Well, the Tory leadership contest is officially down to Sunak vs Truss in the final round. This means that Truss is most likely to win as shes fairly popular with regular Tory members while they really, really hate Sunak, and shes polling nearly 20 points clear of him. lol For those who are unfamiliar with Liz Truss: https://mobile.twitter.com/AdamBienkov/status/1549396990051639296?cxt=HHwWgICzgc-WyIArAAAA The good news is while both of them would likely lose an election badly to Labour, Truss might actually get them their worst ever result. --- I just decided to change this sig. I'm extremely pessimistic tbh.A coalition Labour government is best-case (realistic) scenario, for me. Electoral reform should be a guarantee if they're with the Lib Dems, independence referendum if they need the SNP. If those aren't the on the cards I'd at least hope they need to pick up a few backers from Plaid or even the Green (most likely singular but there's always hope) if they're only a few seats short. red_sox_777 posted... He got Brexit done and won an election decisively. That makes him the most effective Tory leader since Margaret Thatcher. Except brexit is still not done because its still being negotiated and they havent even implemented import checks. He was widely seen as a huge liability in that election and it was won despite him, not because of him. Then there was his actual tenure where he went back on almost all his manifesto commitments, got 200k people killed by covid, trashed the economy and had a government paralysed by scandal after scandal. He was without a doubt one of the least effective and competent PMs in living memory. I know that its red sox but stanning Johnson seems like a bridge too far. In a few months will you be saying I dunno guys, that Bolsonaro fellow got stuff done? Anyway, Labour can definitely win without Scotland. Tactical voting could devastate the Tories in England and they have pissed off everyone. Former industrial towns in the north and midlands hate them, wealthy commuter areas in the south hate them, even the farmers hate them. It seems like theyve fluffed it. Of course, when it seems that way they knife their leader and claim its a fresh start so hopefully people wont fall for that again. Cameron was in power when Brexit was voted on and caused the referendum. May was in power when Article 50 was invoked. Johnson came in after years of negotiations and forced it over the line, and he did this by accepting bad or incomplete deals by taking advantage of a nation that was sick of the whole thing. Yes it must be emphasised, the vote was (stupidly) arranged by Cameron, then it was May who began the process of leaving, set the timetable to leave completed the exit negotiations. Johnson just came in, went with an even less popular version of Mays backstop, held an election at the right time to get if over the line and is leaving large parts of the deal to be implemented by whoevers next while taking all the credit. I lived in London while he was mayor. When they brought in the rentable bicycles, they were called Boris bikes. Except, they were actually a Ken Livingstone (the mayor before him) policy that Boris took the credit for, this is just what he does. None of the work, all of the credit, thats the Boris Johnson way.
