My hot take was this was going to be good and I was right!

Like it wasnt fantastic, but thoroughly enjoyable

Highlight of the movie was easily the terrible rap.

I would never have bet in a million years the biggest minor character would be ugly Sonic

this is definitely worth a watch if you've watched a lot of cartoons growing up. it's basically just reference-based humor which can be pretty annoying, but it has some decent gags. reminds me a lot of a direct-to-video budget disney movie from back in the day

really enjoyed the scene that had hand drawn chip and monty, cg dale, claymation cop, real-life cop and sock puppet cop in the same shot.

I'm actually really glad that Sega is willing to let Ugly Sonic be a thing like this. They could very easily be bitter about it and embarrassed but after the success of both movies I guess they're happy to let it be a joke since they made the right choice to change it.

Ahahaha I loved this movie.

It was actually genuinely funny at times.

I just finished watching it. It was visually great looking, and it was overall just a fun time with a lot of good humor.

Gimme a sequal.

And give me Darkwing Duck!

I read that Sonic/SEGA/Paramount are not mentioned in the credits as a licensed appearance while other cameos from characters Disney doesnt own are

If thats the case, this could mean the legally-distinct parody character Ugly Sonic is owned by Disney, in a sort of Dumb Starbucks situation

It's weird, what part of Disney's history would make them think that they can just commit open and obvious borderline IP infringement and get away with it? it seems really out of character

That was great. It was a lot of fun. It feels like a worthy spiritual successor to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. And I never watched an episode of Rescue Rangers!

So many great cameos and jokes.

Ugly Sonic was never officially released in anything made or endorsed by Sega so that might be a loophole

Oh shit I didn't realize they didn't seem to give consent. Ignore what I said then! I don't know what kind of legal loophole makes Ugly Sonic legally distinct from Sonic, especially when they published a trailer with it. I'd be really interested to see how that played out.

The director implied "Ugly Sonic" was licensed in some way, but refused to say how, other than saying "I've gotta thank the lawyers for getting me the licenses we got however they had to get them." My guess is they basically unofficially got the okay from Sega/Paramount/etc., with the latter saying they didn't want to be credited so that they wouldn't be officially endorsing it.

Its one of my favourite [cameos in the film], he said. I can speak to that. Its one of my favourite things in the movie. And Im very excited for people to see it I dont know what I should, what Im allowed to say [about it]. I think I will actually plead the fifth.
Rescue Rangers features other animated cameos ranging from classic Disney characters to more obscure creations. Speaking broadly about the process of securing them, Schaffer said he wanted to thank the lawyers.
It was super-important to me to get a bunch of third-party cartoons, because if this is going to be some sort of a celebration of animation, it cant just be a celebration of Disney animation, he explained.
The [characters] you see in the movie sometimes we had to try two or three other things before we found one that could be licensed.
It was a process. [] You dont usually come out of a movie and want to thank the lawyers, but we genuinely owe the Disney lawyers for being team players.
[They] super stayed optimistic about it, and really saw the value of the third-party stuff, and they had to really work hard. [] Its easy for me to go, like, Oh, it would be cool if My Little Pony was in the movie, and theyre like, running in the hallways []
But then [the lawyers] have to go call Mattel and pitch them the movie, and tell them its not making fun of [the characters], and then I have to get on, and then blah, blah, blah. So it was a process. But you know, it makes [the movie] so much better.

That was a fun little movie!

That's a lot more than I thought he would say. So it does seem like they got permission in some way unless someone screwed up somewhere.

Randy Marsh is in a Disney film.

That is truly something special.

I hated everything about that movie but also didn't hate it.

Just finished watching this. Way better than I was expecting, and Ugly Sonic was a hit for me, but I'm also a *huge* sucker for anything Tim Robinson does. I hope they make sequels, and also a Darkwing movie. I had fun from start to finish.

This movie sucks but it's still enjoyable in its own way. It's exactly the same kind of movie as Space Jam 2 which just rubs me the wrong way. The thing that salvages it is that the writing is significantly better, there's some pretty good gags and jokes and in general it feels like more people gave a shit about trying to make a good movie. It shows! But at the same time it's weirdly low budget and slapped together, it feels like more money went towards paying for third-party IPs than the actual animation.

Speaking of which I do gotta say I got a real kick out of the legally distinct Bullet Bill. They definitely got shut the fuck down by Nintendo and went around them lol
