What album should we cover for Raetsel_Lapin's week?

Previous results can be seen here:
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Sunday, August 14 at 8:00 AM EST - though if you are for whatever reason listening to the album around that time, just say so in the topic and I can delay a bit
7. You can sign up to be added to the user cycle - the next person on the list will choose 3 albums which the other users will vote on for the next topic.
7a. To ensure people are being given an actual choice, the three nominated albums must be by different artists. You can otherwise stick to a similar sound or era.
7b. The tiebreaker for these polls will be whichever is listed first in the poll options - make sure to deliver the results in order of your own preference (which will hopefully have the added benefit of influencing people toward your first choice if they can't decide).
7c. I have added a tiered vote structure - the least popular album will be removed and its backup votes distributed to the other two entrants.

General Album Comments

BlueCrystalTear: My familiarity with the Cranberries is limited to "Linger", "Dreams", and "Zombie" so this is gonna be interesting to go through.

I thought I should just do a first listen today and, after completing it, I found a lot of songs to be repetitive - the lyrics just refrain again and again to a pretty ridiculous extent. The vocals and instrumentation are excellent but the band reaches its heights when the song isn't six words long. And there are definitely some here, though... not quite in the song I expected them to be. I like that.

Raetsel_Lapin: That's about how I feel after the first listen. I've spent more than enough time ranting against repetition, so let's just say this album isn't for me... but I do find their sound intriguing enough that I don't especially mind listening to this album anyway.

ChichiriMuyo: Depression is repetitive, kids.

ChichiriMuyo (on Cranberries' previous album): This whole album, it's all about the kind of depression one might experience when they've been abused, at least emotionally, at a young age. This is Dolores's songwriting about her youth, and it's not a coincidence that the follow up is "no need to argue." No caps. Not in either album. The two albums in totality are just saying "fine, I tried, now I'm going off on my own." I don't really know her life, but I know from the songs on these two albums that she was escaping something, someone that made her feel less than. I think maybe over the course of this weeks album you might figure that out.

Seanchan: My initial impression ranged from eh to zzz. I perked up a bit in the 2nd half. Not sure if thats because the back half is better or if after 30 minutes I finally caught the wave of the album.

We'll see what a few more listens brings. This one is a big drop in energy after the last 2 weeks.

BlueCrystalTear: Three listens was enough for me. I like, but don't love, this. My rankings became pretty clear to me after three, with only slight changes from one to the next. The top three and the bottom three stayed the same (same order for the top though) from one listen to the next.

neonreaper: After my top three songs, I'd say most of the album is "okay" for. They were a good band that seemed to make the music that they set out to make, I enjoy some of it quite a bit, and respect the rest of it. I don't have a ton of confidence in my middle rankings, but I was happy to listen to Yeat's Grave a bunch this week :)

Johnbobb: overall a great album, and Dolores O'Riordan is flat out incredible at using her voice less for traditional vocals and more as an instrument of its own

Seanchan: I didn't particularly care for this album. It's fine, I don't hate it, but I can't see myself listening to it again except maybe as background music that I'm not paying attention to.

ChichiriMuyo: A lot of bands face a sophomore slump. They put together every good to decent thing they've ever written and just find themselves creatively tapped by their second album. Not The Cranberries. No, not only were they able to largely continue with the same feel and content as their first album they went further, evolving it, going deeper and darker, creating their Magnum Opus. Dolores O'Riordan really looked into her world, inner and outer, and saw so much darkness and refined it into genuine poetry. She expresses her pain from difficult relationships (familial, social and romantic) as well as the pain she saw around her, especially when it came to the ways innocent children can be hurt by people with so much more power than them. Yet in spite of all this doom and gloom there is a glimmer of hope in there. Just because things have been bad, just because bad things may continue to happen, there's no reason to believe it will always be bad. You can move on from it, maybe you can even be stronger for it.

Ranking the tracks of this album was incredibly difficult for me, almost like ranking one's own children. Every single track taps into something deep inside me, even the weakest on the album (not that I think any of them are weak). It certainly doesn't hurt that this album came out just as I was entering that troublesome period of puberty, meaning that every one of these songs felt like they were written for me by the only person in the world who understood what I was going through. lol. I guess there's no need to argue, this album will always be special to me, special to me.

MetalmindStats: I think I like every song here individually, as well as the way they all come together to comprise an album.

Raetsel's notes on this week:

For my first week, I'd like to offer a second chance to some albums that were nominated and sadly failed to make the cut. Each album comes from a different nominator and I think they offer a pretty decent spread of genres while being reasonably accessible.

