How many credit cards do you have?

Currently sitting at five and it feels like a bit much sometimes, usually I use them depending on what category I'm spending on to get the most cash back. That said, my go-to gives 2% cash back on everything.

Do you mean cards without a credit line, such as a debit card that you can run as credit? I'm mainly referring to a card with an open credit line for the purposes of this topic.

Two.

One was just to build credit. After I had it for a while, the same company offered me a new card with a little bit of cashback and a higher limit, so it seemed silly not to take it.

same here.

is there any other country that puts as much emphasis on "building credit" as a "responsible" person.

here when applying for a bigger loan and whatnot they just look at your overall purchase history regardless if it's with a credit or debet card among other things(age, education/job, overall debt etc.).

Yep and even when looking at it purely from a benefits point of view, I dont know of any credit card in Aus with cash back like what the US has, our rewards are abysmal and not worth the credit card fee

Would hurt my credit score to close them so I just keep them open.

My trifecta

Wells Fargo Active Cash (2% back on everything)
Citi Custom Cash (5% back on your highest category, I reserve it for groceries)
Bank of America Customized Cash Back (3% on chosen category, I pick gasoline)

Don't really travel or eat out enough to get a card for that but would probably be the next if I had more money and vacation time.

Two Citi cards
Three Chase cards
Two American Express cards
One CapitalOne card
Best Buy
JCPenney
Firestone
My credit union card

Also have a small revolving line of credit Ive never used, and a HELOC I just put about 30k of home renovations on.

I think thats all of them. I only use the three Chase cards though: Amazon Rewards card for all Amazon purchases because 5% cashback and Freedom Unlimited card for all monthly bills and spending because unlimited cashback, then a Slate Edge card that has like $20k of medical bills on it at 0% interest for the next year and a half. The Amazon and Freedom cards are always paid in full each month.

All the other cards are just hanging out to make my credit score look good. Total limit between everything is like 120k last I checked. The Citi cards are nice backups because I always get offers to use them for 0% balance transfers even though their original 0% periods ended years ago.

I want to get the Chase Sapphire Preferred card next to replace my Freedom Unlimited. Having a metal card sounds cool, and those travel points will add up quick.

In my case, I spent my early 20s being horribly irresponsible with credit cards and just kept opening new ones when they got maxed out lol

Worked out in the end since my credit score is in the upper 700s now because I have a shitload of 8-10 year old accounts and a very low percentage of credit being used

Don't you have to pay annual fees for each credit cards in the US?

Because that's the reason why I own only one, lol ^^
I just use it for online transactions. But I fail to see why I should own more than one.

When going out for dinner or buying stuff directly in the store, I always use my standard debit card instead. No need to buy things on credit.

No. It depends entirely on the card. Some have annual fees, some don't. Out of the 4 credit cards, I currently have, only 1 has an annual fee. And I plan on getting rid of it because of that.

And I put all of my purchases on 1 credit card because it gives me cash back on everything. Then just pay it off quickly so it doesn't accrue interest.

why on earth would people have so many CC's.

I literally just opened all three of my Chase ones within the last month or so. I took a credit hit but it will rebound.

I did it at the guidance of a good friend of mine who has about 15 cards and gets lots of rewards with them.

I told him I want to travel, so he recommended the three cards I got. Chase Flex, Unlimited and Sapphire.

Chase allows you to share and transfer points between accounts, so he tells me that the Flex has quarterly perks. This month, if you spend at a gas station, you get 5% extra back, which somehow comes out to 9% back on purchases at gas stations. (He told me to buy whatever I like in gift cards and use those because giftcards count in this bonus.... and they do) 200 dollar bonus for 500 dollars worth of use in 3 months.

For the Unlimited, it has a base 1.5% back, so it is good for anything not covered by the other two cards. 200 dollar bonus for 500 dollars worth of use in 3 months.

And lastly for the Sapphire (500 dollar annual fee), I guess there's a bunch of perks for travelers, such as 300 dollar allowance annually, 70,000 points for spending 4,000 dollars in the first three months (I am planning trips already so now is a good time) and access to Global Entry, pre-check, no cost of monetary conversions and a lot of other things going on that are good for frequent travelers.

So, I guess I build up my points on the lesser two cards and pull all the points to the Sapphire for the better benefits in the end.

I'm still new to it but I trust him a lot. He's a very smart guy. His wife wants me to take a trip to Europe with them next year. I might actually do it since Japan's traveler situation is so skewed right now.

Just to clarify, anyone can apply to Global Entry/Precheck, you don't need the Sapphire Reserved. Using it for the application fee will reimburse the cost, though. Which is I think $100 for Global Entry (just get that, btw, no need for both, you'll only be reimbursed for one anyway).
