Hello everyone and welcome to a very special nomination post (or several). I struggled to think of which tracks I wanted to nominate for this year, and as day 2 was approaching, I made an important discoveryI have participated in 10 previous VGMC nomination rounds.

It was at that moment that I decided to forgo nominating on day 2, and instead focus on this post instead, which will feature my allotment of 10 for day 2 and 3 with representatives from all my past nominations. I checked the old spreadsheets, considered what is most representative of what people know me for, and have come up with the following countdown:

I had a couple options for year 15. My poor Deedlit nom that everyone loved in the preview never gained any traction during the actual contest. I was somehow the first person to nominate Terminal March this year, which narrowly missed the bracket. After playing Cold Steel, I nominated Land of Blue Skies. And I did make a feeble attempt to get a Genshin song into the contest. But as for what is most iconic from this year, I had to go with the soundtrack that I had personally uploaded to Youtube.

I love Lennas Inception. Is it an all-time great game? Maybe not. But it does a lot of things really well, and the boss themes are especially interesting. I had a choice between this and The Usurper, and decided to go with the more exotic sounding track that is taking place while you literally fight a refrigerator during a playthrough of a game on a glitched cartridge before the entire game world can become corrupted. Its probably not the kind of song most people expect from me, but the game is absolutely on-brand and I invite you all to go check it out.

VGMC14: Child of Light Off to Sleep

This was a weird year to pick for, because basically nothing else was on-brand. I would have sooner taken Pilgrims on a Long Journey to represent year 10, especially since Im not sure that I was the one to first nominate this track, but my other options wereHive Jump, Braid, Beat Saber, and Final Fantasy XIII-2. I dont dislike these songs, and would support them, but they arent games that reflect me.

Child of Light is. When I first played CoL however many years ago, I fell in love with the storybook atmosphere, the gameplay, and especially the soundtrack. Originally written by Couer de Pirate and then arranged for the game by someone else I cant recall the name of, theres a magical feel to so much of this OST. I like the title, most people like Auroras Theme, and weve seen a couple of the battle themes get in, but arguably the most iconic track from the game is the end credits, which is the lone vocal piece. And the weirdest part of this song was hearing it outside of a VGM setting my sisters daughters were in a color guard competition that I attended and one of the other schools was using Off to Sleep as their musical accompaniment. I was probably the only person in the audience who knew where it was from.

My other memory of Off to Sleep was in an old BOST when I nominated Child of Light and kept trying to make everyone happy, and eventually on the fourth or fifth revision, cut Off to Sleep, which made more people upset and made me finally give up on trying to come up with a set that would appease everyone. People remember this song more for the two seconds opening in the video than for the actual song, but the other decent upload cuts off the ending, so here we are.

Year 13 saw nominations like Prinny 2s Burning Sunrise and Gravity Ghosts Welcome to the Afterlife (which Im still really sad nobody picked up,) as well as the first of two tries on Europa Universalis IVs Ride Forth Victoriously, but although I may have been eclipsed in attachment to the game by NFUN, I was the OG nominator for Granado Espada retirees Rapal and Laguerra del Mundo. (Ni Miedo and M.I.S.A. made the bracket way back before that, and M.I.S.A. was the reason I had ever actually looked up this soundtrack in the first place.)

Between GE and DFO, theres been a running joke that Im the Korean MMO guy, which of course isnt even remotely accurate, but we pretend. The surprise to me is that I only ever actually nominated this once, according to hastes spreadsheet. Between that and a dearth of other options, I knew Honor Winds had to be the nominee representing year 13.

I have no idea what light version means in the video link. Theres only one Rivellon unless you go digging through the sound files.

A bunch of years back, I played D:OS 1, and although I liked some of the things the game was doing, and I especially loved the atmosphere of Kirill Pokrovskys soundtrack, there were just too many things about the game that annoyed me. A couple years later, Larian released a sequel. Sadly, theyd been forced to move on after Pokrovskys death, but Borislav Slavov did such an amazing job following in his footsteps that there wasnt a letdown in the games music.