-----

Ice Nine Kills - The Silver Scream:
(Snake)
A metalcore concept album centered around horror movies. For horror fans like me, it's a dream come true. But I think just describing in like that does it a disservice. It's a lot more manic and insane than that. Theatrical and pop flourishes pepper this album with some of the catchiest and most cinematic choruses in metal, all while each verse hits hard with chugging riffs and scarily good puns, references, and LOTS of violent screaming unlock the inner killer within yourself.

(Raetsel)
I only added myself to the user cycle after this album failed to get selected because it is, by far, the album I'm most disappointed to have seen lose its week. This one is at the top of the list for both Snake and myself, so I'm hoping people will give it more of a chance this time.

I'll also say that I don't think you need to be into horror movies to appreciate the songs. I don't care for horror or most genres of metal and I'm still into this band.

-----

-----

Maggie Rogers - Heard It in a Past Life:
(darkx)
Maggie Rogers' debut album features the original two singles that launched her to stardom years earlier, Alaska and On + Off, but is highlighted by the hit Light On, which was played absolutely everywhere.

(Raetsel)
This album features the song "Retrograde", which I criminally underrated at one of my ranking topics. Since I have gone back to that track for years now, I'm quite curious if any of her other tracks can live up to Retrograde.

Of these three albums, this is the only one I haven't personally looked into -but- it has a song I love, several hit singles, and darkx's endorsement so I feel comfortable nominating it.

-----

-----

The Ataris - So Long, Astoria:
(Seanchan)
[This album] is a little more obscure, as their big hit from this album was a cover of The Boys of Summer. And to be honest, this album is the entirety of what I've ever listened to from them. But for whatever reason, it's stuck with me and continues to be an album I go back to.

(Raetsel)
A pop-punk album that's far more of a pleasant easy listen than I expect from punk music. I was tempted to swap this nom for "End Is Forever" which has my favorite song from the band... but since this album has Seanchan's endorsement & is also good, I'll stick with this pick instead of going rogue.

First listen done.

Worst album we've covered.

LOL, NO just kidding. I came into this with pretty low expectations, but I come away a little gobsmacked. I listen to this and I think, this could absolutely be commercially successful, instead of only having 260 monthly Spotify listeners.

There's a strong pop-punk vibe that's absolutely in my wheelhouse, though there's definitely some songs that go a little harder or a little more acoustic. Lots of catchy riffs and choruses. Instrumentation is good, singing is good.

I was trying to get some other stuff done while doing my initial listen, and I kept having to stop as something about this demanded my attention!

Looking forward to giving this a few more listens. I sure hope that we get some good participation this week, even though it's a "no name" band.

Glad you liked it, Sean! (I can tell you truly listened because you said "gobsmacked" - a word noticeably used in "Tunguska")

Here is the intro piece to this album (and to Sunspot) that I said I was writing...

As I said when I nominated this, Im friends with them. Im in their inner circle. I sometimes do watchalongs with them online, and they accept me for the weirdo I am. They also make awesome music and have for 25 years, with their first album coming in 2000 and their most recent the day my nominations were due (I got drunk at the club at the release party). Sunspot has always had three members: Mike Huberty (lead vocals, bass guitar), Ben Jaeger (guitars, keyboards, backing/harmony vocals), and Wendy Lynn Markus (nee Staats; drums, violin, backing/harmony vocals). Formed in college when Wendy replaced a guy who got cold feet, they are basically family now.

As the title implies, Singularity had 12 songs released as singles, one per month for a year, before they were all assembled onto an album (with tracks in release order) with bonus track Alive Day. I legit like every song here (ranking them is, like ChichiriMuyo said last week, "like ranking one's own children"), and its nice to take a trip through an artistic evolution that explores a diversity of influences. The consistency largely stems from the focus on one song at a time. For these reasons, I expect there to be very variable rankings.

The monthly nature helped begin Sunspots transition from raw indie music to glossy, polished arena rock. The next album, the space-rock The Slingshot Effect (the last album recorded at Garbage's Smart Studios), was yet another step further, but it was their next album after that, Weirdest Hits (an amalgamation of EPs, rather than a true compilation), was where they really exploded into that arena rock sound. (I didnt choose that one due to its intimidating 77-minute runtime and 18 tracks.) That one's worth a listen too, if you have the time. You may be surprised at how different the production sounds compared to this one.

