I dont watch any motorsports but those two seem like the most boring. I mean I can see the appeal of the other types of racing. Hell, I could probably see myself actually watching a rally or a 24 hour race.

I agree that Id be much more interested in races with twisting tracks, but to be honest I wouldnt watch that either. It would be fun to DObut not watch.

If everyone who is complaining about racing in this topic posted their absolute favorite sport, video game, film, show, book, or band/song, I guarantee there will be multiple people here on PotD alone who find that thing utterly boring and pointless.

And I will probably be one of those people.

And I say that as someone who doesn't even like racing at all, so it's not like I'm trying to stand up for racing or defend something I'm into. I say it as someone who doesn't find racing any more or less boring than most other sports. Or eSports. Or online multiplayer games in general. Or the average person's lame hobbies.

Same. I like playing a racing video game from time to time, but as far as watching actual racing goes? No thanks.

Maybe the occasional rally race if it's on somewhere I happen to be, but I wouldn't go out of my way or make any real effort to watch a race

Drag racing is an engineering wank
NASCAR is regulated in to redundancy, so now it's just redneck party.

As a fan of nascar, there is definitely boring races where it seems like it's nothing but circles (especially in the late 00s and 10s) but once you get into it there's a lot more nuance and excitement than you would expect. There's the challenge of the car, the challenge of the track, the challenge of racing the other drivers and pit strategy that all goes into it. Like most sports im sure would find the highlight videos exciting/entertaining at least.

It's exciting because you might see someone die in a glorious fiery crash

I think NASCAR is more for testing auto parts. Think about it. Why would an automaker spend millions of dollars on new technology testing when they can have some stock cars test out those new features in a safe environment with a qualified driver. It's a perfect environment to test new parts... and people PAY for it!

The nascar Racing experience is not the same as a race, also that is one of the least intense tracks on the schedule. Now im not saying nascar has the hardest tracks or anything but that's hardly an accurate depiction of how intense a lap during a race can get.

You said track, doesn't matter the situation or the people involved. A track is a track.

I was never a fan of watching races but I do like racing games (minus the NASCAR ones). I think there are a lot of people who don't like watching car races but they like cars. So that is why they enjoy racing games. Or driving in games.

It's generally around 3-3.5 hours depending on factors like caution and miles ran. Also they generally run around 180 outside short tracks and road courses. Another thing I would like to point out is that pit road speed is like 70 mph so they are going highway speeds and stopping and cutting across each other as they enter/leave pit boxes.

I'm not a sports person so I don't watch them either. However, many people like sports which is fine with me.

This is how I think about things, so I try not to judge what people enjoy. Even Reality TV watchers :/

Plus, every hobby gets nuanced when you delve deeper into it.

There's a difference between "I think what you like is dumb" and "I really can't understand why someone finds that enjoyable - can you explain?". The latter is a legit question.

As for NASCAR, I get it to a degree: if you watch on TV you can pick up on some pit strategy or whatever. As for watching it in person, I don't know how you could pick up on any of that and I have to assume it's just an excuse to hang out/party in an environment with fast machines and potential crashes.

If someone likes the latter, more power to them...I just won't be joining.

supposedly the fact that the cars are samey and the racing is not very complicated results in very tight margins. everyone is extremely even, and so tend to be at about the same pace. this can be quite intense when there are 7+ cars within a few tenths or hundredths of a second of each other, all going flat out.

(I want to say "every mistake matters and moves you or your opponent noticeably up or down" but... is that true? if that was true then it wouldn't be so close in the first place. maybe it's true, but the number of possible mistakes to make has been completely minimized, which is why it's neck and neck to begin with.)

I like the crashes where no one gets hurt. I dont like people getting hurt. The crashes are neat though. I still remember Juan Pablo Montoya run into one of the jet dryers in Cup Series. It was dark so it looked even more impressive.

i mean, i appreciate the skill it takes the drivers and pit crews, like they're genuinely great at what they do

but like

not a fan of racing but i guess i understand watching it on tv or somewhere where you can see the whole race but i dont understand the appeal of just watching it on the side and you can only see the cars when they pass by you real fast.