And TBH, it felt more shareable. There were at least three tracks from DOS2 that I enjoyed enough to openly try to push, and several others I used in guessing games, to the point that this became the most immediate thing people guessed when they realized it was from me. The games title theme, and the bard song reward, Sing For Me, would have both been inclusions Id have been happy with, but the song I pushed for the contest and got in to the tune of a R1 stomp was Rivellon, a sweet town theme featuring acoustic guitar and flutewhich I brought back at the tail end of my survival list run-up to year 15 which features one-off songsandnobody really remembered, unlike nearly every other song on that list. So here it is, one more time.

Another unexpected pick, since I think most people know Cloudbuilt best for the oft-nominated credits theme, Cloudscapes and Speed. However, I developed a strange love for this speed-running parkour game that I played barely a full hour of, since Jacob Linckes music was so captivating. And even if Cloudscapes was my top favorite, somebody else beat me to retiring a track with Monolith. In year 11, I decided to try Sinister Gale instead. It didnt get in.

My other year 11 options were a little lean. I pushed Death by Glamour in the year after the Undertale fiasco as the one big song I felt hadnt gotten in. I was also amused enough with She Wants Me Dead to try to get yall to listen to some bari sax, but most of my other nominations that year were not especially unique. Butterflys Invitation, Bodhisattva Kill, Nefertiti, Fear Not This Night, MARIAyeah, my only real option here was Sinister Gale, and I think its a perfectly fine rep.

Contest 10 was a weird year. I mean, they let me take over, so what did you expect? But thanks to the vaunted two-phase system, there was a short list to pick from here. A Shadow to Prevail (Crypt of the Necrodancer), Entrance (Deemo), and Silence of the Sunlight Filtering Through the Trees (Ao Evo) were all floated, as well as one of my many attempts to try to squeeze Lineage 2 into the contest. But even if it isnt the first thing people remember me for, Im the only person with any connection whatsoever to Sol Survivor, a random tower defense indie title that, TBH, isnt very good. Production quality is okay, but the games not very interesting.

The music is, though, if very subdued most of the time. In VGMC7, I nominated Oil & Sweat, which retired, and is often cited by people as one of the most unexpected or boring retirees in our history. Its an 8 minute slow build of a piece thats in three parts because the game uses the sections dynamically. In VGMC 9, I went with Home is Nowhere (parts 2 and 3), which is bizarre because it has the same three parts, but one of them is broken off on the soundtrack. It got in, but lost. So, being the determined individual, I decided to give it one more go this year with The Depths part 3, which was a song where all three parts were separated on the soundtrack, because yay for consistency.

It didnt make the bracket. I doubt it will here, either, but maybe someone will like it.

Which Ive later come to also know, maybe, as Morgan Battle? Except the nominations sheet suggests I nominated Morgan Battle in an earlier year than this, which doesnt make any sense, so I have no idea whats going on there.

Home is Nowhere would have been a reasonable song to use this year, except I had a TON of other good options. Saika (Deemo), two Lineage 2 tracks, two Crusader Kings 2 tracks, Pens and Swords (Hammerwatch) and I even was the first to nominate one of the songs from Touhou 8.

But if we want to talk about my on-brand, for many people on the board, that starts and ends with Dungeon Fighter Online -- or Dungeon & Fighter if youre Korean. The one thing all the songs Im listing here today have in common is that they all originate from games I played before I heard the music. (Except Granado Espada.) DFO was a free online beatemup RPG that I played with my old roommates after we saw countless ads for it and decided to finally just give it a shot. The three of us had some great fun with the game, and after it was over and I had joined the board, I remembered, yknow, that had some great music. Over the years there have been 9 DFO nominations and Im probably responsible for all but two, mostly because GBL Goddess Temple got screwed by leftys placement one year, and so I was determined to give it another try, which also met an unfortunate demise. It hasnt been seen in five years.

The PVP arena theme, however, struck me as having more potential, so Im giving you all one more chance to hear it.

Alas, poor Eranas Peace. And Eranas Garden. And the other Eranas Peace. And also the ending, which contains Eranas Peace.

