When used correctly, the Internet is a great tool, even social media can be amazing.

But I think that, as a whole, society wasnt really ready for it. There should definitely be some way to test people on whether or not theyre mentally well enough for the internet and / or social media.

I certainly believe some folk should stay voiceless online. However if this became a thing then chances are not many people will be online. The amount of times I got modded because someone somewhere got offended is a good indication of how this would turn out.

While I'd very much like the idea of Hamas being banned from the internet, in my mind the internet isn't a single entity and should continue to be treated as such. I'm fine with say, the US banning people they ban entering the country from entering their sites, but I also don't like the idea of forcibly tracking identities online.

I think that social media things that actually involve IRL/internet interfacing should identify users so such bans can be put in to place, but otherwise I think it should be a matter of the site owner deciding for themselves, like a club with a blacklist. I don't think that it's any more appropriate to put trackers on people's internet usage than it is to bug someone's car irl.

That being said, I do think there should be regular accessible channels for anyone to use, even if they are not responsible enough to handle social media; ie Basic Online Rights. Everyone deserves Messenger, basic communication, and access to library-type stuff.

see, there's one big group of people that are good with science

then there's another big group that isn't. I can tell you it isn't going to be the people sharing 'shit-your-pants' memes on facebook that are going to be calling the shots. That being said, there will be some people disappointed on all sides of the spectrum, but the general 'right' would get the objective shaft if we're basing policy off reality.

The internet is a great resource for people to access new information and reach out to other people.

The problem is that many people are total fucking morons who can't comprehend that information isn't always true, and let their biases override any shred of critical thinking they may have been capable of.

It's not even as if that's a necessity - I still pay all my bills physically and do all my banking in person.

Arguably about the only thing I do digitally at all that has a financial element is when I order stuff from Amazon. But even that is 100% luxuries, nothing that I absolutely require to live or survive.

Society as a whole is certainly moving more towards a digital-only future in many facets of life, but we're not really there yet at all. Denying someone total access to the Internet right now would certainly be an inconvenience to them, but the average person could live just fine never going online again.

All narrow-minded people who refuse to believe they are probably wrong and spout outdated and debunked crap as proof. Also, all they can do is call people nasty names. (For a huge example, see the Politics board on this very website.)

It's one of those things that might sound like a good idea at first, but it generally has horrible applications and implications.

Yeah, with the exception of just really low-end jobs. And then just about every white collar job requires some internet use, even if it's just for email. Overall, the internet is kinda inescapable.

This interpretation is quite broad. I agree with some parts of the internet being integral to our lives, and some parts not being. Social media is...not integral, no matter how much people insist it is. People act as if social media is 'the public square' when it simply isn't - it's the equivalent of a message board. It's owned privately. It's a place to piss away time.

As I said earlier - sure, people should have fundamental rights to parts of the internet, and certain functions of it. Those might even benefit from public ownership, instead of the corporate model of Facebook, etc. That being said, there still will have to be limits and potential bans for some people in the interest of public safety, if the messaging service or job-connection site is publicly owned.

Messaging, maps, public services, medical services, encyclopedia access, job-searching - these should absolutely be considered rights. Someone might point out that those are accessible via the library, but I definitely think broader availability is something to strive for.

Crude analogy, but imagine someone takes a dump in the only grocery store every day for a bit and gets kicked out. Then complains that he can't access basic services because he can't get food from the grocery store. Like, sorry, but that becomes a you problem.

No. Depending on the crime they should only be banned from certain aspects. There's no reason why somebody should be banned from using say a Steam account for something they did elsewhere.

Reminder: the worst parts of use of the internet are expressions of the worst parts of humanity. The internet doesn't hold a unique problem, it merely amplifies humanity's traits, the most vile amongst them also.
