I am not 100% sure on this, but apparently this is what is often the cause of families getting food poisoning from Thanksgiving dinner. From what I know its due to the fact the stuffing can't cook all the way inside the bird. They say you should cook it outside to ensure safe Temps are reached.

Even before this was known, I never liked stuffing from the turkey anyways. Always came out soggy and flavorless. I could eat a whole plate of stuffing otherwise, especially if it is slathered in gravy.

Ive always wanted to do the inside the turkey stuffing... but if I did that Id take it out and finish it while the bird rested rather than eat it straight. Because youd have to murder the bird to get it to safe temps.

When I do the turkey, I cook it at a very high temperature (500F initially, then 350), but when the juices hit the hot pan, they start to burn and the kitchen quickly fills up with smoke. I figured out how to avoid this by putting vegetables (potatoes, carrots, and sweet onions) in the bottom of the pan and setting the turkey rack on top. The veggies soak up the juices, which also makes them taste absolutely amazing.

The wine. It makes the sham holiday and table-full of mediocrity tolerable until the precise moment someone starts talking politics, usually that one idiot who can neither keep their mouth shut nor form any valid opinions of their own based on actual facts. Oh, the wine is bad too? Well, I'm glad to see most of the family after a long drive one way, so I'll be glad to spend these few hours seeing and hearing the same stories as usual, being part of the "I'm thankful for X" event, and taking the long drive back home.

I may have some feelings about the holiday as a whole. -.-

Maybe My experience with Thanksgiving is different. Usually, the drive isnt long for me (unless you count the flight I take home to see my family). But the drive to we here we go is either short, or non-existent And rarely does anyone bring up politics. Its mostly asking anyone who doesnt live in the area about whats new in their life. And seeing any of the new kids born. Or older kids who you havent seen since they were very young And great food Also, its been a while since weve done the Thankful event. One of my least favorite things Some people do a small personal one, and those are fine

When I was in SoCal, well... LA, so it's a drive everywhere. Now that I'm in western WA, it's . . . the better part of the same drive to reach family who are also up here. So yeah, mileage will vary.

Must be nice. It's a guarantee in my family, even if most people either agree completely or just try to stay out of it.

And great food

Don't get me wrong, the cooks in my family are good, and thus the quality of each item tends to be good. But it's the same obligatory selection of food every year.

Its mostly asking anyone who doesnt live in the area about whats new in their life.

In my case, anyone from out of state tends to be quiet and not share unless asked directly. Most of the family has scattered in the last decade, and most don't feel like fling to another state for the one holiday; a card ends up sufficing. Plus we tend to know what people in the family are up to, thanks to modern conveniences. So unless someone has a movie or board game planned, the gettogether becomes an awkward, silent situation of a bunch of adults nodding at one another in lieu of having nothing new to say.

And all of that is just the experience side of things. The holiday itself, such as its actual history versus the propaganda we're all taught in schools, the prayers before eating that we non-Christians could do without but have to sit through, or the insane levels of a commercial nightmare that follows? I can do without the experience year, after year, after year. Thankfully, my family here in WA are not the praying sorts, but you get the idea.

My grandmother used to make the worst turkey. She was so pissed when I took over the cooking and everybody went nuts for my turkey. Everyone wanted seconds and thirds of mine, while my grandmother always had tons of leftovers.

But she did make an incredible stuffing. She never gave me the recipe, but I remember it had homemade cornbread and hard boiled eggs. I don't think I've ever seen a stuffing recipe that used hard boiled eggs before.

Politics is one of those topics that people know causes trouble. So, we try to avoid it. Though, many people agree politically on many things, we still try not to bring it up most of the time

Thats true. When you eat at the same place, its probably the same foods. That said, there are foods that I sometimes only eat around that time. And sometimes, they update the menu. Having the same menu means I know Ill have food I like, though But if I go somewhere different, then I can get different food. Like when I spent Thanksgiving with my BF (Which I might see about doing this year since tickets are too expensive) or when we do stuff at work or another friends house

That does sound awkward. Most of the family live in the same state. So, for most of the family, its just another get together where they all talk and have fun. But even the people from out of state join in That said, our family has always been close, and we never seem to run out of things to talk about Even with modern conveniences like social media, we still may miss something here and there