Also fun: The video for "Grand Guignol" is hilarious (both Ben and Wendy nail it here), and not what you'd expect from a song named for a French horror theatre:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9HK5R_jx4c

If you guys want info about the songs, lemme know, but I'll let your thoughts come to you. Enjoy~

Are people wanting to do another Rank the Albums for albums 51-75? I think with the new formula I used last time, I can be clearer in the intro that you don't have to have listened to everything (as your votes only compare the albums you have heard) which might help increase participation

I can do that. The only reason I didn't was that I felt I needed to listen to everything beforehand. Whoops.

Yes, I like ranking all the albums!

Tunguska
Trashy Hot
Uncanny Valley
Dig Your Grave
Grand Guignol
2012
Alive Day
No Place Like Home
More Than My Degree
Path Of Most Resistance
Sweet Relief
Hypnogogic
Square Root Of All Evil

With the first few tracks I wasn't sure if I liked the vocals or not, like some parts sounded really good and some parts sounded...I guess weird is the best word? The middle of the album is very good stuff, and the last few tracks are still pretty good. Overall, solid album, with only one song I didn't like. BCT's description of their later albums got me interested in checking out their other stuff; I do enjoy both arena rock and longer albums so Weirdest Hits sounds like something right up my alley.

HA! I'd like to say that's the reason I used that word, but maybe it did worm its way into my head via the song. One listen isn't really enough for me to distinguish all the tracks in my mind. The one I specifically remember is about having "F U" money.

It's noticeable how much Mike's voice improved as the album went on (recall each track was recorded a month after the previous). These days, he does not sound like the same guy he did on the first few albums, and I mean that in a good way. As I said, this was sort of a "bridge album" - a metamorphosis from the band that recorded "Eat Out My Heart" into the one that would record "Arthuriana." I've posted about both songs here on B8 before, as they're two of their most popular.

BCT's description of their later albums got me interested in checking out their other stuff; I do enjoy both arena rock and longer albums so Weirdest Hits sounds like something right up my alley.
Let me know what you think! The soaring guitars are a lot more dominant on the albums produced by Eric LaBrosse, the first of which is Weirdest Hits. As I said, I would've nominated that one if I thought people would do it. A 77-minute, 18-track album from an artist people don't recognize would turn them away so I went with 48/13 instead. That said, next week's album is 76 minutes exactly but... it's Sir Elton John, who needs no introduction.

Psychology is a powerful thing. Subconscious stuff happens. And the "F U money" one is "Square Root of All Evil" - the most acoustic song of the bunch, and also one of the funniest because where else would you find someone saying they'll use a Van Gogh as toilet paper?

I would very much like to (...and actually relisten to the albums and rank them on time this time) - I've been withholding most of my thoughts in anticipation of another Rank the Albums, for one thing.

Anyways, I gave Singularity my first spin tonight, from which I think I can already say that The Police clearly inspired Sunspot here. I was also relieved to find (most of) the song lyrics on Bandcamp.

Yeah, for whatever reason the track order on Bandcamp is wrong (it's supposed to be in the order the singles were released) and it's missing "Alive Day" (which is on the physical CD, YouTube, and Spotify). I can look into getting the lyrics for that one, if you'd like (it's a song about self-rebirth that was featured in the climax of their rock opera Major Arcana, which was their only big tour). Bandcamp has the most information about all the other songs, though, including what each of them sounds like.

The Police is definitely one of the influences, of which there are many. A lot of their stuff feels like it's from 1983 or 84, around that time when arena rock was moving away from New Wave and toward glam metal.

Glad you enjoyed it too, Raetsel!

...I will say your last place is, again, controversial. Though you wouldn't have known it, "No Place Like Home" is part of their standard concert closer (often followed by a cover). It's actually the only song from this album they still frequently play live. They have over a hundred songs and they can only play so many in the average two-hour show.

I wanna ask if they'll bring back a couple others. Would love to see some of them performed after all these years, see if they sound any different. May ask when I see them tomorrow.

Also bump.

It's a fine song and seems like it'd have mainstream appeal, but... let's just say our hometown is *not* a very good place, so the subject matter is quite literally the exact opposite of what we want to hear right now. Can't get past the aversion to the lyrics to judge it fairly, so it's an easy last place... though it's easy to understand why someone from a better home might enjoy it.

Sorry to hear your hometown was shitty to you. I can understand why you'd feel that way about the song then (and sorry to have brought it up), and I hope you've found an actual place that feels like "home" should. I have mixed feelings about my hometown but... it's still home to me despite that.

