I'm not actually even sure if he was the main character of the comic strip, but obviously sometime after Popeye came around he became the star of the show, and the other guy was basically wiped from history. Semi-related, but Popeye originally appeared as a side character in a Betty Boop animated cartoon, and then got his own cartoon short series.
