

I looked up the chracaters' ages. Does Japan think 30 year olds are elderly or something? Saphir is 35 and Mavier is 31, but both look late 40s at the earliest. And Vander is 45 yet he looks 65. I know they consider 25 to be the "Christmas Cake" age but this is a little ridiculous lol

Vander if 45?!

I can see Mauvier looking like that because his life has been rough but Saphir has age lines on her cheeks. I guess her hair is just naturally white. And I figured Vander to be in his 50s, I'd even accept late 40s but with how he refers to himself and stuff it's ridiculous he's so young.

Yes, yes I did. I think they knew someone would do that because when the boss's health is half gone, all the regular units in that room start to swarm you. Funny stuff

I've played tons of JRPGs. They're not usually that egregious about it. >_>

Auron from FFX is still the worst example tho. I will never accept him being 35.

I was just playing tales of the abyss a few months ago and so much of the little jokes and dialogue regarding Jade being old is silly when you realize hes only like 35 himself. Raven from Vesperia as well is only like 35 but they treat him as an old codger. Japan be wilding out

To be fair everyone else in Abyss is between like 14 and 19. But in Vesperia parts of it was that Yuri was making jabs at everyone at times because that's his personality, and Raven played it up at times to make his contributions feel much more important. "Oh, I guess this old man has to help you all out after all." And the banter between him and Patty really worked well because of him playing up being an old codger. Acting aloof all the time has its benefits. But also, you know. Plot stuff.

The thing about Vander is that the only thing that makes him look old is the hair/beard color. Like if you gave him black, brown, red, or blonde hair nobody would question his age, because outside of his hair color the actual face structure doesn't look particularly old, especially when compared to Safir.

The silly thing is that it's not like Fire Emblem is unaccustomed to having characters with white hair regardless of age. Like nobody things Henry from Awakening is old.

If they really wanted to age him they should have went with the Duessel approach and had him with a different colored hair with some grey/white streaks.

Is it normal to be overleveled for the story? I'm 3 levels higher right now and the only extra fighting I've done were Anna and Jean's paralogues and one skirmish since it gave gold. I also spread xp and levels evenly between all the units to prevent overleveling but somehow I still am.

I'm on 9. I was gonna stop spreading xp evenly once it seemed like the story was catching up to me and just focus on a handful of units but so far it hasn't.

Chapter 11 and beyond is when the game stops pulling its punches. If you're on hard, I can tell you that you will be challenged. Chapter 13 was a huge pain in the ass for me personally

In normal gameplay it only lasts one battle, but the arena is basically extending one battle until one of the units loses. Essentially, the game got stuck in a situation where Lapis couldn't do any damage to Louis, but Louis was prevented from counterattacking due to Windsweep. The battle would never end and you'd be softlocked, so I guess the game is programmed to call the battle a draw if it goes too many rounds without either unit losing. Theoretically, I guess this could happen without Windsweep too if the armored unit with high def simply had a 0% chance to land a hit.

Yeah I imagine it's mostly to stop situations where both sides can't hurt the other or can't hit the other. I never considered Windsweep because I thought Rings weren't active in the arena.

I think they're only off if you have a thing like
Louis has Marth emblem
And you fight him with Louis

Otherwise it should still work

Emblem Rings aren't. Bond Rings apparently are.

Still not very far but I gotta admit, the framme/clanne support convo is pretty good lol

I'm heading into the final chapter of the game later on today, and Framme is basically the MVP of my playthrough.

I had her inherit Canter from Sigurd early on, she also got lance proficiency out of it, and I turned her into a Griffon Knight. Plus she got some insane level-ups along the way and her stats are through the roof. She has great offenses on both the physical and (with a Flame Lance or Eirika's Wind Sword) magical side, great bulk (enhanced by Gentility from Eirika), great speed (even with heavier lances weighing her down), and she can also heal when she's not battling. It's actually insane how good she ended up for me.

Trust me, almost all of us here had something like that happen in our first playthrough with what happened in chapter 11. But at least it means a second playthrough has another way to feel different from the first because we know it's coming and can plan around it.

What emblem rings do you have equipped to your characters?

I rotate around 15 of the party members but for the longest while it's been:

Alear - 3 houses (forget what it's called but the three kids)
Alfred - Tiki
Yunaka - Leif
Boucheron - Roy
Alcryst - Lyn (I feel like out of all of them this is my favorite pairing in terms of unit + what the emblem actually provides)
Diamant - Ike
Bunet - Sigurd
Seadall - Corrin (I love the silver hair on Seadall)
Timerra - Lucina
Fogado - Eirika
Celine - Micaiah
Jean - Byleth

Clearly I didn't min - max here, I rarely even use the engage effects (I'm playing normal/casual lol) but I kind of like most of these.

Right now:
Alear - 3H
Chloe - Sigurd, more move always good on flier
Louis - Leif, basically let's him be unbreakable as a GK
Ivy - Lyn, double Bolganone is by far the most damage anyone can dish out
Boucheron - Ike, dude's HP is so massive he can have Resolve active and full Wrath while still having 40 HP. Basically an unkillable crit machine.
Citrinne - Olwen S Ring. 3 Range Auto delete is fun.
Fogado - Lucina, because between him and Boucheron that's two long bow back-ups.
Seadall - Xander S Ring, he's literally never been attack so it doesn't matter.
Framme - Byleth, she's a support bot and the one person I would never use Dance of the Goddess on.
Diamant - Tiki, makes him functionally unkillable for 3 turns when needed.
Yunaka - Corrin, for fog.

Good luck I've had 10k saved up and tried genning all the rings and reloading and trying after clearing another skirmish if I don't succeed. No luck so far in at least 20 runs. So 10k is ten 10 pulls, and 20 runs that's uh. A lot of attempts. <.<

You know, I've been thinking what the heck was up with the prologue battle? No event in the game ever mirrors it yet the last words Marth says in it are what spur Alear to recall him and summon him once more to save the fan twins. It's just one of many odd plotholes in the game.

Right now, going into the final chapter (listed in order of recruitment):

Alear = Marth (also used Corrin for a while and Roy for a bit)
Framme = Eirika (also used Sigurd for a bit before promotion)
Louis = Sigurd (also used Lucina for a bit)
Yunaka = Corrin (also used Micaiah, Lyn, and Byleth for a bit)
Alcryst = Ike (also used Lief for a bit before promotion)
Citrinne = Byleth (also used the Olwen S bond ring for a bit but the staff Byleth gives mystical units is just too fucking good)
Jade = Lucina (also used Ike for a bit)
Ivy = Micaiah (I reclassed her to Mage Knight, wouldn't use Micaiah on her if I kept her in her default class)
Kagetsu = Roy
Timerra = Lyn
Saphir = Leif
Mauvier = Celica

I didn't buy the DLC so I don't have those rings. My last 2 party members going into the final battle are Merrin, who I just never really found a decent ring for so I give her random bond rings for stats, and Veyle, who I gave the Olwen S bond ring (for Dire Thunder) that I had initially put on Citrinne. I'm still debating on whether to buy the DLC to use for future playthroughs, but I wanted my first playthrough to be without it.

Also, while making this list, I noticed that exactly half of my final party was recruited before chapter 10 and exactly half was recruited after. Considering how important chapter 10 and the cutscene between 10 and 11 is because it's essentially the "midpoint" of the story (not in terms of actual chapter count or gameplay, but in terms of story progression) it's kind of cool how it worked out that way.