No, no, nothing to apologize for. The song isn't triggering, I was prepared to explain that placement if pressed on it, and I vent about home often enough that I'm not especially averse to discussing the town--though this is neither the time nor place to do so. Just the wrong choice of subject matter, though I can still be glad for those that it does resonate with.

I'm sorry your home could also be better, but glad that it at least feels like home?

Yeah, I have memories both good and bad around here. I haven't drifted far from the only place I've ever known as home. Leaving it now would feel too strange, and I don't like the idea of starting over in a strange land. So.. the song resonates more with me, more because I can't leave for the reasons it states. This is reflected in my placement of it.

Also afternoon bump! I'll post my rankings Saturday, probably. Again, don't want to influence people, since they're unfamiliar to pretty much all of you.

I'm so hung over right now, but I do remember Mike and Ben saying last night they might bring "Tunguska" to their live set, so that will make you guys happy.

Always nice to chat with them. Even told Mike about this.

Here we go - again, wanted to wait on posting this until everyone had enough time to listen so I wouldn't sway them. It's not like with other albums we've done where people go in knowing what to expect.

I've listened like six times in the past week and, as a result, have gotten almost every song on the album stuck in my head at one point. There's both serious stuff and funny stuff on here, and both are done incredibly well. Each song has its own personality, too. Again, this is like ranking your children. Other Sunspot albums would've been similarly difficult. I hate that something has to be last. But... I think I'm happy with this.

  1. No Place Like Home Despite the serious subject matter, there are many funny little lyrics in here, like Christmas gift with batteries not included and dont call me Dorothy. Add in the killer bass opener and youve got the albums most enduring song. I also kinda relate to it >_>
  2. Grand Guignol No, its not just because of the video. Amazing drums and a lot of kick-ass. I would definitely say that the people in Paris who went to the eccentric theatre of the same name in the first half of the 20th century would not have been ready for this, either.
  3. More Than My Degree This one always cheers me up. I picture a shirtless moron singing on his desk trying to seduce his TA every single time. Its great to laugh at that image, especially since hes clearly the only student in the class whos not taking it seriously.
  4. Tunguska Lots of fun. And I really want to see this one live. I know disasters in my life arent really the end of the world, even if the Mayans wanted us to think so.
  5. Alive Day Its a natural closer and it feels like a sweeping epic with the instrumentation and Mikes best vocal on the album. The powerful message of self-rebirth is hugely helpful.
  6. Square Root of All Evil Also hilarious, and one of the earliest examples of Wendy Lynns violin work (which has since become much more prominent). They don't have many acoustic songs. What DO rich people actually do with their money? (HINT: Its probably just sitting there in the Bank of Geneva)
  7. Uncanny Valley I can kinda relate to the thought of wanting to become a cyborg to distance myself from humanity, but this song shows actually doing it is risky and unsatisfying. People still arent ready for cyborgs. Including the ones that would become them. Music-wise... the riffs are amazing, and this wouldve fit great on The Slingshot Effect.
  8. Trashy Hot
  9. Path of Most Resistance
  10. Hypnogogic
  11. Dig Your Grave
  12. 2012 That killer guitar intro is about it. Also, here in Madison, the Mayan Apocalypse kinda came true because we had a snowstorm called The End of the World - ~21 inches in 36 hours. It may have been this songs fault.
  13. Sweet Relief

There's this expression I really hate: "it was better than it had any right to be". It always strikes me as condescending, and revealing more about the person saying it than about the media/art being discussed. I know the intention isn't usually bad but still...

That stupid preamble isn't to say Singularity is better than I expected; it was MUCH better! I won't echo my first listen thoughts again, but suffice to say that they still apply. I was worried this was going to be too indie but that's not the case. Yes, some of the backup singing isn't great (mostly I'm thinking about 2012), and maybe the audio mix sounds a little muddy at points (mostly thinking about Path of Most Resistance) but I can overlook that when the rest is otherwise so strong.

I did a bonus listen this week, which is always a good sign of my enjoyment. This album goes pretty deep for me. There's some really great stuff in the top half of my ranking. I had to put Square Root of All Evil at #1 because I feel like that's the one I'm going to remember the most. I really loved how distinct all the songs sound, which made the ranking very easy. It's not until the last few songs I ranked that my enjoyment starts to fall off, but even those it's more the case of being good/fine rather than "I hate this".

So yeah, I liked this quite a bit and it was a nice way to end Ranking Cycle #3. This is one I will definitely come back to again.
