Yeah FFXI being does make it seem kinda sus. Like a bunch of MMO players who probably don't play anything else made a big contribution to this.

Assuming only mainline final fantasies

3 of those are NES games and the rest are varying degrees of black sheep aside from maybe 15

I'm thinking that the FFXI voters are mostly doing it from nostalgia. Like the players that go through XI all the way would surely be the ones that REALLY like it.

And strangely enough, periodically I'll see a report of XI getting a small update every now and then. So it still seems fairly active.

FFXIV so great that it even has some references (of varying degrees) of all the games below it.

WoW never really established itself in Japan which I assume would completely change the dynamic of how FFXI is remembered.

Interesting that both the west and Japan seem to have converged on FFIX > FFVIII over time.

This is the country that puts an NES rpg in their top games of all time. I do think ffxi being higher than 12 and the NES games (besides 2) is weird.

But maybe there's been some backwards appreciation because of xiv

I'll never play FFXIV again because ARR reminded me why I don't play MMOs anymore. Such a fucking slog yet honestly it was less of a slog than WoW which I played a lot of, a decade and a half ago.

So the top spot as long as an MMO takes it, is always gonna be invisible to my eyes.

yeah everyone says this and I even enjoyed ARR (though the post-ARR content........ugh....)

don't worry there's freaks like me with 1,100 hours over 3 characters that only reached Heavensward for the first time this summer (and then other games happened to distract me away for the rest of the year)
