There used to be character popularity contests where people all over the internet would vote for their favorite video game character.

Because of the way modded messages appeared, as well as a few other features that have been changed (such as how signatures worked), people were able to make it look like they had been modded even though they hadn't.

Censor bypassing was punished with an automatic ban. The logic was (IIRC) that since you had to go out of your way to bypass the censor, you couldn't possibly be breaking the rule accidentally and deserved the harshest punishment possible.

KOS (Kill on Sight) was also a thing (certain banned users were on a list that if they ever showed up again and were discovered, they were instantly banned)

Signatures were nothing more than a shortcut for text that would be pre-loaded into the post message box.

Censor bypassing also ignored line breaks, so it was annoying putting Yoshi and Zelda next to each other on an alphabetical list of characters.
