also for a country that's really weird about sex and gender, kuja just feels like a weird expression of repressed fetishes

Well she does have a timer (10 rounds I think) and a health bar. Depletion of either ends the battle but you don't "win".....didja steal from her?

totally agreed!

they can make it hard to tell what's going on though. also i've noticed that there are definitely segments that look awesome but where it feels like you can only really walk in a line, which remind me of ffx (played a long time ago up until fighting seymour, died, and never got further)

though there was a branching cavern riiiight before i actually got into the village within the tree where i accidentally went into the village first instead of checking all the paths. hm

i haven't done any crafting yet, so i might do that soon.

this split party adventure has been great other than steiner. great pacing. the one thing i miss the most though if having a white mage in the zidane party!

there was this sand golem enemy that was pretty cool in the desert.

getting blue magic is so dang hard. i'm trying to eat, but i've only got two spells so far and they haven't proven all that useful in battle haha

Garnet gets Scan. Best ways are for you to know their health before hand, play the waiting game and tap them to death or cheese them with some shenannigan blue magic like matra magic or something.

Atm there are only 3 Blue Magic worth having right now anyways, Mighty Guard (mp is skyhigh though), White Wind and Angel's snack.

Everything else you can learn now is either too situational or just not useful yet (or at all).

matra magic missed the only time i used it which is annoying

also is it just me or do you guys also just defend most of the time with vivi/dagger? lv1 magic just doesn't seem much better than an attack. don't have the lv2s yet though i've required a staff that should start that process. and dagger has nothing to do yet if she's not cutting

I never ever ever ever defend in an FF game, I'll take a 50 HP attack over doing nothing

Also you should prioritize synthesis over regular equipment buying, what you can get there is usually superior to what you can get from a shop

Yeah I don't...really understand the question. There is undoubtedly a big jump between the tier 1>2>3 spells but just cast until you tier up. It doesn't mean the tier 1s are useless. For dagger I would just leave her on standby until someone needs healing, it sucks to get in a bind where you just defended and them someone immediately takes a big attack.

sorry, to be clear, casting spells is a lot better than attacking for vivi, i'm just extremely averse to spending MP if i don't have to, especially if vivi's magic isn't hitting any harder than anyone else's regular attack

That argument would make more sense for someone like dagger, but with vivi you basically have literally nothing else to use it on. MP for blk magic is his entire deal. Besides, if you put more damage out that reduces the amount of damage that your party will be taking due to killing the thing faster. Every bit helps. I would rather leave vivi on standby too than defend because at least then he's available for emergency potion/down duties

Yeah, there's no need to be stingy with MP. You have plenty of save points to use Tents to replenish along the way, so just make the most of what Vivi is.

good point about just standing by rather than defending, that makes sense

i'm always thinking with vivi i want to save him for a boss or whatever, but i guess i should just accept that there will almost always be a tent point before the boss?

Maybe not always literally the room before but most if not all locations have a moogle at some point on the way.

Also ethers exist, and if he hasn't yet he gets Osmose at some point which is just a 2 MP spell that lets you drain enemies' MP

All the way from FF1 through 9 in my playthroughs, this is a problem i've had in most games. If I have to spend like, 7 mp to do equal or lesser damage as a character normally attacking one target, and my character has 50-100 mp, and ethers are kinda rare, then I just don't even bother. Getting Fira which does decent damage but costs 22 mp while I only have 100 total also makes that basically unusable.

Unless I'm getting to the point that my character is clearing the entire field with a cast like that which dramatically speeds up battle time, or they have enough MP that I can spam without much fear, I'll just not bother using magic at all. They aren't contributing much and then have no resources if a situation happens where I actually want them to do something - so most of the time they just do nothing. An unfortunate position most FF games have had.

For some examples - I thought magic was garbage in FF7 generally - but Enemy Skill was super good with things like Matra Magic, Trine, and Beta sweeping fields for reasonable MP costs for when you have them. In FF6, Strago Magus's Aqua Breath was super good while regular magic was not much use until late game.

Quina's Aqua Breath is good but, but just like regular magic, the MP cost makes it a bit out of reach.

The amount of recovery items that you can either buy, steal or find in FFIX makes using MP trivial and there is no reason to not do it.

it's MP that gets me specifically in a tizzie

that said i actually haven't even used many tents since i've been relatively aggressive using potions, and the game seems to autoheal you after most boss fights or story events, of which there have been many

got several hours in today - just over 13 hours deep. the story/flow is pretty wonderful. i'm beginning to enjoy battling a little more, though it's still slow which is annoying.

two more clashes with beatrix end in nothing, but we get to play as beatrix during her inevitable (partial?) faceturn. the obviously evil queen turns out to be obviously evil after all, but the hot general gets to redeem herself. not so much the extremely scantly clad alexandrian guards under her command though. the horniness in these character designs, yeesh.

poor cleyra. awesome set, but it was of course not meant to last. like lindblum.

steiner finally waking up to what the queen was up to us highly welcome and necessary.

i like zidane quite a bit as a serviceable lead who simply doesn't spend a ton of time angsting, but he's also a little one-note around the princess - just not a fun dynamic. that said dagger herself is pretty enjoyable and i'm happy she's able to be a white mage again and hopefully finally use some summons now that we've got ramuh!

this game is communicating the awfulness of war really effectively by letting us get to see villages and meet their people before seeing them reduced to ruin and death.

seeya later quina~

i assume that ramuh's story simply had two endings, and we chose the one that showed our ideals more? surprisingly fun little minigame
