I rode my bike last winter and smoked my head on the pavement. I was wearing my helmet so it bounced off and was all good, but it felt very...odd.

I don't know about biking, but running is also not recommended when it's under 10 or so Fahrenheit or your breath starts to freeze to your face.

I'm sure it is, but Dutch winters are relatively mild and - more importantly - you have actual bike infrastructure. The problem with winter cycling here isn't so much the cold, it's the fact that there's a snowbank where the bike lane used to be, even less room on the roads than usual, and so much ice and slush around the edges of the road that I need more clearance than usual to be safe. What little cycling infrastructure exists is treated as an afterthought and clearly secondary to all other transportation infrastructure.

If the snow/slush melts off the streets and its fairly warm Ill sometimes pull out the bike. Usually happens at least a couple times a winter.

It's more that they don't compare to what much of the rest of the world would consider to be winter weather. While Amsterdam presumably doesn't get the worst of it because it's relatively far south, I'm seeing an average annual snowfall total of about 5-6 cm and an average low of 2C (https://www.weather-atlas.com/en/netherlands/amsterdam-climate#snowfall). By comparison, the same source lists my city (Halifax in Canada) as having an average annual snowfall total of 45-50 cm and an average low of -5.5C, and I wouldn't even say that Halifax gets particularly rough winters most of the time (being coastal and also one of the southernmost cities in Canada).

Amsterdam, south?

I just meant we had actual winters when I was a kid. I wholly agree that we rarely get actual winters nowadays.

The city just west of me got 183 cm of snow in one day, haha!

Roughly half of the country is north of it. Of course, that means roughly half of the country is south of it, but meh. I mostly just wanted to acknowledge that it probably doesn't get the worst of the country's winters.

I think the worst we've seen (at least in my lifetime) was 103 in one night, or 55 in one storm and 60 in a second one within the same week. Fortunately, those were separate winters, because Halifax very much is not equipped to handle that kind of snow on anything resembling a regular basis.
