Three Dutch commandos were injured in a shooting in Indianapolis, Indiana, early Saturday morning. All three men were hospitalized, and at least one of them was in critical condition, and one was in stable condition.
A statement from the Dutch Ministry of Defense indicated two of the victims are conscious and were able to answer questions. However, a police spokesperson told local media outlets that two men were in critical condition.

The incident happened just after 3:30 a.m. local time on the 100 block of South Meridian, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told NL Times. An argument on the street may have preceded the shooting.
The shooting took place in front of the hotel where the commandos are staying, the ministry said. The incident happened during the military members free time. There were no arrests made in the case, and the investigation is ongoing, the ministry added.

Prior to the shooting, the three commandos may have gotten into a fight at a different location, local broadaster WISH reported. Several witnesses were interviewed, and police were following leads in the hours after the shooting that could take them to the suspects involved.
Indianapolis police were not immediately able to release a description of the suspect or suspects involved. Investigators do not believe the incident was random, police told local television station WRTV.
The three military personnel are part of the Dutch Commando Corps. They were in the United States taking part in a training exercise in the Indiana. Their families were notified of the shooting.
WRTV reported that it was the second time in a week that three people were shot in a single incident in Indianapolis.

I mean if your off duty soldiers were possibly in a fight over something earlier.. They're in America. People solve problems with gun violence here. You need to be aware of the culture of where you're visiting and act smart. I'm glad they're okay it seems. I hope the third one is okay too. But yes, that is our culture here. Don't visit.

These are the kind of soldiers that know how to escalate and de-escalate any situation. That they are the only ones that got hurt shows they let the other side live.

That's why it wouldn't make anyone think extra about the fact it was Dutch soldiers.

The sword of damocles is a common saying, I don't know why people are so hung up about it.

Maybe in your small circle, but if I was to ask 10 random Americans what the sword of Damocles is, maybe 1-2 would have some idea and I feel like Im being generous by saying that many.

I dont mean to be a buzzkill or anything but I knew what it means. To say its a common phrase implies a majority of people would know what it means and that is incorrect.

I have heard the phase before, but outside of the edgiest of edge-lords, no one is using it in common speech.

Because we are both nerds on a video game message board and not an accurate representation of the population as a whole.

You have to remember, in this use of the analogy, I am below the sword and you/US posters are effectively holding on to its string.

That is obviously going to affect how each of us views the risk and dangers involved.
