I have known furries who are pretty self-aware. I strain to say "normal" but closer to normal than the baseline of furries I have met. It's just my personal experience, I obviously can't know every furry. But of the ones I have met, more than enough of them have felt like there was more beyond just dressing up in a costume. --- This issues still comes to mind now and then Cake was baking in the oven and mother was making tea for us ...
