If you haven't already, get the Octogon Rod for Vivi from Esto Garza (I forget if you have access to this yet but if you don't, you will real soon).

I missed this on my first playthrough and was deeply frustrated when I realized it was the only way to get those spells.

I was extremely frustrated recently watching a streamer buy a bunch of stuff from that shop, accidentally buy a duplicate of something, not have enough money for the Octogon Rod, his mods yell at people not to backseat when they tried to alert him, and move on with the game without buying it

It's not like those are vivis best spells so it's kinda w/e to me.

They're still the top level elemental spells, so they're pretty useful for exploiting enemy weaknesses.

A Final Fantasy where you miss out on the -ga spells just wouldnt feel right. In addition to exploiting weakness, they can be more MP efficient than the most powerful stuff, so theyre still good.

crazy talk! i think quina actually has those already. i try to eat/rob when i can and i think that continent with oeilvert had the earth spell, while the bird on the northern continent had a wind spell...

the lack of offensive magic this game has been kinda surprising

FFIX has a very simple battle system, for better or worse.

It hits hard, is non-elemental and can poison, and it's relatively cheap

too brainwashed by pokemon where poison is a trash attack type

I'm bad about never using status inflicting spells in FF

i used slow a few times vs bosses but yeah that's about it

i do find it annoying that Scan doesn't seem to work on strong enemies

Scan is worthless in general

Poison got better in Gen6

i like scanning the first time i encounter an enemy, and it's useful for trying to eat them!

Mechanics
Status-inflicting Black Magic spells' success rate is based on Vivi's Level, Magic stats, and the status spell's base accuracy. Vivi can use the Focus ability to increase his Magic during that battle by 25% per use. The effect stacks up to 99 and lasts for the entire battle, even if KO'd.

chance = 40 + Vivi's level + (Magic/4) - enemy's level

Afterward, two randomly generated numbers determine if the spell will hit:
A random number 0...99 >= Chance, Vivi misses his cast
A random number 0...99 < Target's Magic Evade, the target evades

this trip did inform me to equip body temp tho

Good old "You move, you die" and "you wont move" status effects.

I usually don't bother and just use Vivi to get rid of it. Pretty sure this almost ended me once though.

Yeah, I think in most FF games, you can get away with ignoring status protection, but IX takes it seriously.

it's quite annoying that tents do not restore 100% healing or cure status effects

for that matter what does "trouble" do

I think trouble makes the targeted player share damage he takes with other players

so apparently virus means i don't gain exp - that's annoying...

I forgot IX had so many extra status effects.

unfortunately to get hit by it during the ultimate zorn/thorn battle!

You don't get EXP from bosses in IX anyway though, right?

Although if it stops you from getting AP, too, then yeah, that's unfortunate.

that sounds right about EXP, but yeah it definitely greyed them out so they (i think it was zidane and dagger) didn't earn anything.

Have you done Chocobo Hot and Cold

i've done zero related to chocobos this game

You can start in a forest between Lindblum and Gizamalukes Grotto

There's a city you can find called Daguerro that's completely optional.

Chocobo Hot and Cold gives some unique rewards if you do the whole thing. I remember it being reasonably fun too.

Don't think it's too late for coffee sidequest either but I dunno never started any of the sidequest this late. Friendly monster sidequest can be done easily now too. Have you been doing any frog catching? Stellazio quest had some nice rewards as well.

FFIX has too many sidequest tbqh.

I think one of the coffees was only available if you backtracked during Garnet's stint in Treno? Or I think there was something that was only available during that time. Something about the mayor being out of his office or something, giving access to a chest. Maybe it was one of the mini figures instead.

Think it was a minifigure...and maybe a Stallazio? Dunno, been so long.

chocobo hot & cold is insanely rewarding, pretty sure lots of the best stuff is behind that. It is too bad you'll be getting outdated stuff for a bit if you start late.
