August 29, 2022: It will no longer be possible to use an eShop card to add funds. However, it will still be possible to redeem download codes.
Late March 2023: It will no longer be possible to make purchases, download demos or themes, redeem a download code, or add funds.

Reminder topic! The first step of the 3DS+Wii U eshop shutdown comes into effect two weeks from today, though you can still use eShop cards until August. Be sure to get the download-only games and DLC you desire while you can!

Don't own a Wii U. (Did I miss anything? I played BOTW on Switch, made it halfway through Captain Toad in three hours at a con, and played NSMBU at a different con.)

...but for the 3DS, thanks for the reminder. Will need to looksee what I might have to do. Particularly with my Pokemon... how does PokeBank work with this? A lot of my Pokemons are still on my 3DS. (I'll look into it but I'm already doing four things at once lol)

I'd heard if you link your Switch and 3DS accounts you can use your credit card to add funds to your Switch account and buy 3DS games with it. Is that not accurate?

Not really. Most of the big games have been ported to other systems.

There are a lot of nice ans cheap Gba games that are great to play on your gamepad tough.

the last pokemon game i played was Sun, and i'm pretty sure I have a few promo pokemon on it (whoever was sharing codes on here, i think it was pun, thank you). if i ever come back to the series i'd probably enjoy keeping them

I believe this is true for both Wii U and 3DS but don't quote me on that.

They have already announced that Pokemon Bank will become a free-to-use service, however you still need to download it by March 2023.

As it right now, it's still the same as normal. You still need to purchase a subscription in order to use the service. So you would need to do this before May 23 (subscriptions last for 365 days).

In March 2023 Bank is becoming free to use. So you could theoretically wait until then and not have to pay for anything. But if you want to use it this year, you'll have to get your subscription before you lose the ability to do so (there will be a few month period when people can't subscribe if they didn't pre-load funds, so you have to make your decision before then).

When does online play die?

Capcom currently has a sale on the 3DS for another few days. Monster Hunter games on DEEP discount. Atlus/SEGA will probably put their stuff back on sale before May ends. Square also technically has some games on sale, but the full prices haven't dropped, so the sales don't come off that impressive.

I have most of the 3DS games I want already purchased, but I fear like in the future I might want to play some stuff I currently don't
Like, I bought MH3 and MH4 but have yet to play them. Should I buy stories? I don't even know if I will like MH in general!
What about the DLC of the Fire Emblem games? Ugh

Users who link their Nintendo Network ID wallet (used with Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems) with their Nintendo Account wallet (used with the Nintendo Switch family of systems) can use the shared balance to purchase content on any of these systems until late March 2023.

...so I guess so? That makes things better for now, thanks for bringing this up!

How long will those systems still support online play?
For the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC, receive software updates and enjoy online play on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

No info on this, so we must be alright for some time.

If someone visits Nintendo eShop and wants to download something on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family systems after late March 2023, what will they able to do?
On both platforms, users will still be able to:
Redownload content they own
Download existing software updates

It seems I may have jumped the gun making this topic, for those who own Switches at least >_> Still, better to be safe than sorry!

That $0.26 or whatever is left on my balance from an old Christmas gift is more annoying to me than I'd like to admit, but there's nothing left I can think of that I want to buy.

Thought I was going to buy that srpg that came out a few weeks ago but it's apparently only like 30 minutes long.

Guess I'll have to pay since I think my subscription only goes one more month. Nice to know it's becoming free, but I presume part of that is because, y'know, it'll be a lot harder to import the Swampert you've had since 2003.

The thing to get on Wii U is SMB3 for the GBA VC because it has all the eReader card levels loaded

The Switch Online version probably will too when that inevitably gets announced next month, but do you want to take that chance?!

I wonder if it will still be available to buy after the E-shop shutdown, since it's accessed via an ingame store, rather than Nintendo's own E-shop? Of course, I'm not going to take that risk.

Is this like the Vita where you can still add funds via a compatible device and then use them on your 3DS/Vita?

When the Wii shop shut down, all DLC, including stuff in 3rd party stores like Rock Band, became unavailable too. I expect the same thing to happen this time.

Due to the 3DS being readily hackable now, those who didn't download Pokemon Bank in time could probably still install it outside of the normal process of downloading it off the eShop. It would be possible to download the app off the internet, then moving it to an SD Card and installing it with homebrew software.
