There are hardly any games that use this system anymore. Pokemon will probably be the last game ever to still have turn-based combat.

Sadly no. Games journalism has been doing a hate parade against turn based combat ever since GTA: San Andreas and Halo 2.

It will probably get to a point it's barely recognizable compared to classic turn based games but I feel as long as pokemon exists it will have a place.

Yakuza Like a Dragon just had a lot of fun with turn-based.

Dragon Quest gave a couple of signals that they might be moving away, but I think what will happen is that their combat will LOOK more active (people hopping around and slashing/defending) while turn-based commands are still being entered and making the difference between victory and defeat. Remake had a good hybrid system that leaned towards turn-based: it felt active, but really the ATB commands were controlling the battle.

Hybrid systems like that are the future of turn-based in big releases, I think, but the simple old turn-based will still exist elsewhere.

Major AAA titles have mostly moved away from it (Pokemon aside), but that's mostly because it doesn't really lend itself to the cinematic spectacles a lot of them want to be. AAA publishers are still publishing smaller turn-based games, and the indie market is full of them.

I think they'd let dragon quest die before that. Final Fantasy has become their action combat series. As I saw in another thread they keep dragon quest traditional while final fantasy has always been their line of games to adapt/evolve with modern times

Agreed, and I don't think it will ever happen. They'll let it modernize to the extent that it will LOOK more like a real battle, I think, but it will be turn-based.

They tried to do that to an extent with 11 as you could wander around the battlefield, but that didn't make it look any more like a real battle and was rather awkward.

I think that few of them become big super popular games anymore.

Like octopath was the first time in a long time I remember seeing a turn based game so hyped and talked about outside pokemon

I think that's just because they don't have 200 million dollar marketing budgets.

I think it's because most people want a visual spectale that turn based usually doesn't provide. At this point pokemon is only popular cause it's pokemon

No definitely not.
All the most popular games are not visual spectacles. The only games that are are the ones pushed by AAA developers and by their marketing departments so they make good trailers.

People were saying that? I know some people liked it. But I know a ton of people who were saying they wanted regular Pokmon battles for Scarlet and Violet. And the spin-offs could keep using the other way

visual pleasing?

I mean trailers.
And turn based games make great trailers, since they contain long ridiculous animations that can be clipped into trailers that hide all the turn based bits.
I recall Xcom 2 did exactly that with their trailer, watching the first one you wouldn't know it was turn based.

But moving past trailers. Turn based nearly always produces flashier effects because again time stops during these effects. In FF7 they blow holes in the planet, blow up a star. In LoD your thrown into space and dropped on the planet. Going more recent (and funny) Neptune teams up and literally blows up the planet, then says "don't worry, this is just an animation".

No, turn based is significantly flashier than action. Action combat like elden ring is slow and boring and dark and dull in comparison.

It's more visually pleasing cause it looks more like a real fight and not people taking turns to whack each other over the head.

It doesn't matter.
It was basically an open world action RPG by today's standards.
Also it sold poorly despite (worse than LGPE) every games journalist claiming it was the best shit since sliced bread.

Cinematic stuff like that tends not to be as satisfying as something that actually lines up with what you're doing, though. It's cool to watch, but you're basically just pushing play on a short movie when you trigger attacks like that, which doesn't give as much sense of actually being involved in the battle. It can also get really repetitive when they're animations that happen frequently, hence animations usually get turned off or skipped for games like Disgaea where you're using these 30-second animations literally thousands of times.

Zacek posted...

Not really. That may be the end of Squenix trying to make it work (though it's not like the recent turn-based games they've made haven't done decently well, like Bravely Default outright surprising them with its reception), but as I and others have pointed out, Squenix is not the only game in town. So long as there's a demand for turn-based games (and there always will be), somebody will keep making them, even if that somebody isn't a leading AAA publisher.

That's how I feel playing those Batman games.
And those Asscreed games.
Actually pretty much all of them, the input doesn't match the output. Press button awesome happens is boring lol
