I have been to Red Robin recently (I love Red Robin, fuck y'all) and yes, its prices are also way up. All price are up. This is not just a Five Guys problem.

Red Robin serves alcohol which I assume is the primary reason to go over Five Guys tbh

but really would rather just grill burgers from a package from Costco or something, only thing is buns are always awkwardly packaged

Ah yes, bottomless fries, 7 at a time. They're so stingy with them.

I like Red Robin too but god damn those fries suck. They're bottomless because they know you can't eat more than a few bites before your mouth dries out.

Five Guys fries are actually bottomless since you do try to eat as much as you can, but they always defeat you.

Lol, I never said red Robin was upscale, but it does differ from Applebee's and TGIF type establishments in that burgers are their big thing. So the comparison is at least warranted. And believe it or not it is slightly cheaper as most meals cost 13.99. Granted that's not much cheaper, but still, it's a fast food place vs a sit down restaurant.

I think your mistake is thinking sit down restaurants are higher quality even though 90% of their food is pre-packaged from the restaurant supply and/or microwaved.

Five Guys makes everything fresh right in front of you and often lists the source farms. Every other smash burger in the country is trying to copy their quality.

But I guess Red Robin has faux leather booths with gum stuck under the table so it should be more expensive?

again the main reason to go to Red Robin over Five Guys or other fast casual burger places is alcohol

but at that point you are competing with dive bars that more than likely will be cheaper and give you a better burger. And if you have kids you can take them to a diner for the same experience.

Think the Habit was probably decent value but I havent been in years so the price probably has gone up

I've definitely learned to live with a decreased appetite these last few years. Not really worth the headache or hassle to buy much food.

Not really. People have had this same confusion with Five Guys forever since they put it in the same bucket as McD. See how many "Five Guys vs In n Out" discussions there were.

I think I've had a fast food burger once or twice since the pandemic began - it's just too difficult for me to justify the new costs.

If anything, I'm thankful Little Caesars has only jacked up the price of their $5 pepperoni to $6.

I'm just going to eat lunch and dinner at Costco every day and spend $1.50 for a hotdog and a soda. $3 a day for 365 days is barely $1100 for the entire year.

2006 is kinda early. The first I had heard of Five Guys was during some TV special showing the beginning of the Obama administration and how grabbing Five Guys for lunch was a special treat. That was 2009, and I still had never seen one physically because there weren't that many of them.

This reminds me of a story I came across or was told about regarding someone who was saving up for something getting an all-encompassing annual pass to some theme park that included free meals and going there every day for lunch or dinner. It saved them quite a bit on food money apparently.