I had originally tabbed Dynasty Warriors Eve to be the pick here, since DW was very indicative of early-to-the-board me and it feels weird to omit. But it felt even weirder to omit QFG. I still have my original box for Heros Quest I from freaking 1989, before Sierra was issued a cease-and-desist and had to change the name. QFG 1 and 2 have a very special place in my heart, even though I was terrible at basically every other Sierra game that ever existed. Ive done speed runs of this game, which consist not in rushing the game in real world time, but rather in game time.

And because I own the original, aint nobody got time for the stupid VGA remaster. The sound quality on that is better, I suppose, but it doesnt hold the same magic for me. Thanks but no thanks. I went out of my way to upload the ending music myself. In hindsight, I wish I had taken a screenshot from like 2 seconds later so it had the rest of the text on the right side. RIP.

Some day Ill play the fifth game. It came out so much later than the others, and I simply never had the chance until recently when they were all available on GoG. But the best music is still in the first game. Or the fourth. Necrotaur Battle, anyone?

VGMC7: Tyrian Gryphons of the West

Before there was the board. Before there were places to listen to VGM online. Before I was aware of people in Japan having soundtrack CDs or Nintendo Power mailing me a few of the N64 games as part of some promotionthere was the sound test in Tyrian.

I have always loved video game music. I loved the music on the Commodore 64 that I was playing probably as early as 83 or 84. I loved the songs on my friends NES, SNES, and Genesis games. I loved the tracks from my Gameboy hold that thought but when our DOS computer finally had a sound blaster?? All those early shareware titles that could leverage it really held my attention. The first wave was games like Jill of the Jungle, which werent really very good, but we were all new to VGA graphics and not-PC-speaker sound, so we didnt know any better. Tyrian was part of the second wave. Games that were genuinely made for that technology. And Alex Brandons music was fantastic.

If, rather than firing up Tyrian and dont you dare tack 2000 onto the end of it you ran the set-up config instead, it would play the music in the background and give you access to a sound test. It was mesmerizing. It would be almost a decade later before Id get to college, take calc 3, and realize that they were creating these glittery starfield patterns using cylindrical coordinates. In the meanwhile, Id stare at the lights and colors, dancing around the screen, as all 31 of the games songs were at my disposal. And then an expanded version of Tyrian came out with a fourth episode, and it added a new mission to episode 1 and a bunch of extra songs. I genuinely sat in our spare room, playing the sound test for hours at a time, and making ranking lists of which songs I liked best. Yes, in 1996. Is it any surprise I ended up here?

Camanis might have been a better nomination pick, but upon attaching myself to the community like an unwelcome barnacle, Gryphons was my first Tyrian nominee. I was sure nobody could have possibly known the game and I was gonna show how cool I was by introducing them to this new game with all this awesome music andit lost in round 1. I also only learned today that there was a nomination from the game in year 4. Welp. Guess I feel stupid now, huh.

This is my song.

If I died today, you would play it at my funeral. As someone who can never pick favorites for anything, I will regularly claim this is my favorite piece of VGM. It was my guest upload for VGMotD, and unlike other similar decisions, I didnt look back and what about my selection. Everything about this track is perfect, right down to the extension of the bass on the last note. Its the ending song to the first game I owned on the first (non-computer) system I owned, and it encapsulates everything I love about old game music. If you had thought this last selection was going to be anything other than Legend Forever, you dont know me.

The real shock is that I havent nominated it since.

And, of course, its also in the same series as the game I will usually tell people is my favorite, too, even if I only had a vague sense of their relationship as a 13-year-old when I first played it. That has nothing to do with why I love Legend Forever, though. It uses the Gameboy sound in a way that I just didnt hear anywhere else, and between this and FFL2, I could just listen to the game music when I was on those long bus trips at night and it was too dark to see any more.

But boy did I have to hunt to find a proper upload, across four different titles for the game (Final Fantasy Adventure, Sword of Mana, Seiken Densetsu, Mystic Quest) before I finally located something with the actual Gameboy sound and no unwanted lead-in. Im not sure how that would work, but if it dies today, you can play me at its funeral, too.
