He was complaining about bedsores when this first started. Then I kept telling him he needs to see a doctor because of them and his response was that he didnt have them.

Yeah, hes got a couple. Pretty big ones too I think but I dont entirely know. They look big.

My dad has an infection in his gut (unsurprising), and high blood pressure. Apparently he skipped a lot of his cancer treatment appointments so they dont even know what the status of the disease was (well the specific doctor I talked to today). He told me and others he was in remission.

So theyre talking palliative care, or possible cancer treatments. But hes leaving it to me to talk to the doctors. Which I will when I go to see him in a little bit.

I also just found out that my grandfather (maternal), whom in named after, is also there and in hospice.

He got Covid last month, had a 10 day isolation, took a downturn, and put him in another 10 day isolation, but hes not getting better. So its looking like his time is going to be short too.

At least its the same hospital...

Terminal clean means the cleaning tech(s) have to suit up in full protective gear and clean the room top to bottom as if everythings contaminated with a highly infectious disease. Theyre done for covid, c diff, measles, and tuberculosis type diseases.

Its done after a patient marked with contact/droplet/airborne/enhanced airborne precautions is discharged from that room.

Edit: Discharged meaning theyre moved from that room to somewhere else.

They downright asked me yesterday if Id be able to take care of him if he came home or if they should look into something else. Especially considering how he showed up. Lol

I told them I can only do so much and I cant move him around or get him to the bathroom or clean him.

So odds are hell stay in the hospital.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I kind of guessed it was a deep clean or something considering they were dealing with feces but didnt know about suiting up and what not. Yeah they have a sign on his door saying it needs a terminal clean too where he is now.

Just talked to the doctors. Theyre absolutely sure the cancer is back/never gone. But hes so far down that even if radiation/chemo/surgery were to be an option, he would need a couple of months of strengthening before theyd approve it.

however dad told me when I got here he isnt really interested in doing that and the oncologist told him before there was nothing more to be done.

hes sleeping really hard right now to the point the doctors couldnt wake him up to talk to him.

Im going to have a discussion with hospice care about the best way to take care of him and what will be the best way to help him going forward.

Right now the doctors feel that hes nearing the end.

Ive also been in contact with one of my half brothers. Hes coming out tomorrow night to see our dad. Hes told his two sisters, but thats all I know. They know where he is. I havent talked to them directly.

Our other brother is in the wind as it were. Im trying to find his contact info, but no one seems to have it right now.

He just said he doesnt think either sister can make it. Which is fine. I know they havent really been talking to him for awhile. They might not want to and thats ok.

went and saw my grandfather, and hes pretty much out of it. Its pretty much keeping him comfortable until he goes and it can be any time. But I got to see him one last time.

My cousin and her husband were there, along with my aunt. So we grabbed for a few minutes about family and I came back up to my dad.

Oh, and my dads younger brother called me. So I got him up to present with the info.

The doctor who was telling me about the options was pretty uncomfortable because its obvious my dad decided to let the disease take its course. But he needed to tell me the possible options. Basically came down to quality of life, and while fighting the cancer could extend it, it would mean lower quality of life. Which cant get much lower at this point as far as Im concerned.

Man, I'm sorry TC. Usually when they start talking like that it's basically a less than subtle way of telling you "Your loved one is done for", Source, I've gone through this 3 times in my life, my grandfather, my mother, my grandmother, through it wasn't cancer that took them but kidney failure and they tried so hard...actually scratch that, my grandfather and my grandmother did nothing despite their kids pleading with them, my mother however tried her best and it still wasn't enough. Just know, by the time they become unresponsive and their hands start feeling cold, that's when you'll likely be approached with the question of turning off the life support, god I really fucking hope you never have to hear or see the code blue. That sound, the sight of them running into the room, the fear that creeps into you, I hope you never experience it ever,.

Oh yeah, both my dad and I know hes dying. His first words when I got here? Im croakin. He has a very sardonic sense of humor.

Im not surprised, Ive felt that hes been dying since he started going downhill. Part of surviving things like this is the will to do so. My dad is very tired of the fight and hes made quite a few jokes about just going off in his sleep so it's
done with.

