It seems like a lot of the initial hype of the trailer (and various little Easter Eggs) wore off kinda quick and now it's just out here, but I feel like as a Sonic fan and fan of the first movie, I'm still looking forward to it. Seems to be reviewing in line with the original, too.

Also apparently Jim Carrey chews up the scenery even more in this one so I'm not sure if that's an improvement or not.

Oh I was in day 1 as soon as I saw Knux was in it, and that was confirmed once they got Idris Elba

But it looks like it's not even going to be released in Qatar until after Ramadan. So I'm going to have to wait a month. Absolutely furious.

I'd like to see it but feel like theaters are a pretty big no brainer to avoid getting sick.

Saw it yesterday, it was a fun time

Just saw it. Tons of fun! I have my issues with the movie, but overall it exceeded expectations! It's just a movie that made me really happy to see, just like the first one, considering Sonic was always my favorite video game character. They did good.

I also had no idea that so many kids would be into the end credits scene, but they went wild for it.

I'll see it when I get the chance, but not in a theatre. So probably not soon?

This movie was great.

First off, though, all the human stuff sucked and at this point felt like it only existed to pad screentime (this was over 2 hours to the previous 1 hour 40 minutes from the original). I absolutely 100% did not need resolution to a stupid fake engagement/wedding involving characters I couldn't give a shit about. And I don't care about the Wachowskis at all. They have no personality whatsoever.

I also loved the little references:

The three warriors at the beginning having helmets of the Babylon Rogues.
Sonic falling down the water falls like Hydrocity-type levels.
The underwater bubble and Sonic's general inability to swim.
Knuckles having a terrible father, just like the comics!
The instruction manual for the Death Egg Robot looking like a Genesis game cover.

And I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting.

And of course seeing Shadow in the mid-credits scene got me hyped as fuck.

I was just kinda disappointed in the ending, though. I thought when they introduced Tails and had him flying in the bi-plane, they were really going to introduce Sonic's more adventurous side from the games. That Tom finally accept that Sonic was mature enough to be the hero he wanted to be, and that Tails and Sonic would go on adventures on the plane. It just felt super weird having Sonic call him dad and having the three be their awkward alien children.

Oh and I appreciate Jim Carrey going full 90's as hard as he can.

Saw it last Sunday. Enjoyed it! But agree, the movie would have been greatly improved if you just gouged out most of the human parts, especially the entire wedding plot and the GUN plot to capture Sonic (which made no goddamn sense for a multitude of reasons).

I do kinda wish they'd fleshed out the finale a little bit more. I guess they could explain it in the sequel/Knuckles spin off, but just a line or two explaining why the Chaos Emeralds suddenly flew into Sonic would have been appreciated. Though I did like how Knuckles is strong enough to punch the super out of people, just like in the games.

Also, I really wished they'd introduced Metal Sonic this film. With Shadow coming next time, introducing two 'Sonic-like' badguys in the same film seems unlikely (especially if Carrey doesn't want to do it anymore). Even if Robotnik had just summoned in Metal versions of all three just for something to fight for 5 minutes would have been enough.

Oh, completely forgot about Super Sonic being evil from the Sonic UK comic. I mean it was ultimately a swerve but I think it was an intentional reference.

Another thought I had was how much of a delight Knuckles was and how much of a blast that it seemed like Idris Elba had. I was worried that he would kind of phone it in, but Idris seemed like he went 110% into the Knuckles character, even delivering nonsense Echidna lore. I really appreciated that.

I wish Tails was in it a little bit more, and yeah, the human stuff could have been toned down a ton (but I sort of get why it was there). I didn't mind it all that much as it was pretty entertaining. There were a few boring parts of it though.

I agree with the assessments itt. It was a fun movie with great easter eggs, and the entire theater crowd went nuts during the credits scene. Elba and Carrey went nuts and I really enjoyed their performances.

Sounds like it could open at about $67-70 million this weekend, which would be higher than the $58 million of the first movie's opening weekend. Which is pretty good because most predictions had it in the range of doing slightly below or similar to previous one.

I'm really hoping this gets decent enough success that it continues, although I'm not sure if it can continue without Jim Carrey.

I'm almost positive Jim Carrey is going to be in the next one. He screws around with the media constantly, you can tell he's having an awesome time with the role, and he knew this movie would do gangbusters and if he just played hardball and acted like he wouldn't be in another, they'll probably throw even more money at him to be in the third film.

Not me. I'm waiting for the Sonic 3 and Knuckles movie.

The subtle humor (any joke that is kind of a throwaway line and not the in your face "SNOW MY GOD" kids puns made this decent to get through. Elba and Carrey made each scene they were in amazing, specifically towards the end. Though Agent Stone continues to be a nice lackey. Sonic is appropriately annoying, so I started wishing Knuckles would fucking destroy him to shut him the fuck up. So...yeah, they have Sonic down.

Tails and the human characters are just..."there." But the human characters gotta go. I would hope they get away from the human characters completely for the third (save for Robotnik and Stone).

Another Easter Egg I missed: the water shooting out of the manholes is a reference to the Perfect Chaos FMV cinematic in Sonic Adventure.

Saw it. Was good! Better than the first movie for sure. The last two major scenes were very video gamey in a way that really worked. Idris Elba and Jim Carrey killed it.

Only real complaints are the same weaknesses as the first movie. A lot of the dialogue and writing is below average (wtf was that snow lodge scene?) and while I don't really mind the human characters that much I think they're a symptom of the writing more than a cause.

And a minor nitpick but I wish they'd get more of the game music in there besides for jokes. If they're doing orchestral remixes I can't tell, though I think I caught the drowning music when Sonic saved Knuckles? Not really sure on that.

Theater had a bunch of adult nerds (ourselves included) that the mid credits scene got a good reaction of laughing and cheering from so that was wonderful

why didn't Sonic use his "Bullet Time" thing from the first movie and just steal the map and grab Tails at the Tavern thing when they were in the Snow Mountains?

There's gotta be like 3-5 times Sonic could have ended the movie by going fast while Eggman is futzing around but that would mean interrupting Jim Carrey's performance which is illegal.

Ended up doing $72 million so yeah, pretty damn good opening weekend.

Also a good sign that integrating more Sonic "lore" is possible. The first movie was basically a 90's road trip movie featuring Sonic.

Instead, I'm playing Sonic Adventure DX, and I doubt there's any way the movie could be funnier.

I mean...yes. The question being how far they'd go with it. Generations even had a move where she flashes her boobs to distract enemies. You just know Wade would be into that.

Watched Sonic 2 just now in a near-empty theater, and had a good time. I quite enjoyed all the references I caught to the games, and this topic has pointed out several that I didn't catch! Human characters besides Robotnik were decidedly meh, though.

Yeah we could have cut the entire breakout section and things would have hummed nicely.

The fiancee didn't need to be an agent either, the agents could have just been stalking their family to Hawaii. Also it didn't make sense for them to infiltrate the life of the sister who lives in San Francisco. What do they gain from that other than a 1 time gathering (the wedding) with Donut Lord and Pretzel Lady that they wouldn't have taken Sonic to anyways.

But after the wedding is disrupted they could have just skipped straight to the army believing them about Robotnik.

But even with all that said it was enjoyable and Knuckles had a serious "Thor from the first Avengers movie" vibe which was fantastic.

I'm not gonna lie I teared up pretty badly during the climax of that movie it was like 30 years worth of nostalgia manifesting on a movie screen and I couldn't keep it in anymore
