Should election day be a federal holiday

I think so because it would give people time to get their thoughts together about who they vote for as opposed to getting off work to rush to the poll.

I don't think there's much need to give people a day to get their thoughts in order, given that most people know who they'll be voting for weeks, months, or even years in advance, but there is potentially some merit in ensuring that working won't interfere with people's ability to vote. In practice, though, I think expanding advance voting options and polling station hours is the better way to do that, since holidays are quite disruptive.

This is also a consideration. As much as I stand by my previous statement that there are more efficient ways to do it, a holiday does make voting more accessible in a way that's very hard to erode without calling attention to the fact that you're eroding it. Reducing polling station hours is easy to justify by feigning a lack of staff. People on the side of the party that most wants suppress votes already cheer when you make advance voting more difficult, especially under the pretense of security. But cancelling a holiday once it's established and people are expecting a day off? That's hard to justify and the only people on your side will be those that have to work it anyway (which are one of the reasons it's not an ideal solution).

Yes, absolutely. There should be no excuse to doing one's civic duty.

Voting in person, on election day is the safest way to ensure your vote is counted accurately, while minimizing voter fraud.

several states require companies to give people time off if they wish to vote...

no rushing required

Most people wouldn't utilize it anyway, especially the 3 years that are not for president. And now, with states pushing mail in voting, there seems to be less of a reason anyway.

I do however like the idea of giving people the day off if it will be utilized. I also feel the best way of getting your vote to count, is to actually go to your local voting site. It's also a good experience. But again, would it be utilized correctly.

if they did this, most wouldn't use it to vote, and in a few years stores would have "voting day/weekend sales"

It shouldn't just be a day. It should be multiple days and workplaces should be legally required to make sure that each worker gets one of those days off at minimum.

Yes. People would probably feel more ready to vote if they don't have to deal with work or school on the same day.