Its rough but I always feel like its worse for the person experiencing it, versus me on the outside.

I wasnt able to get back in time to see my mother, but thats never bothered me. We did not have a good relationship. I didnt have a particularly good one with my father either, but he was more tolerable most of the time. Well, when he wasnt actively abusive. Lol.

At the same time, I dont see death as a bad thing. Especially after an illness like this. My mothers death was entirely preventable and pretty much a form of suicide. My dad is kind of the same way in that hes chosen not to fight his disease. Hes had almost 2 years, so thats not bad. Ive been living with him for a little over a year again, and hes thankful for that.

To put it in somewhat perspective, of his 5 kids, Im the only one thats stayed in constant contact (even if it was months between talking when I lived out west), while all four others have been on no contact multiple times in their lives.

In fact, Im pretty sure 3 are right now. I know for a fact 1 is.

The one son I was able to get ahold of is coming out, but his two sisters are not (hes framed it that they cant, which may be true, but it might also be an excuse), however even if it is an excuse, I dont fault them for that.

The son that I know is no contact, dad said his final words to dad were I want nothing from your in life or death. So yeah.

Kind of off on a tangent but yeah, when my dad goes, he wont have to deal with the pain, and I probably wont mourn anyway. I didnt with my mother and its been 5 years.

By all means tangent away, get all out as often as you can otherwise it will consume you, even through my mom and grandmother passed and I was there for both it still hurts me inside whenever I'm alone and end up coming back to those moments heh, for my mom's I couldn't even see her on her death bed because my eyes were just completely blinded in tears and snot, I was a total mess holding hands with a priest and my brother when that part was over and they were cleaning her body I just lost all control and actually threw myself against the reinforced window of the room because I was so muddled in bad thoughts and incoherrent madness, like they understood that sometimes you just act before you think and my action was to try and human fly myself.

My half brother called me nearly foaming. Hes a disabled vet and isnt happy about them trying to discharge them. So hes going to give them a piece of his mind tomorrow when he gets here. Apparently theres a lot they should be doing that they arent. Including either nearly full time in house services, or if they cant care for him here to move him to another nearby hospital that has room.

Im glad hes coming up to help with this. Im at a fucking loss.

He also said that both sisters wont be coming, and he doesnt know their exact reason why. But he thinks the younger is just because she doesnt know him very well. She was like 4 when he divorced from her mom. Which is fair.

I also found out the other brother is barred via the Will from his own mothers funeral when she goes and she doesnt even want him to know.

Hes pretty much the same today. Still only grazing food wise. Not eating as much as they want. So were giving him protein shakes to help get some extra nutrition into him.

Were getting him ct scans either today or tomorrow to see how the cancer is doing and well make a more informed decision regarding future course of action.

So Im mainly hanging around today... and theres also a different issue Ill be making a separate topic about in a second

Just copying this from what I sent one of my brothers

I only got here a little bit ago, but he did have the scan. The tumor has shrunk, one of his lymph nodes is gone, and theres a fistula, as well as some scar tissue around where the tumor was. The doctor was very upbeat about the potential prognosis. The colorectal surgeon is going to come down and discuss whether maybe doing biopsy on his other lymph node and the scar tissue to see how the cancer is at this point.

Hes on pain meds for the fistula, but doing very well today. A lot more lucid.

It's a shitty situation all around TC, but you're doing everything you can and handling things better than most. I don't even want to think about what I'll do when my Dad gets older.

Hope for the best prepare for the worst. If he ends up not making it, it's really going to hurt that moment it becomes real to you. At the very least I hope he goes peacefully and you and your family get closure.

Thank you. This shit is hard to deal with. My mom was very sudden. She was 14 years younger than my dad so it hit him hard when she went first. He was kind of expecting her to deal with all of this.

However my half brother came out and has been an immense help in getting things situated and getting the hospital to do what they should be doing.

When it comes to him actually dying it probably wont actually affect me emotionally. My mothers never did. They were both abusive and really fucked me up in multiple of ways. I actually never intended on coming back out here because my mom would have been here to deal with this. But after she died my dad didnt have much else. His other kids really keep their distance most of the time.
